Învierea şi arătările lui Hristos
15 Vă fac cunoscută, fraţilor, Evanghelia, pe care(A) v-am propovăduit-o, pe care aţi primit-o(B), în care aţi rămas 2 şi prin(C) care sunteţi mântuiţi, dacă o ţineţi aşa după cum v-am propovăduit-o, altfel, degeaba aţi(D) crezut. 3 V-am(E) învăţat înainte de toate, aşa cum(F) am primit şi eu, că Hristos a murit pentru păcatele noastre, după(G) Scripturi, 4 că a fost îngropat şi a înviat a treia zi, după Scripturi(H), 5 şi(I) că S-a arătat lui Chifa, apoi celor(J) doisprezece. 6 După aceea S-a arătat la peste cinci sute de fraţi deodată, dintre care cei mai mulţi sunt încă în viaţă, iar unii au adormit. 7 În urmă, S-a arătat lui Iacov, apoi tuturor(K) apostolilor. 8 După ei(L) toţi, ca unei stârpituri, mi S-a arătat şi mie. 9 Căci eu sunt cel mai(M) neînsemnat dintre apostoli; nu sunt vrednic să port numele de apostol, fiindcă am(N) prigonit Biserica lui Dumnezeu. 10 Prin(O) harul lui Dumnezeu sunt ce sunt. Şi harul Lui faţă de mine n-a fost zadarnic, ba încă am(P) lucrat mai mult decât toţi, totuşi(Q) nu eu, ci harul lui Dumnezeu, care este în mine. 11 Astfel dar, ori eu, ori ei, noi aşa propovăduim şi voi aşa aţi crezut.
Însemnătatea învierii lui Hristos
12 Iar dacă se propovăduieşte că Hristos a înviat din morţi, cum zic unii dintre voi că nu este o înviere a morţilor? 13 Dacă nu este o înviere a morţilor, nici(R) Hristos n-a înviat. 14 Şi dacă n-a înviat Hristos, atunci propovăduirea noastră este zadarnică şi zadarnică este şi credinţa voastră. 15 Ba încă noi suntem descoperiţi şi ca martori mincinoşi ai lui Dumnezeu, fiindcă am mărturisit(S) despre Dumnezeu că El a înviat pe Hristos, când nu L-a înviat, dacă este adevărat că morţii nu învie. 16 Căci, dacă nu învie morţii, nici Hristos n-a înviat. 17 Şi dacă n-a înviat Hristos, credinţa voastră este zadarnică, voi sunteţi încă(T) în păcatele voastre 18 şi, prin urmare, şi cei ce au adormit în Hristos sunt pierduţi. 19 Dacă(U) numai pentru viaţa aceasta ne-am pus nădejdea în Hristos, atunci suntem cei mai nenorociţi dintre toţi oamenii! 20 Dar acum, Hristos(V) a înviat din morţi, pârga(W) celor adormiţi. 21 Căci dacă(X) moartea a venit prin om, tot prin(Y) om a venit şi învierea morţilor. 22 Şi după cum toţi mor în Adam, tot aşa, toţi vor învia în Hristos, 23 dar fiecare(Z) la rândul cetei lui. Hristos este Cel dintâi rod, apoi, la venirea Lui, cei ce sunt ai lui Hristos. 24 În urmă, va veni sfârşitul, când El va da Împărăţia(AA) în mâinile lui Dumnezeu Tatăl, după ce va fi nimicit orice domnie, orice stăpânire şi orice putere. 25 Căci trebuie ca El să împărăţească până(AB) va pune pe toţi vrăjmaşii sub picioarele Sale. 26 Vrăjmaşul(AC) cel din urmă care va fi nimicit va fi moartea. 27 Dumnezeu, în adevăr, „a(AD) pus totul sub picioarele Lui”. Dar când zice că totul I-a fost supus, se înţelege că afară de Cel ce I-a supus totul. 28 Şi când(AE) toate lucrurile Îi vor fi supuse, atunci chiar(AF) şi Fiul Se va supune Celui ce I-a supus toate lucrurile, pentru ca Dumnezeu să fie totul în toţi. 29 Altfel, ce ar face cei ce se botează pentru cei morţi? Dacă nu învie morţii nicidecum, de ce se mai botează ei pentru cei morţi? 30 Şi de ce(AG) suntem noi în primejdie în orice clipă? 31 În fiecare zi, eu(AH) sunt în primejdie de moarte; atât este de adevărat lucrul acesta, fraţilor, cât este de adevărat că am de ce să mă laud(AI) cu voi în Hristos Isus, Domnul nostru. 32 Dacă, vorbind în felul oamenilor, m-am(AJ) luptat cu fiarele în Efes, care-mi este folosul? Dacă nu învie morţii, atunci „să(AK) mâncăm şi să bem, căci mâine vom muri”. 33 Nu vă înşelaţi: „Tovărăşiile(AL) rele strică obiceiurile bune”. 34 Veniţi-vă(AM) în fire cum se cuvine şi nu păcătuiţi! Căci(AN) sunt între voi unii care nu cunosc pe Dumnezeu, spre(AO) ruşinea voastră o spun.
Cum vor învia morţii
35 Dar va zice cineva: „Cum(AP) învie morţii? Şi cu ce trup se vor întoarce?” 36 Nebun ce eşti! Ce(AQ) semeni tu nu învie dacă nu moare mai întâi. 37 Şi când semeni, semeni nu trupul care va fi, ci doar un grăunte, cum se întâmplă: fie de grâu, fie de altă sămânţă. 38 Apoi, Dumnezeu îi dă un trup, după cum voieşte, şi fiecărei seminţe îi dă un trup al ei. 39 Nu orice trup este la fel, ci altul este trupul oamenilor, altul este trupul dobitoacelor, altul este trupul păsărilor, altul al peştilor. 40 Tot aşa sunt trupuri cereşti şi trupuri pământeşti, dar alta este strălucirea trupurilor cereşti şi alta a trupurilor pământeşti. 41 Alta este strălucirea soarelui, alta strălucirea lunii şi alta este strălucirea stelelor; chiar o stea se deosebeşte în strălucire de altă stea. 42 Aşa(AR) este şi învierea morţilor. Trupul este semănat în putrezire şi învie în neputrezire; 43 este(AS) semănat în ocară şi învie în slavă; este semănat în neputinţă şi învie în putere. 44 Este semănat trup firesc şi învie trup duhovnicesc. Dacă este un trup firesc, este şi un trup duhovnicesc. 45 De aceea este scris: „Omul dintâi Adam a fost(AT) făcut un suflet viu”. Al doilea Adam(AU) a fost făcut un duh(AV) dătător de viaţă. 46 Dar întâi vine nu ce este duhovnicesc, ci ce este firesc; ce este duhovnicesc vine pe urmă. 47 Omul(AW) dintâi este din pământ(AX), pământesc; omul al doilea este din(AY) cer. 48 Cum este cel pământesc, aşa sunt şi cei pământeşti; cum(AZ) este Cel ceresc, aşa sunt şi cei cereşti. 49 Şi după cum(BA) am purtat chipul celui pământesc, tot aşa vom(BB) purta şi chipul Celui ceresc. 50 Ce spun eu, fraţilor, este că nu pot carnea(BC) şi sângele să moştenească Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu, şi că putrezirea nu poate moşteni neputrezirea. 51 Iată, vă spun o taină: nu(BD) vom adormi toţi, dar(BE) toţi vom fi schimbaţi, 52 într-o clipă, într-o clipeală din ochi, la cea din urmă trâmbiţă. Trâmbiţa(BF) va suna, morţii vor învia nesupuşi putrezirii şi noi vom fi schimbaţi. 53 Căci trebuie ca trupul acesta supus putrezirii să se îmbrace în neputrezire şi trupul(BG) acesta muritor să se îmbrace în nemurire. 54 Când trupul acesta supus putrezirii se va îmbrăca în neputrezire şi trupul acesta muritor se va îmbrăca în nemurire, atunci se va împlini cuvântul care este scris: „Moartea(BH) a fost înghiţită de biruinţă. 55 Unde îţi este biruinţa, moarte(BI)? Unde îţi este boldul, moarte?” 56 Boldul morţii este păcatul şi puterea(BJ) păcatului este Legea. 57 Dar(BK) mulţumiri fie aduse lui Dumnezeu, care ne dă biruinţa(BL) prin Domnul nostru Isus Hristos! 58 De aceea(BM), preaiubiţii mei fraţi, fiţi tari, neclintiţi, sporiţi totdeauna în lucrul Domnului, căci ştiţi că(BN) osteneala voastră în Domnul nu este zadarnică.

The Risen Christ, Faith’s Reality(A)
15 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel (B)which I preached to you, which also you received and (C)in which you stand, 2 (D)by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless (E)you believed in vain.
3 For (F)I delivered to you first of all that (G)which I also received: that Christ died for our sins (H)according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day (I)according to the Scriptures, 5 (J)and that He was seen by [a]Cephas, then (K)by the twelve. 6 After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have [b]fallen asleep. 7 After that He was seen by James, then (L)by all the apostles. 8 (M)Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.

The Risen Christ, Our Hope(R)
12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, (S)then Christ is not risen. 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because (T)we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; (U)you are still in your sins! 18 Then also those who have [c]fallen (V)asleep in Christ have perished. 19 (W)If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.
The Last Enemy Destroyed
20 But now (X)Christ is risen from the dead, and has become (Y)the firstfruits of those who have [d]fallen asleep. 21 For (Z)since by man came death, (AA)by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall (AB)be made alive. 23 But (AC)each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers (AD)the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign (AE)till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 (AF)The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For (AG)“He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 (AH)Now when all things are made subject to Him, then (AI)the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.
Effects of Denying the Resurrection
29 Otherwise, what will they do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they baptized for the dead? 30 And (AJ)why do we stand in [e]jeopardy every hour? 31 I affirm, by (AK)the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, (AL)I die daily. 32 If, in the manner of men, (AM)I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, (AN)“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
33 Do not be deceived: (AO)“Evil company corrupts good habits.” 34 (AP)Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; (AQ)for some do not have the knowledge of God. (AR)I speak this to your shame.
A Glorious Body
35 But someone will say, (AS)“How are the dead raised up? And with what body do they come?” 36 Foolish one, (AT)what you sow is not made alive unless it dies. 37 And what you sow, you do not sow that body that shall be, but mere grain—perhaps wheat or some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body.
39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind [f]of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds.
40 There are also [g]celestial bodies and [h]terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory.
42 (AU)So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. 43 (AV)It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, (AW)“The first man Adam became a living being.” (AX)The last Adam became (AY)a life-giving spirit.
46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. 47 (AZ)The first man was of the earth, (BA)made[i] of dust; the second Man is [j]the Lord (BB)from heaven. 48 As was the [k]man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; (BC)and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. 49 And (BD)as we have borne the image of the man of dust, (BE)we[l] shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.
Our Final Victory
50 Now this I say, brethren, that (BF)flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a [m]mystery: (BG)We shall not all sleep, (BH)but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. (BI)For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and (BJ)this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: (BK)“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
56 The sting of death is sin, and (BM)the strength of sin is the law. 57 (BN)But thanks be to God, who gives us (BO)the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 (BP)Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing (BQ)that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

The Resurrection of Christ

The Resurrection of the Dead
12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, (T)how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, (U)then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that (V)he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and (W)you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who (X)have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope[b] in this life only, (Y)we are of all people most to be pitied.

The Resurrection Body
35 But someone will ask, (AX)“How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! (AY)What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.
42 (AZ)So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; (BA)it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. Mystery and Victory
50 I tell you this, brothers: (BK)flesh and blood (BL)cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. (BM)We shall not all sleep, (BN)but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For (BO)the trumpet will sound, and (BP)the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and (BQ)this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

55 (BS)“O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and (BT)the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, (BU)who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 (BV)Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in (BW)the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord (BX)your labor is not in vain.

The Resurrection of the Dead
12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead,(AA) how can some of you say that there is no resurrection(AB) of the dead?(AC) 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised,(AD) our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead.(AE) But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.(AF) 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep(AG) in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.(AH)

29 Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them? 30 And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour?(BA) 31 I face death every day(BB)—yes, just as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32 If I fought wild beasts(BC) in Ephesus(BD) with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised,

The Resurrection Body
35 But someone will ask,(BJ) “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”(BK) 36 How foolish!(BL) What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.(BM) 37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.(BN) 39 Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. 41 The sun has one kind of splendor,(BO) the moon another and the stars another;(BP) and star differs from star in splendor.
42 So will it be(BQ) with the resurrection of the dead.(BR) The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;(BS) 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory;(BT) it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.(BU)
If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”[f];(BV) the last Adam,(BW) a life-giving spirit.(BX) 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.(BY) 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth;(BZ) the second man is of heaven.(CA) 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.(CB) 49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man,(CC) so shall we[g] bear the image of the heavenly man.(CD)
50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood(CE) cannot inherit the kingdom of God,(CF) nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.(CG) 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery:(CH) We will not all sleep,(CI) but we will all be changed(CJ)— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound,(CK) the dead(CL) will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable(CM) must clothe itself with the imperishable,(CN) and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”[h](CO)

58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,(CU) because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.(CV)

Christ’s Resurrection
15 Now I want to make clear for you,[a] brothers and sisters,[b] the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I passed on to you as of first importance[c] what I also received—that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised[d] on the third day according to the scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,[e] then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than 500 of the brothers and sisters[f] at one time, most of whom are still alive,[g] though some have fallen asleep.[h] 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as though to one born at the wrong time,[i] he appeared to me also. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been in vain. In fact, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, this is the way we preach and this is the way you believed.
No Resurrection?
12 Now if Christ is being preached as raised from the dead,[j] how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is futile and your faith is empty. 15 Also, we are found to be false witnesses about God, because we have testified against God that he raised Christ from the dead, when in reality he did not raise him, if indeed the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is useless; you are still in your sins. 18 Furthermore, those who have fallen asleep[k] in Christ have also perished. 19 For if only in this life we have hope in Christ, we should be pitied more than anyone.
20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man,[l] the resurrection of the dead also came through a man.[m] 22 For just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ, the firstfruits; then when Christ comes, those who belong to him.[n] 24 Then[o] comes the end,[p] when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, when he has brought to an end all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be eliminated is death. 27 For he has put everything in subjection under his feet.[q] But when it says “everything” has been put in subjection, it is clear that this does not include the one who put everything in subjection to him. 28 And when all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.
29 Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead?[r] If the dead are not raised at all, then why are they baptized for them? 30 Why too are we in danger every hour? 31 Every day I am in danger of death! This is as sure as[s] my boasting in you,[t] which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32 If from a human point of view I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what did it benefit me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.[u] 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”[v] 34 Sober up as you should, and stop sinning! For some have no knowledge of God—I say this to your shame!
The Resurrection Body
35 But someone will say, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?” 36 Fool! The glory of the heavenly body is one sort and the earthly another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars, for star differs from star in glory.
42 It is the same with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable.[y] 43 It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So also it is written, “The first man, Adam, became a living person”;[z] the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 However, the spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man is from the earth, made of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 Like the one made of dust, so too are those made of dust, and like the one from heaven, so too those who are heavenly. 49 And just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, let us also bear[aa] the image of the man of heaven.

He simply uses it as evidence from the lives of the Corinthians themselves to bolster his larger argument, begun in 15:12, that resurrection from the dead is a present reality in Christ and a future reality for them. Whatever they may have proclaimed, the Corinthians’ actions demonstrated that they had hope for a bodily resurrection.

The future indicative is not widespread geographically. At the same time, it fits the context well: Not only are there indicatives in this section (especially vv. 42-49), but the conjunction καί (kai) introducing the comparative καθώς (kathōs) seems best to connect to the preceding by furthering the same argument (what is, not what ought to be). For this reason, though, the future indicative could be a reading thus motivated by an early scribe. In light of the extremely weighty evidence for the aorist subjunctive, it is probably best to regard the aorist subjunctive as autographic. This connects well with v. 50, for there Paul makes a pronouncement that seems to presuppose some sort of exhortation. G. D. Fee (First Corinthians [NICNT], 795) argues for the originality of the subjunctive, stating that “it is nearly impossible to account for anyone’s having changed a clearly understandable future to the hortatory subjunctive so early and so often that it made its way into every textual history as the predominant reading.” The subjunctive makes a great deal of sense in view of the occasion of 1 Corinthians. Paul wrote to combat an over-realized eschatology in which some of the Corinthians evidently believed they were experiencing all the benefits of the resurrection body in the present, and thus that their behavior did not matter. If the subjunctive is the correct reading, it seems Paul makes two points: (1) that the resurrection is a bodily one, as distinct from an out-of-body experience, and (2) that one’s behavior in the interim does make a difference (see 15:32-34, 58).

This could account for the first variant. Although the second variant could be viewed as a conflation of (1) and (4) (so TCGNT 502; G. D. Fee, First Corinthians [NICNT], 796), it could also have arisen consciously, to guard against the notion that all whom Paul was addressing should regard themselves as true believers. The third variant, prominent in the Western witnesses, may have arisen to counter those who would deny the final resurrection (so TCGNT 502). In any event, since the fourth reading has the best credentials externally and best explains the rise of the others it should be adopted as the authentic wording here.tn See the note on the word “asleep” in 15:6.
- 1 Corinthians 15:52 tn The Greek word ῥιπή (rhipē) refers to a very rapid movement (BDAG 906 s.v.). This has traditionally been translated as “twinkling,” which implies an exceedingly fast—almost instantaneous—movement of the eyes, but this could be confusing to the modern reader since twinkling in modern English often suggests a faint, flashing light. In conjunction with the genitive ὀφθαλμοῦ (ophthalmou, “of an eye”), “blinking” is the best English equivalent (see, e.g., L&N 16.5), although it does not convey the exact speed implicit in the Greek term.
