1 Chronicles 25
The Voice

25 David and the heads of the Levites, also known as the commanders of the army, selected for the service some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun. These men were expected to serve in the temple by prophesying with lyres, harps, and cymbals. These are the singers who performed these duties in order of their descent. 2 The sons of Asaph (Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah) were directed by Asaph who prophesied because the king appointed him that duty. 3 The six sons of Jeduthun (Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah) were directed by their father Jeduthun who used the harp to prophesy, as well as to testify about the Eternal. 4-5 The 14 sons of Heman the king’s prophet were Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. His many sons and three daughters gave Heman prominence before God. 6-7 All these were directed by their father to sing with cymbals, harps, and lyres in the temple of the Eternal. These three families, 288 of whom were musically skilled, worked in the temple singing to the Eternal, but they served the king.

8 All of these men, the weak and the mighty, the students and the teachers, used a system of lots to determine their duties. These are the singers who performed in the temple in order of their duties: 9-31 Joseph (son of Asaph) drew the first lot; and the other singers drew lots in this order, second through 24th: Gedaliah, Zaccur, Izri, Nethaniah, Bukkiah, Jesharelah, Jeshaiah, Mattaniah, Shimei, Azarel, Hashabiah, Shubael, Mattithiah, Jeremoth, Hananiah, Joshbekashah, Hanani, Mallothi, Eliathah, Hothir, Giddalti, Mahazioth, and finally, Romamti-ezer. Each man who drew a lot represented 12 men, including his sons, his brothers, and himself, and these 24 groups served in the temple two weeks each year as the Levites did.

2 Pour les descendants d'Asaph: ses fils Zaccur, Joseph, Nethania et Ashareéla; ils étaient placés sous la direction d'Asaph qui prophétisait lui-même sous la direction du roi. 3 Pour Jeduthun: ses six fils Guedalia, Tseri, Esaïe, [Shimeï,] Hashabia et Matthithia; ils étaient placés sous la direction de leur père Jeduthun qui prophétisait avec la harpe pour louer et célébrer l'Eternel. 4 Pour Héman: ses fils Bukkija, Matthania, Uziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hanania, Hanani, Eliatha, Guiddalthi, Romamthi-Ezer, Joshbekasha, Mallothi, Hothir, Machazioth. 5 Ils étaient tous fils d'Héman, qui était le voyant du roi chargé de révéler les paroles de Dieu et d’élever sa puissance; Dieu lui avait donné 14 fils et 3 filles.

6 Tous ceux-là étaient sous la direction de leur père pour le chant de la maison de l'Eternel, et ils s’accompagnaient de cymbales, de luths et de harpes pour le service de la maison de Dieu. Asaph, Jeduthun et Héman étaient sous la direction du roi. 7 Ils étaient 288 en tout, avec leurs frères formés au chant en l’honneur de l'Eternel, tous ceux qui étaient maîtres en la matière. 8 Petits et grands, maîtres et disciples, ils tirèrent au sort leur ordre de service.

The Musicians

25 David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph,(A) Heman(B) and Jeduthun(C) for the ministry of prophesying,(D) accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals.(E) Here is the list of the men(F) who performed this service:(G)

2 From the sons of Asaph:

Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision.

3 As for Jeduthun, from his sons:(H)

Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[a] Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp(I) in thanking and praising the Lord.

4 As for Heman, from his sons:

Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. 5 (All these were sons of Heman the king’s seer. They were given him through the promises of God to exalt him. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.)

6 All these men were under the supervision of their father(J) for the music of the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God.

Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman(K) were under the supervision of the king.(L) 7 Along with their relatives—all of them trained and skilled in music for the Lord—they numbered 288. 8 Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots(M) for their duties.

9 The first lot, which was for Asaph,(N) fell to Joseph,

25 the eighteenth to Hanani,
