David Conquers Jerusalem
4 David and the whole Israelite army[a] advanced to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus).[b] (The Jebusites, the land’s original inhabitants, lived there.)[c] 5 The residents of Jebus said to David, “You cannot invade this place!” But David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David). 6 [d] David said, “Whoever attacks[e] the Jebusites first will become commanding general!”[f] So Joab son of Zeruiah attacked[g] first and became commander.[h]

David Conquers Jerusalem(A)
4 David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites(B) who lived there 5 said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.
6 David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander in chief.” Joab(C) son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.
