¹⁹ And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his servants. So the Syrians were not willing to help the people of Ammon anymore.

¹⁷ Then ^(A)the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord ^(B)brought the fear of him upon all nations.

¹² And it happened when Ben-Hadad heard this message, as he and the kings were ^(A)drinking at the ^[a]command post, that he said to his servants, “Get ready.” And they got ready to attack the city.

Ahab Defeats the Syrians

20 Now ^(A)Ben-Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his forces together; thirty-two kings were with him, with horses and chariots. And he went up and besieged ^(B)Samaria, and made war against it.

¹⁹ And when all the kings who were servants to ^[a]Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and ^(A)served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the people of Ammon anymore.

⁹ So they said to him: ^(A)“From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the Lord your God; for we have ^(B)heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt, ¹⁰ and ^(C)all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth. ¹¹ Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, “We are your servants; now therefore, make a covenant with us.” ’
