⁶ David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first ^(A)shall be chief and commander.” And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.

^16 (A)Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and ^(B)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder,

^23 (A)Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites;

²⁷ And when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him privately, ^(A)and there he struck him ^(B)in the stomach, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

¹⁸ And the ^(A)three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was ^(B)as swift of foot as a wild gazelle.

²⁵ And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to ^(A)defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches ^(B)and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel.”

¹⁶ And Caleb said, “Whoever strikes Kiriath-sepher and captures it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.” ^17 (A)And Othniel the son of Kenaz, ^(B)the brother of Caleb, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.
