The Barren Fig Tree Is Cursed
12 The(A) next day when they went out from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig(B) tree with leaves, he went to find out if there was anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season for figs. 14 He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit(C) from you again!”(D) And his disciples(E) heard it.
Cleansing the Temple
15 They came to Jerusalem,(F) and he went into the temple(G) and began to throw out those buying and selling. He overturned the tables of the money changers(H) and the chairs of those selling doves, 16 and would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple. 17 He was teaching them: “Is it not written,(I) My house(J) will be called a house of prayer(K) for all nations?[a] But you have made it a den of thieves!”[b](L)
18 The chief priests and the scribes(M) heard it and started looking for a way to kill him. For they were afraid(N) of him, because the whole crowd was astonished by his teaching.
19 Whenever evening came, they would go out of the city.
The Barren Fig Tree Is Withered
20 Early(O) in the morning, as they were passing by, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. 21 Then Peter(P) remembered and said to him, “Rabbi,(Q) look! The fig tree that you cursed(R) has withered.”
22 Jesus replied to them, “Have faith in God.(S) 23 Truly I tell you,(T) if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt(U) in his heart, but believes(V) that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.(W) 24 Therefore I tell you, everything you pray(X) and ask for(Y)—believe that you have received[c](Z) it and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand(AA) praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive(AB) him, so that your Father(AC) in heaven(AD) will also forgive(AE) you your wrongdoing.”[d]

Psalm 102
Affliction in light of Eternity
A prayer of a suffering person who is weak and pours out his lament before the Lord.(A)
1 Lord, hear my prayer;
let my cry for help come before you.(B)
2 Do not hide your face from me in my day of trouble.
Listen closely to me;
answer me quickly when I call.(C)
3 For my days vanish like smoke,
and my bones burn like a furnace.(D)
4 My heart is suffering, withered like grass;(E)
I even forget to eat my food.(F)
5 Because of the sound of my groaning,
my flesh sticks to my bones.(G)
6 I am like an eagle owl,
like a little owl among the ruins.(H)
7 I stay awake;(I)
I am like a solitary bird on a roof.
8 My enemies taunt me all day long;
they ridicule and use my name as a curse.(J)
9 I eat ashes like bread
and mingle my drinks with tears(K)
10 because of your indignation and wrath;
for you have picked me up and thrown me aside.(L)
11 My days are like a lengthening shadow,
and I wither away like grass.(M)
12 But you, Lord, are enthroned forever;(N)
your fame endures to all generations.(O)
13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to show favor to her—
the appointed time has come.(P)
14 For your servants take delight in its stones
and favor its dust.(Q)
15 Then the nations will fear the name of the Lord,
and all the kings of the earth your glory,(R)
16 for the Lord will rebuild Zion;
he will appear in his glory.(S)
17 He will pay attention to the prayer of the destitute
and will not despise their prayer.(T)
18 This will be written for a later generation,
and a people who have not yet been created will praise the Lord:(U)
19 He looked down from his holy heights—
the Lord gazed out from heaven to earth(V)—
20 to hear a prisoner’s groaning,
to set free those condemned to die,[a](W)
21 so that they might declare
the name of the Lord in Zion
and his praise in Jerusalem(X)
22 when peoples and kingdoms are assembled
to serve the Lord.(Y)
23 He has broken my[b] strength in midcourse;
he has shortened my days.(Z)
24 I say, “My God, do not take me
in the middle of my life![c]
Your years continue through all generations.(AA)
25 Long ago you established the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.(AB)
26 They will perish, but you will endure;
all of them will wear out like clothing.
You will change them like a garment,
and they will pass away.(AC)
27 But you are the same,
and your years will never end.(AD)
28 Your servants’ children will dwell securely,
and their offspring will be established before you.”(AE)
1 Peter 2:4-12
Christian Standard Bible
4 As you come to him, a living stone—rejected by people but chosen and honored by[a] God— 5 you yourselves, as living stones, a spiritual house, are being built to be a holy priesthood[b] to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God(A) through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture:
See, I lay a stone in Zion,(B)
a chosen and honored[c] cornerstone,(C)
and the one who believes in him
will never be put to shame.[d](D)
7 So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving,
8 and
They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined(G) for this.
9 But you are a chosen race,[g][h](H) a royal priesthood,[i](I) a holy nation,[j](J) a people for his possession,[k](K) so that you may proclaim the praises[l][m](L) of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.(M) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy,(N) but now you have received mercy.
A Call to Good Works
11 Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and exiles(O) to abstain(P) from sinful(Q) desires that wage war against the soul.(R) 12 Conduct(S) yourselves honorably among the Gentiles,[n] so that when they slander you as evildoers, they will observe your good works and will glorify God on the day he visits.(T)
