Isaiah 58:6-12

New International Version

⁶“Is not this the kind of fasting^(A) I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice^(B)
    and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed^(C) free
    and break every yoke?^(D)
⁷Is it not to share your food with the hungry^(E)
    and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter^(F)—
when you see the naked, to clothe^(G) them,
    and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?^(H)
⁸Then your light will break forth like the dawn,^(I)
    and your healing^(J) will quickly appear;
then your righteousness^[a]^(K) will go before you,
    and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.^(L)
⁹Then you will call,^(M) and the Lord will answer;^(N)
    you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
    with the pointing finger^(O) and malicious talk,^(P)
¹⁰and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
    and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,^(Q)
then your light^(R) will rise in the darkness,
    and your night will become like the noonday.^(S)
¹¹The Lord will guide^(T) you always;
    he will satisfy your needs^(U) in a sun-scorched land^(V)
    and will strengthen^(W) your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,^(X)
    like a spring^(Y) whose waters never fail.
¹²Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins^(Z)
    and will raise up the age-old foundations;^(AA)
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,^(AB)
    Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

Life by the Spirit

¹³You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.^(A) But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh^[a];^(B) rather, serve one another^(C) humbly in love. ¹⁴For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”^[b]^(D) ¹⁵If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

¹⁶So I say, walk by the Spirit,^(E) and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.^(F) ¹⁷For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.^(G) They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever^[c] you want.^(H) ¹⁸But if you are led by the Spirit,^(I) you are not under the law.^(J)

¹⁹The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,^(K) impurity and debauchery; ²⁰idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions ²¹and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.^(L) I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.^(M)

²²But the fruit^(N) of the Spirit is love,^(O) joy, peace,^(P) forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³gentleness and self-control.^(Q) Against such things there is no law.^(R)
