Acts 2:5-47

⁵Now there were Jews residing in Jerusalem, ^(A)devout men from every nation under heaven. ⁶And when ^(B)this sound occurred, the crowd came together and they were bewildered, because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own ^[a]language. ⁷^(C)They were amazed and astonished, saying, “^[b]Why, are not all these who are speaking ^(D)Galileans? ⁸And how is it that we each hear them in our own ^[c]language ^[d]to which we were born? ⁹Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and ^(E)Cappadocia, ^(F)Pontus and ^[e]^(G)Asia, ¹⁰^(H)Phrygia and ^(I)Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around ^(J)Cyrene, and ^[f]^(K)visitors from Rome, both Jews and ^[g]^(L)proselytes, ¹¹Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own ^[h]tongues of the mighty deeds of God.” ¹²And ^(M)they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” ¹³But others were jeering and saying, “^(N)They are full of ^[i]sweet wine!”

Peter’s Sermon

¹⁴But Peter, taking his stand with ^(O)the other eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, ^[j]know this, and pay attention to my words. ¹⁵For these people are not drunk, as you assume, ^(P)since it is only the ^[k]third hour of the day; ¹⁶but this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel:

¹⁷‘^(Q)And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
‘That I will pour out My Spirit on all ^[l]mankind;
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
And your young men will see visions,
And your old men will ^[m]have dreams;
¹⁸And even on My male and female ^[n]servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days,
And they will prophesy.
¹⁹And I will ^[o]display wonders in the sky above
And signs on the earth below,
Blood, fire, and ^[p]vapor of smoke.
²⁰The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
²¹And it shall be that ^(R)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

²²“Men of Israel, listen to these words: ^(S)Jesus the Nazarene, ^(T)a Man ^[q]attested to you by God with ^[r]miracles and ^(U)wonders and ^[s]signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— ²³this Man, delivered over by the ^(V)predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, ^(W)you nailed to a cross by the hands of ^[t]godless men and put Him to death. ²⁴^[u]But ^(X)God raised Him from the dead, putting an end to the ^[v]agony of death, since it ^(Y)was impossible for Him to be held ^[w]in its power. ²⁵For David says of Him,

‘^(Z)I saw the Lord continually before me,
Because He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken.
²⁶Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue was overjoyed;
Moreover my flesh also will live in hope;
²⁷For You will not abandon my soul to ^(AA)Hades,
^(AB)Nor will You ^[x]allow Your ^[y]Holy One to ^[z]undergo decay.
²⁸You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’

²⁹“^[aa]Brothers, I may confidently say to you regarding the ^(AC)patriarch David that he both ^(AD)died and ^(AE)was buried, and ^(AF)his tomb is ^[ab]with us to this day. ³⁰So because he was ^(AG)a prophet and knew that ^(AH)God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one ^[ac]of his descendants on his throne, ³¹he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the ^[ad]Christ, that ^(AI)He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh ^[ae]suffer decay. ³²It is this Jesus whom ^(AJ)God raised up, ^[af]a fact to which we are all ^(AK)witnesses. ³³Therefore, ^[ag]since He has been exalted ^[ah]^(AL)at the right hand of God, and ^(AM)has received ^(AN)the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He has ^(AO)poured out this which you both see and hear. ³⁴For it was not David who ascended into ^[ai]heaven, but he himself says:

‘^(AP)The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
³⁵Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

³⁶Therefore let all the ^(AQ)house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both ^(AR)Lord and ^[aj]Christ—this Jesus ^(AS)whom you crucified.”

³⁷Now when they heard this, they were ^[ak]pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “^[al]Brothers, ^(AT)what are we to do?” ³⁸Peter said to them, “^(AU)Repent, and each of you be ^(AV)baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹For ^(AW)the promise is for you and your children and for all who are ^(AX)far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” ⁴⁰And with many other words he solemnly ^(AY)testified and kept on urging them, saying, “^[am]Be saved from this ^(AZ)perverse generation!” ⁴¹So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand ^[an]^(BA)souls. ⁴²They were ^(BB)continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to ^(BC)the breaking of bread and ^(BD)to ^[ao]prayer.

⁴³^[ap]Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many ^(BE)wonders and ^[aq]signs were taking place through the apostles. ⁴⁴And all the believers ^[ar]were together and ^(BF)had all things in common; ⁴⁵and they ^(BG)would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need. ⁴⁶^(BH)Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and ^(BI)breaking bread ^[as]from house to house, they were taking their ^[at]meals together with gladness and ^[au]sincerity of heart, ⁴⁷praising God and ^(BJ)having favor with all the people. And the Lord ^(BK)was adding to ^[av]their number day by day ^(BL)those who were being saved.
