ד ידידי היקרים, היזהרו מפני נביאי-השקר הרבים שמסתובבים בעולם. אל תאמינו בצורה עיוורת לכל מה שאתם שומעים, אלא בחנו את הנאמר – האם דבריהם מרוח הקודש או לא? ²שאלו את הנביאים האלה אם הם מאמינים ומודים שישוע המשיח, בן-האלוהים, בא לעולם בדמות אדם בשר ודם. אם כן – דבריהם מאלוהים. ³אם לא – הם נביאי שקר שמדברים בהשראת שונא-המשיח, שעל דבר בואו הוזהרתם. הוא באמת בא, ושנאתו כבר התפשטה בכל העולם.

⁴בני היקרים, אתם שייכים לאלוהים וניצחתם במערכה נגד האנשים האלה, כי רוח-הקודש ששוכן בכם חזק וגדול מהרוח שבעולם. ⁵נביאי שקר אלה שייכים לעולם הזה, וטבעי שהם מתעניינים בענייני העולם, ושהעולם מתעניין בהם. ⁶אבל אנחנו בני-אלוהים, ומשום כך רק האוהבים את אלוהים מקשיבים לדברינו. האחרים אינם מקשיבים, כי אינם מבינים כלל על מה אנחנו מדברים. כך אפשר גם לבחון אם הנאמר הוא מאלוהים או לא, שכן אם הנאמר הוא בהשראת אלוהים, העולם כלל לא יקשיב.

⁷ידידים יקרים, הבה נאהב איש את רעהו, כי אלוהים הוא מקור האהבה. אנשים שמלאים אהבה מעידים כי הם בני-אלוהים וכי הם מכירים אותו אישית. ⁸ואילו אנשים חסרי אהבה מעידים שאין הם מכירים את אלוהים, כי אלוהים הוא אהבה.

⁹אלוהים הוכיח עד כמה הוא אוהב אותנו, כששלח את בנו היחיד למות בידי העולם המרושע הזה, כדי שעל-ידי מותו נזכה בחיי נצח. ¹⁰היודעים אתם מהי אהבה אמיתית? לא אהבתנו לאלוהים, כי אם אהבתו אלינו – כששלח את בנו לסבול את העונש על חטאינו.

¹¹ידידים יקרים, אם אלוהים אהב אותנו כל-כך, גם אנחנו צריכים לאהוב איש את רעהו. ¹²אמנם איש לא ראה עדיין את אלוהים, אך כשאנו אוהבים איש את רעהו, אנו מרגישים ויודעים שאלוהים חי בקרבנו, ושאהבתו בנו גדלה ומתחזקת.

¹³אלוהים השכין בנו את רוח הקודש כאישור והוכחה לכך שהוא חי בנו ושאנו חיים בו. ¹⁴במו עינינו ראינו שאלוהים שלח את בנו להושיע את העולם, ולכן אנו מספרים זאת לכולם. ¹⁵כל המאמין ומודה שישוע הוא בן-האלוהים, אלוהים שוכן בו והוא באלוהים.

¹⁶כיצד אנו יודעים שאלוהים אוהב אותנו? ראשית, אנחנו מרגישים את אהבתו; שנית, אנחנו מאמינים לדבריו, שכן הוא אמר לנו שהוא באמת אוהב אותנו. אלוהים הוא אהבה! לכן כל מי שחי באהבה חי באלוהים, ואלוהים חי בו. ¹⁷כשאנו חיים במשיח אהבתנו גדלה ונשלמת, וביום-הדין לא נתבייש ולא נפחד מפניו, אלא נפגוש אותו בביטחון ובשמחה, כי הוא אוהב אותנו ואנו אוהבים אותו.

¹⁸איננו פוחדים ממי שאוהב אותנו אהבה מושלמת; אהבתו המושלמת מגרשת כל פחד וחשש. אם אנו פוחדים, הרי זה ממה שהוא עלול לעשות לנו, והדבר מראה שאיננו משוכנעים לגמרי שהוא אוהב אותנו. ¹⁹אם כן, אנחנו אוהבים אותו משום שהוא אהב אותנו תחילה.

²⁰מי שטוען "אני אוהב את אלוהים!" אך ממשיך לשנוא את אחיו, הוא שקרן! כי אם אינו יכול לאהוב את אחיו שעומד לפניו, כיצד יוכל לאהוב את האלוהים שלא ראה מעולם? ²¹ואלוהים ציווה עלינו לאהוב לא רק אותו, אלא גם את אחינו.

4 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

²Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

³And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

⁴Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

⁵They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

⁶We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

⁷Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

⁸He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

⁹In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

¹⁰Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

¹¹Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

¹²No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

¹³Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

¹⁴And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

¹⁵Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

Love for God and One Another

Knowing God Through Love^(H)

⁷^(I)Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who ^(J)loves is born of God and knows God. ⁸He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. ⁹^(K)In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten ^(L)Son into the world, that we might live through Him. ¹⁰In this is love, ^(M)not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son ^(N)to be the propitiation for our sins. ¹¹Beloved, ^(O)if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Seeing God Through Love

¹²^(P)No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. ¹³^(Q)By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. ¹⁴And ^(R)we have seen and testify that ^(S)the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. ¹⁵^(T)Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. ¹⁶And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and ^(U)he who abides in love abides in God, and God ^(V)in him.

The Consummation of Love

¹⁷Love has been perfected among us in this: that ^(W)we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. ¹⁸There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. ¹⁹^(X)We love ^[c]Him because He first loved us.

Obedience by Faith

²⁰^(Y)If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, ^[d]how can he love God ^(Z)whom he has not seen? ²¹And ^(AA)this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.
