11 믿음은 우리가 바라는 것들에 대한 실물이며 보이지 않는 것들에 대한 증거입니다.
2 옛날 사람들도 이 믿음으로 하나님의 인정을 받았습니다.
3 믿음으로 우리는 이 세상의 모든 것이 하나님의 말씀으로 창조되었으며 보이는 것이 보이지 않는 것으로 만들어졌다는 것을 압니다.
4 믿음으로 아벨은 가인보다 더 나은 제사를 하나님께 드렸습니다. 하나님께서는 아벨이 믿음으로 드린 제물을 기꺼이 받으시고 그를 의로운 사람으로 인정해 주셨습니다. 그는 죽었지만 지금도 여전히 말을 하고 있습니다.
5 믿음으로 에녹은 죽지 않고 하늘로 옮겨 갔기 때문에 아무도 그를 볼 수 없었습니다. 하나님께서 그를 데려가신 것입니다. 그는 옮겨 가기 전부터 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 사람으로 인정을 받았습니다.
6 믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 없습니다. 하나님에게 나아가는 사람은 그분이 계시는 것과 또 그분을 진정으로 찾는 사람들에게 상을 주신다는 것을 반드시 믿어야 합니다.
7 믿음으로 노아는 아직 보이지 않는 일들에 대하여 하나님의 경고를 받고 그분을 두려워하는 마음으로 지체없이 배를 만들어 홍수 때에 가족을 구원해 냈습니다. 그래서 그는 세상에 죄가 있음을 선언하였고 믿음에 의한 의의 상속자가 되었습니다.
8 믿음으로 아브라함은 하나님이 주시겠다고 약속하신 땅으로 가라는 명령을 받고 그대로 순종하였습니다. 그는 가야 할 곳이 어딘지도 모르는 채 떠났던 것입니다.
9 믿음으로 그는 약속받은 낯선 땅으로 가서 같은 약속을 받은 이삭과 야곱과 함께 나그네처럼 천막 생활을 하였습니다.
10 그것은 하나님께서 설계하여 세우신 [a]견고한 하늘의 도성을 바라고 있었기 때문입니다.
11 그의 아내 사라도 너무 늙어 아기를 낳을 수 없었으나 믿음으로 임신하게 되었습니다. 그녀는 약속하신 분이 신실하다고 생각했던 것입니다.
12 이리하여 죽은 사람이나 다름없는 늙은 아브라함에게서 하늘의 별과 바닷가의 모래와 같은 수많은 후손이 나오게 되었습니다.
13 이 사람들은 모두 믿음을 따라 살다가 죽었습니다. 그들은 약속된 것을 받지 못했으나 그것을 멀리서 바라보고 기뻐했습니다. 그리고 그들은 이 세상에서 잠시 머무는 나그네에 불과하다는 것을 고백했습니다.
14 이와 같이 그들은 찾고 있는 고향이 따로 있다는 것을 보여 주었습니다.
15 그들이 떠나온 옛 고향을 생각하고 있었다면 돌아갈 수도 있었을 것입니다.
16 그러나 그들은 더 나은 하늘에 있는 고향을 그리워하고 있었습니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 그들의 하나님이라고 불리는 것을 부끄러워하시지 않고 오히려 그들을 위해 한 성을 마련해 주셨습니다.
17 아브라함은 시험을 받았을 때 믿음으로 이삭을 바쳤습니다. 그는 많은 후손을 보게 될 것이라는 하나님의 약속을 받은 사람인데도 하나밖에 없는 외아들을 바친 것입니다.
18 하나님은 아브라함에게 [b]“이삭을 통해서 난 사람이라야 네 후손으로 인정될 것이다” 라고 말씀하셨습니다.
19 아브라함은 하나님께서 죽은 사람들까지도 다시 살리실 수 있다고 믿었습니다. 말하자면 아브라함은 죽은 사람들 가운데서 이삭을 다시 받은 셈입니다.
20 믿음으로 이삭은 야곱과 에서의 장래에 대하여 축복해 주었습니다.
21 믿음으로 야곱은 죽을 때 요셉의 아들들을 하나하나 축복해 주었고 또한 그의 지팡이를 의지하여 하나님께 경배드렸습니다.
22 믿음으로 요셉은 죽을 때 이스라엘 백성이 이집트를 빠져나갈 것을 말하고 또한 자기 뼈를 가나안 땅에 묻도록 지시했습니다.
23 모세가 태어났을 때 그의 부모는 아름다운 아이임을 보고 믿음으로 그를 석 달 동안이나 숨겨 두었으며 이집트 왕의 명령도 두려워하지 않았습니다.
24 성장한 모세는 믿음으로 이집트 공주의 아들이 되는 것을 거절했습니다.
25 그는 일시적인 죄의 쾌락을 누리는 것보다는 하나님의 백성과 함께 고통당하는 길을 택한 것입니다.
26 모세는 약속된 메시아를 위해 받는 고난을 이집트의 보물보다 더 값진 것으로 여겼습니다. 그것은 장차 상 받을 것을 기대하고 있었기 때문입니다.
27 믿음으로 모세는 왕의 분노를 두려워하지 않고 이집트를 떠났습니다. 그는 보이지 않는 하나님을 보는 것같이 꾸준히 견디어 나갔던 것입니다.
28 믿음으로 모세는 유월절과 피 뿌리는 의식을 행하여 맏아들을 죽이는 천사가 이스라엘 백성의 장자들을 건드리지 못하게 했습니다.
29 믿음으로 이스라엘 백성들은 육지를 걷듯이 홍해를 건넜으나 이집트 사람들은 건너려다 모두 빠져 죽고 말았습니다.
30 믿음으로 이스라엘 백성들이 여리고성 둘레를 7일 동안 돌자 성이 무너지고 말았습니다.
31 믿음으로 기생 라합은 여리고성을 정탐하러 온 이스라엘 사람들을 친절하게 도와주어 순종치 않던 사람들이 멸망당할 때 구원을 받았습니다.
믿음으로 산 사람들
32 그 밖에 기드온, 바락, 삼손, 입다, 다윗, 사무엘, 그리고 다른 예언자들에 대하여 하나하나 다 말하자면 끝이 없을 것입니다.
33 그들은 믿음으로 여러 나라를 정복하였고 옳은 일을 하였으며 약속된 것을 받았고 사자들의 입을 막기도 했습니다.
34 또 불 가운데서 구원을 받았고 칼날도 피했으며 약한 사람이 강해지고 싸움터에서 용감하게 외국 군대를 무찌르기도 하였습니다.
35 그리고 어떤 여자들은 죽은 가족을 다시 살아난 상태에서 맞이하기도 하였으며 어떤 사람들은 더 나은 부활을 얻기 위해 고문을 당해도 풀려나기를 거절했습니다.
36 또 어떤 사람들은 조롱을 받고 채찍으로 맞았으며 사슬에 묶여 갇히기도 했습니다.
37 또한 돌로 맞기도 하고 시험을 당하며 톱으로 몸이 잘리거나 칼날에 죽음을 당하기도 하였습니다. 그리고 양이나 염소의 가죽으로 옷을 삼아 두르고 다녔으며 가난과 고통에 시달리고 온갖 학대를 받았습니다.
38 세상은 그들에게 아무 가치가 없었습니다. 그래서 그들은 광야와 산과 동굴과 땅굴을 찾아다니며 지냈습니다.
39 이 사람들은 모두 믿음으로 여러 가지 증거를 받았지만 약속된 것을 받지는 못하였습니다.
40 그것은 하나님께서 우리를 위해 더 좋은 것을 마련하시고 우리와 함께 그들이 완전해지도록 하셨기 때문입니다.

믿음
11 믿음은, 우리가 바라는 것을 굳게 믿는 것이며, 비록 눈으로는 볼 수 없는 것들이라도 실제로 존재한다는 것을 분명히 아는 것입니다. 2 옛날에 살았던 우리 조상들은 그런 믿음 때문에 하나님의 칭찬을 받았습니다.
3 우리는 믿음으로 하나님께서 말씀으로 이 우주를 만드셨다는 것, 곧 우리의 눈에 보이는 것이 보이지 않는 것에서 나왔다는 것을 압니다.
4 가인과 아벨 두 사람이 다 하나님께 제물을 바쳤습니다. 그러나 아벨은 믿음으로 바쳤기 때문에 가인보다 더 나은 제사를 바쳤습니다. 하나님께서는 아벨이 바친 것을 보고 기뻐하셨습니다. 그리고 그의 믿음을 보시고 그를 의로운 사람이라고 칭찬하셨습니다. 아벨은 죽었습니다. 그러나 그는 아직도 그의 믿음을 통해서 말하고 있습니다.
5 믿음으로 에녹은 이 땅에서 들려 올라갔습니다. 그는 죽지 않았습니다. 하나님께서 그를 데려가셨기 때문에 그를 찾을 수 없었습니다. 그는 들려 올라가기 전에, 하나님을 기쁘시게 해 드리는 사람이라는 칭찬을 받았습니다. 6 믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 해 드릴 수 없습니다. 누구든지 하나님께 오는 사람은 하나님이 계시다는 것을 믿고, 또 하나님께서는 진심으로 당신을 찾는 사람들에게 상을 주신다는 것을 믿어야 합니다.
7 하나님께서는 노아가 아직 눈으로 볼 수 없는 것들에 관해서 경고의 말씀을 하셨습니다. 그러나 노아에게는 하나님에 대한 믿음과 그분을 존경하는 마음이 있었습니다. 그리하여, 그는 자기 가족을 구하기 위하여 큰 배를 지었습니다. 노아는 자신의 믿음으로 나머지 세상 사람들을 정죄하였습니다. 그리고 하나님께서 믿음을 보시고 받아 주실 만한 사람으로 여겨 주시는 사람들 가운데 들게 되었습니다.
8 하나님께서는 아브라함을 불러 장차 그에게 유산으로 주실 땅으로 가라고 분부하셨습니다. 그는 믿음으로 순종하고 떠났습니다. 그때에 그는 자기가 갈 곳이 어디인지도 몰랐습니다. 9 믿음으로 그는 낯선 나라에 가서 약속받은 땅을 고향으로 삼고 살았습니다. 그러나 그는 나그네처럼 천막에서 살았습니다. 그리고 그와 더불어 같은 약속을 받은 이삭과 야곱도 천막에서 살았습니다. 10 아브라함은 튼튼한 기초 위에 놓인 도시[a]를 간절히 바라고 있었습니다. 그것을 설계하고 세우시는 분은 하나님이십니다.
11 믿음으로 아브라함은 아버지가 될 수 있었습니다. 그는 너무 늙어 아이를 낳을 수 있는 나이가 지났고, 그의 아내인 사라는 아기를 가질 수 없는 몸이었습니다. 그러나 그는 자기에게 아들을 주시겠다고 약속하신 하나님이 신실한 분이시라는 것을 믿었습니다. 12 그리하여 죽은 것과 마찬가지였던 이 한 사람에게서, 하늘의 별처럼 바닷가의 모래알처럼 많은 자손이 나왔습니다.
13 이 모든 사람은 죽을 때에도 여전히 믿음으로 살고 있었습니다. 그들은 살아 있는 동안에 약속된 것들을 받지 못했습니다. 그들은 다만 그것들을 멀리서 보았을 뿐입니다. 그러나 그들은 기뻐하였습니다. 그리고 자기들이 이 땅에서는 타향 사람이며 나그네일 뿐이라는 사실을 인정하였습니다. 14 그들은 그렇게 말함으로써 자기들의 나라가 따로 있다는 것을 보여 주었습니다. 15 만일 그들이 떠나 온 나라를 두고 그런 말을 한 것이었다면, 어떻게 해서든 그리로 돌아갈 길을 찾아냈을 것입니다. 16 그러나 그들은 더 나은 나라, 곧 하늘에 있는 나라를 그리워하고 있었습니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 그들의 하나님이라고 불리는 것을 부끄럽게 여기지 않으시고, 오히려 그들에게 한 도시를 마련해 주셨습니다.
17 하나님께서 아브라함을 시험하려고 이삭을 바치라고 하셨을 때, 아브라함은 믿음이 있었기에 아들을 제물로 바쳤습니다. 이삭은 하나님께서 주시겠다고 약속하신 외아들이었습니다. 그러나 아브라함은 기꺼이 그를 바쳤습니다. 18 하나님께서 “이삭을 통하여 네 자손이 태어날 것이다.”(A)라고 말씀하셨고, 이삭이 바로 그 아들이었는데도 말입니다. 19 아브라함은 하나님께서 이삭을 죽은 사람들 가운데서 다시 살리실 수 있다고 생각했습니다. 그러므로 아브라함은 죽은 사람들 가운데에서 다시 살아난 이삭을 돌려받은 셈입니다.
20 이삭은 믿음으로 야곱과 에서에게 복을 빌어 주었습니다. 그에게는 장차 하나님께서 하실 일에 대한 확실한 믿음이 있었습니다. 21 야곱은 믿음으로 죽음을 앞두고 요셉의 아들들을 한 사람씩 축복해 주었으며, 지팡이에 몸을 기대고 하나님께 예배를 드렸습니다.
22 요셉은 죽을 때에 믿음으로 이스라엘 백성이 이집트에서 나갈 일을 말하고, 자기의 뼈를 어떻게 할 것인지에 관한 지시를 내렸습니다.
23 모세가 태어났을 때 그 부모는 믿음으로 그를 석 달 동안 숨겨 두었습니다. 그들은 그 아기가 여느 아기가 아니라는 것을 알았기 때문입니다. 그들은 왕의 명령도 두려워하지 않았습니다.
24 모세는 어른이 되었을 때에, 믿음으로 파라오의 딸의 아들이라고 불리기를 거절하였습니다. 25 그는 죄가 주는 일시적인 쾌락을 즐기기보다는, 오히려 하나님의 백성과 함께 학대 받는 길을 택하였습니다. 26 모세는 그리스도를 위해서 당하는 모욕을 이집트의 보물보다 더 값지게 생각하였습니다. 앞으로 받게 될 상을 미리 내다보고 있었기 때문입니다. 27 그는 믿음으로 이집트를 떠났습니다. 그는 왕의 노여움도 두려워하지 않았습니다. 그는 보이지 않는 하나님을 보았기 때문에 참고 견디어 냈습니다. 28 그는 믿음으로 이스라엘 백성에게 유월절을 지키고, 그들의 문설주에 피를 뿌리라고 명하였습니다. 그리하여 맏아들을 죽이는 자[b]가 이스라엘 백성의 맏아들은 해치지 못하게 하였습니다.
29 믿음으로 이스라엘 백성은 갈대바다를 마치 마른 땅처럼 건넜습니다. 그러나 이집트 사람들은 그렇게 건너려 하다가 물에 빠져 죽었습니다.
30 믿음으로 이스라엘 백성이 이레 동안 여리고 성을 돌고 나자 그 성벽이 무너졌습니다.
31 믿음으로 몸 파는 여자인 라합은 이스라엘 정탐꾼들을 친절하게 맞아 주었습니다. 그래서 순종하지 않는 자들과 함께 죽임을 당하지 않았습니다.
32 이제 내가 무슨 말을 더 하겠습니까? 내게는 기드온과 바락과 삼손과 입다와 다윗과 사무엘과 예언자들에 관하여 일일이 이야기할 시간이 없습니다. 33 그들은 믿음으로 여러 왕국을 정복하였습니다. 그들은 정의를 실천하고 하나님께서 약속하신 것을 받았습니다. 그리고 사자들의 입을 막았습니다. 34 그들은 성난 불길을 꺾고 칼날을 피하였습니다. 그들은 약함 가운데서 강하여졌습니다. 그들은 싸움터에서 용맹을 떨치고 외국 군대들을 물리쳤습니다.
35 여자들은 죽었다가 다시 살아난 가족들을 되돌려 받았습니다. 또 어떤 사람들은 놓아 주겠다는 것도 거부하고 고문을 당하였습니다. 더 좋은 부활의 삶을 얻으려는 것이었습니다. 36 어떤 사람들은 놀림을 당하고 채찍으로 맞았으며, 또 어떤 사람들은 쇠사슬에 묶여 감옥에 갇혔습니다. 37 그들은 돌로 맞고, 톱질을 당하여 몸이 둘로 갈라지고, 칼에 맞아 죽었습니다. 그들은 가난하고, 박해[c]를 받고 학대를 당하면서, 양 가죽과 염소 가죽을 걸치고 떠돌았습니다. 38 세상은 그런 사람들을 받아들일 만한 곳이 되지 못했습니다. 그래서 그들은 광야와 산을 헤매기도 하고 동굴과 땅굴 속에서 살기도 하였습니다.

Faith in Action
11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(A) and assurance about what we do not see.(B) 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.(C)
3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(D) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
4 By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(E) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(F) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(G)
5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[a](H) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(I) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,(J) in holy fear built an ark(K) to save his family.(L) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.(M)
8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,(N) obeyed and went,(O) even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land(P) like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents,(Q) as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.(R) 10 For he was looking forward to the city(S) with foundations,(T) whose architect and builder is God.(U) 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age,(V) was enabled to bear children(W) because she[b] considered him faithful(X) who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead,(Y) came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.(Z)
13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;(AA) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,(AB) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.(AC) 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.(AD) 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.(AE) Therefore God is not ashamed(AF) to be called their God,(AG) for he has prepared a city(AH) for them.
17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.(AI) He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[c](AJ) 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,(AK) and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.(AL)
21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons,(AM) and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.
22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.(AN)
23 By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born,(AO) because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.(AP)
24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.(AQ) 25 He chose to be mistreated(AR) along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace(AS) for the sake of Christ(AT) as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.(AU) 27 By faith he left Egypt,(AV) not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer(AW) of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.(AX)
29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.(AY)
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.(AZ)
31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.[d](BA)
32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,(BB) Barak,(BC) Samson(BD) and Jephthah,(BE) about David(BF) and Samuel(BG) and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms,(BH) administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,(BI) 34 quenched the fury of the flames,(BJ) and escaped the edge of the sword;(BK) whose weakness was turned to strength;(BL) and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.(BM) 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.(BN) There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging,(BO) and even chains and imprisonment.(BP) 37 They were put to death by stoning;[e](BQ) they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword.(BR) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,(BS) destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38 the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves(BT) and in holes in the ground.
39 These were all commended(BU) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,(BV) 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us(BW) would they be made perfect.(BX)

By Faith We Understand
11 Now faith is the [a]substance of things hoped for, the [b]evidence (A)of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
3 By faith we understand that (B)the [c]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

4 By faith (D)Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still (E)speaks.
5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, (F)“and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

13 These all died in faith, (U)not having received the (V)promises, but (W)having seen them afar off [e]were assured of them, embraced them and (X)confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things (Y)declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind (Z)that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed (AA)to be called their God, for He has (AB)prepared a city for them.
The Faith of the Patriarchs(AC)
17 By faith Abraham, (AD)when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 [f]of whom it was said, (AE)“In Isaac your seed shall be called,” 19 concluding that God (AF)was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.
20 By faith (AG)Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, (AH)blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.
22 By faith (AI)Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.
The Faith of Moses(AJ)
23 By faith (AK)Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s (AL)command.
24 By faith (AM)Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the [g]passing pleasures of sin, 26 esteeming (AN)the [h]reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures [i]in Egypt; for he looked to the (AO)reward.
27 By faith (AP)he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. 28 By faith (AQ)he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
29 By faith (AR)they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.
By Faith They Overcame
30 By faith (AS)the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. 31 By faith (AT)the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who [j]did not believe, when (AU)she had received the spies with peace.
32 And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of (AV)Gideon and (AW)Barak and (AX)Samson and (AY)Jephthah, also of (AZ)David and (BA)Samuel and the prophets: 33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, (BB)stopped the mouths of lions, 34 (BC)quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 (BD)Women received their dead raised to life again.
Others were (BE)tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. 36 Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and (BF)of chains and imprisonment. 37 (BG)They were stoned, they were sawn in two, [k]were tempted, were slain with the sword. (BH)They wandered about (BI)in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— 38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, (BJ)in dens and caves of the earth.
39 And all these, (BK)having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be (BL)made perfect apart from us.
