예수께서 다시 오실 것이다
3 사랑하는 여러분, 이것이 내가 여러분에게 두 번째로 쓰는 편지입니다. 나는 두 편지를 통해 여러분의 기억을 되살려, 여러분이 건전한 생각을 하도록 일깨우려고 합니다. 2 그렇게 하여 예전에 하나님의 거룩한 예언자들이 하신 말씀과, 우리 주 구세주께서 여러분의 사도들을 통하여 주신 계명을, 여러분의 기억 속에 되살리려는 것입니다. 3 무엇보다도 먼저 여러분이 알아야 할 것이 있습니다. 마지막 날에, 자기들의 악한 욕망을 따라 살아가는 자들이 여러분을 비웃으리라는 것입니다. 4 그들은 이렇게 말할 것입니다. “그리스도가 다시 오신다는 약속은 어떻게 되었느냐? 그 약속을 기다리던 우리 조상들이 죽은 뒤로도, 모든 것이 처음 창조되었을 때와 똑같이 그대로 이어지고 있다.” 5 그러나 그들은 하나님의 말씀으로 오래 전에 하늘과 땅이 생겨났다는 사실을 일부러 무시하고 있습니다. 하나님의 말씀으로 땅이 물에서 나왔고 또 물에 의하여 이루어졌습니다. 6 또한 이 물에 잠겨 그 옛 세상은 멸망했습니다. 7 그러나 같은 말씀에 의하여 지금의 하늘과 땅은 불로 망할 때까지 그대로 남아 있습니다. 하늘과 땅은 하나님을 거부하는 자들이 심판을 받고 멸망할 때까지 그대로 있을 것입니다.
8 그러나 사랑하는 여러분, 이것 하나는 잊지 마십시오. 주님께는 하루가 천 년 같고 천 년이 하루 같습니다.[a] 9 어떤 사람들이 생각하는 것처럼 주께서 약속을 더디게 지키시는 것이 아닙니다. 다만 여러분을 위해서 오래 참고 계신 것입니다. 그분께서는 아무도 멸망하지 않고, 모든 사람이 회개하기를 바라십니다.
10 그러나 주님의 날은 마치 도둑처럼 올 것입니다. 하늘은 요란한 소리를 내면서 사라지고, 하늘에 있는 모든 것[b]은 불에 녹아 없어질 것입니다.[c] 그리고 땅과 땅에 있는 것이 모두 발가벗겨진 채로 드러날 것입니다. 11 모든 것이 이렇게 녹아 버릴 터인데, 여러분은 과연 어떤 사람이 되어야 하겠습니까? 여러분은 거룩하고 경건하게 살면서, 12 하나님의 날을 기다리며 그날을 앞당겨야 하지 않겠습니까? 그날이 오면 하늘은 불에 타 녹아지고, 하늘에 있는 모든 것은 그 열로 녹아 버릴 것입니다. 13 그러나 우리는 하나님의 약속에 따라 새 하늘과 새 땅을 기다리고 있습니다. 그곳은 정의가 살고 있는 곳입니다.
14 그러니 사랑하는 여러분, 여러분은 이런 것들을 기다리고 있으니만큼, 티도 없고 흠도 없이 살며 하나님과 화평을 누리도록 모든 노력을 다 기울이십시오. 15 그리고 우리 주님이 오랫동안 참아 주셨기 때문에 우리가 구원을 받을 수 있다는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 그것은 사랑하는 형제 바울이 하나님께 받은 지혜를 따라서 여러분에게 편지로 쓴 것과 같습니다. 16 바울은 그가 쓰는 모든 편지에서 이런 일들에 관하여 말하고 있습니다. 그의 편지들에는 무슨 말인지 알기 어려운 내용들이 들어 있습니다. 그래서 배우지 못한 사람들이나 믿음이 흔들리는 사람들은, 다른 성경을 비뚤어지게 해석하듯이 그 편지의 뜻도 비뚤어지게 해석하여 마침내 스스로 파멸에 이르고 말 것입니다.
17 그러므로 사랑하는 여러분, 여러분은 이것을 이미 알고 있으니, 무법자들이 저지르는 잘못에 휩쓸려 여러분 자신의 안정을 잃지 않도록 주의하십시오. 18 우리의 주님이시고 구세주이신 예수 그리스도의 은혜 안에서, 그리고 그분이 주시는 지식 안에서 계속 자라 가십시오. 지금과 또 영원히 그분께 영광이 있기를 빕니다. 아멘.

3 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

The Day of the Lord
3 Dear friends,(A) this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders(B) to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets(C) and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.(D)
3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days(E) scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.(F) 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?(G) Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”(H) 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word(I) the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.(J) 6 By these waters also the world of that time(K) was deluged and destroyed.(L) 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(M) being kept for the day of judgment(N) and destruction of the ungodly.
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(O) 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(P) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(Q) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(R)
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(S) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(T) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(U) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a](V)
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(W) to the day of God and speed its coming.[b](X) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(Y) 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth,(Z) where righteousness dwells.
14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless(AA) and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience(AB) means salvation,(AC) just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.(AD) 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable(AE) people distort,(AF) as they do the other Scriptures,(AG) to their own destruction.
17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard(AH) so that you may not be carried away by the error(AI) of the lawless(AJ) and fall from your secure position.(AK) 18 But grow in the grace(AL) and knowledge(AM) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(AN) To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.(AO)
