Booz se casa con Rut
4 Booz subió a la puerta y se sentó allí; y he aquí pasaba aquel pariente de quien Booz había hablado, y le dijo: Eh, fulano, ven acá y siéntate. Y él vino y se sentó. 2 Entonces él tomó a diez varones de los ancianos de la ciudad, y dijo: Sentaos aquí. Y ellos se sentaron. 3 Luego dijo al pariente: Noemí, que ha vuelto del campo de Moab, vende una parte de las tierras que tuvo nuestro hermano Elimelec. 4 Y yo decidí hacértelo saber, y decirte que la compres en presencia de los que están aquí sentados, y de los ancianos de mi pueblo. Si tú quieres redimir, redime; y si no quieres redimir, decláramelo para que yo lo sepa; porque no hay otro que redima sino tú, y yo después de ti. Y él respondió: Yo redimiré.
5 Entonces replicó Booz: El mismo día que compres las tierras de mano de Noemí, debes tomar también a Rut la moabita, mujer del difunto, para que restaures el nombre del muerto sobre su posesión. 6 Y respondió el pariente: No puedo redimir para mí, no sea que dañe mi heredad. Redime tú, usando de mi derecho, porque yo no podré redimir.
7 Había ya desde hacía tiempo esta costumbre en Israel tocante a la redención y al contrato, que para la confirmación de cualquier negocio, el uno se quitaba el zapato y lo daba a su compañero; y esto servía de testimonio en Israel. 8 Entonces el pariente dijo a Booz: Tómalo tú. Y se quitó el zapato.(A) 9 Y Booz dijo a los ancianos y a todo el pueblo: Vosotros sois testigos hoy, de que he adquirido de mano de Noemí todo lo que fue de Elimelec, y todo lo que fue de Quelión y de Mahlón. 10 Y que también tomo por mi mujer a Rut la moabita, mujer de Mahlón, para restaurar el nombre del difunto sobre su heredad, para que el nombre del muerto no se borre de entre sus hermanos y de la puerta de su lugar. Vosotros sois testigos hoy. 11 Y dijeron todos los del pueblo que estaban a la puerta con los ancianos: Testigos somos. Jehová haga a la mujer que entra en tu casa como a Raquel y a Lea, las cuales edificaron la casa de Israel;(B) y tú seas ilustre en Efrata, y seas de renombre en Belén. 12 Y sea tu casa como la casa de Fares, el que Tamar dio a luz a Judá,(C) por la descendencia que de esa joven te dé Jehová.
13 Booz, pues, tomó a Rut, y ella fue su mujer; y se llegó a ella, y Jehová le dio que concibiese y diese a luz un hijo. 14 Y las mujeres decían a Noemí: Loado sea Jehová, que hizo que no te faltase hoy pariente, cuyo nombre será celebrado en Israel; 15 el cual será restaurador de tu alma, y sustentará tu vejez; pues tu nuera, que te ama, lo ha dado a luz; y ella es de más valor para ti que siete hijos. 16 Y tomando Noemí el hijo, lo puso en su regazo, y fue su aya. 17 Y le dieron nombre las vecinas, diciendo: Le ha nacido un hijo a Noemí; y lo llamaron Obed. Este es padre de Isaí, padre de David.
18 Estas son las generaciones de Fares:(D) Fares engendró a Hezrón, 19 Hezrón engendró a Ram, y Ram engendró a Aminadab, 20 Aminadab engendró a Naasón, y Naasón engendró a Salmón, 21 Salmón engendró a Booz, y Booz engendró a Obed, 22 Obed engendró a Isaí, e Isaí engendró a David.

4 Booz, por su parte, subió hasta la puerta de la ciudad y se sentó allí. En eso pasó el pariente, que él había mencionado, responsable de redimirlas.
—Ven acá, amigo mío, y siéntate —dijo Booz.
El hombre fue y se sentó.
2 Entonces Booz llamó a diez de los jefes de la ciudad y les dijo:
—Siéntense aquí.
Y ellos se sentaron. 3 Booz dijo al pariente redentor:
—Noemí, que ha regresado de la tierra de Moab, está vendiendo el terreno que perteneció a nuestro hermano Elimélec. 4 Consideré que debía informarte del asunto y sugerirte que lo compres en presencia de estos testigos y de los jefes de mi pueblo. Si vas a comprar el terreno, hazlo. Pero si no lo vas[a] a comprar, dímelo, para que yo lo sepa. Porque ningún otro tiene el derecho de redimirlo, sino tú y, después de ti, yo tengo ese derecho.
—Yo lo redimo —contestó.
5 Pero Booz aclaró:
—El día que adquieras el terreno de Noemí, adquieres también a Rut la moabita, viuda[b] del difunto, a fin de conservar su nombre junto con su heredad.
6 —Entonces no puedo redimirlo —respondió el pariente redentor—, porque podría perjudicar mi propia herencia. Redímelo tú; te cedo mi derecho. Yo no puedo ejercerlo.
7 En aquellos tiempos, para ratificar el rescate o el traspaso de una propiedad en Israel, una de las partes contratantes se quitaba la sandalia y se la daba a la otra. Así se acostumbraba a legalizar los contratos en Israel.
8 Por eso el pariente redentor le dijo a Booz:
—Cómpralo tú.
Y se quitó la sandalia.
9 Entonces Booz proclamó ante los jefes y ante todo el pueblo:
—Hoy son ustedes testigos de que le he comprado a Noemí toda la propiedad de Elimélec, Quilión y Majlón. 10 También he tomado como esposa a Rut la moabita, viuda de Majlón, a fin de preservar el nombre del difunto con su heredad, para que su nombre no desaparezca de entre su familia ni de los registros del pueblo. ¡Hoy son ustedes testigos!
11 Los jefes y todos los que estaban en la puerta respondieron:
—Somos testigos. ¡Que el Señor haga que la mujer que va a formar parte de tu hogar sea como Raquel y Lea, quienes juntas edificaron el pueblo de Israel!
»¡Que seas un hombre ilustre en Efrata y que adquieras renombre en Belén! 12 ¡Que por medio de esta joven el Señor te conceda una descendencia tal que tu familia sea como la de Fares, el hijo que Tamar dio a Judá!

13 Así que Booz tomó a Rut y se casó con ella. Cuando se unieron, el Señor le concedió quedar embarazada, de modo que tuvo un hijo. 14 Las mujeres decían a Noemí: «¡Alabado sea el Señor, que no te ha dejado hoy sin un redentor! ¡Que llegue a tener renombre en Israel! 15 Este niño renovará tu vida y te sustentará en la vejez, porque lo ha dado a luz tu nuera, que te ama y es para ti mejor que siete hijos».
16 Noemí tomó al niño, lo puso en su regazo y se encargó de criarlo. 17 Las vecinas decían: «¡Noemí ha tenido un hijo!». Y lo llamaron Obed. Este fue el padre de Isaí, padre de David.

18 Así que este es el linaje de Fares:
Fares fue el padre de Jezrón;
19 Jezrón, el padre de Ram;
Ram, el padre de Aminadab;
20 Aminadab, el padre de Naasón;
Naasón, el padre de Salmón;[c]
21 Salmón, el padre de Booz;
Booz, el padre de Obed;
22 Obed, el padre de Isaí;
e Isaí, el padre de David.

4 Más tarde, Booz fue a sentarse a la entrada del pueblo, que era el lugar donde se reunía la gente. En aquel momento pasaba por allí el pariente del cual Booz había hablado.
—Oye —le dijo Booz—, ven acá y siéntate.
El pariente fue y se sentó. 2 En seguida Booz llamó a diez ancianos del pueblo, y también les pidió que se sentaran con él. Cuando ellos se sentaron, 3 Booz le dijo a su pariente:
—Noemí, que ha vuelto de Moab, está decidida a vender el terreno que perteneció a nuestro pariente Elimélec. 4 Quiero que lo sepas, para que, si te interesa comprarlo, lo hagas ahora delante de estos testigos y de los ancianos del pueblo. Como tú eres el pariente más cercano de Elimélec, tienes el derecho de comprar su tierra. Pero si tú no la compras, házmelo saber, pues después de ti yo soy quien tiene ese derecho.
El pariente contestó:
—La compro.
5 Entonces Booz le hizo esta aclaración:
—Ten en cuenta que si compras el terreno de Noemí, quedas también obligado a casarte con Rut, la viuda moabita, para que la propiedad siga a nombre del difunto.
6 Al oír esto, el pariente contestó:
—En ese caso no puedo hacer la compra, porque podría perjudicar mi herencia. Pero si tú quieres comprar, hazlo; yo te cedo mis derechos de compra.
7 En aquellos tiempos había en Israel una costumbre: cuando uno cedía a otro el derecho de parentesco, o cuando se cerraba un contrato de compra-venta, el que cedía o vendía se quitaba una sandalia y se la daba al otro. De acuerdo, pues, con esta costumbre, 8 el pariente de Booz se quitó la sandalia, se la dio a Booz y le dijo:
—Compra tú.
9 Entonces Booz dijo a los ancianos y a los allí presentes:
—Todos ustedes son hoy testigos de que le compro a Noemí las propiedades de Elimélec, Quilión y Mahlón. 10 También son testigos de que tomo por esposa a Rut, la viuda moabita, para que la propiedad se mantenga a nombre de Mahlón, su difunto esposo. Así no se borrará el nombre de Mahlón de entre los suyos, ni será olvidado en este pueblo. Hoy son ustedes testigos.
11 Los ancianos y todos los presentes contestaron:
—Sí, lo somos. ¡El Señor haga que la mujer que va a entrar en tu casa sea como Raquel y Lía, de quienes descendemos todos los israelitas! Y tú, sé un hombre ilustre en Efrata, un hombre notable en Belén. 12 Que el Señor te dé muchos hijos de esta mujer. Que tengas una familia numerosa, como la tuvo Fares, el hijo de Tamar y Judá.
13 Así fue como Booz se casó con Rut. Y se unió a ella, y el Señor permitió que quedara embarazada y que tuviera un hijo.
14 Entonces las mujeres decían a Noemí:
—¡Alabado sea el Señor, que te ha dado hoy un nieto para que cuide de ti! ¡Ojalá tu nieto sea famoso en Israel! 15 Él te dará ánimos y te sostendrá en tu vejez, porque es el hijo de tu nuera, la que tanto te quiere y que vale para ti más que siete hijos.
16 Noemí tomó al niño en su regazo y se encargó de criarlo. 17 Al verlo, las vecinas decían:
—¡Le ha nacido un hijo a Noemí!
Y le pusieron por nombre Obed. Éste fue el padre de Jesé y abuelo de David.

18 Éstos fueron los descendientes de Fares: Fares fue el padre de Hesrón, 19 Hesrón fue el padre de Ram, Ram fue el padre de Aminadab, 20 Aminadab fue el padre de Nahasón, Nahasón fue el padre de Salmón, 21 Salmón fue el padre de Booz, Booz fue el padre de Obed, 22 Obed fue el padre de Jesé, y Jesé fue el padre de David.

Boaz Marries Ruth
4 Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate(A) and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer[a](B) he had mentioned(C) came along. Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.
2 Boaz took ten of the elders(D) of the town and said, “Sit here,” and they did so.(E) 3 Then he said to the guardian-redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek.(F) 4 I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you[b] will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you,(G) and I am next in line.”
“I will redeem it,” he said.
5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite,(H) the[c] dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.”(I)
6 At this, the guardian-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem(J) it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.”(K)
7 (Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption(L) and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal(M) and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions(N) in Israel.)(O)
8 So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal.(P)
9 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses(Q) that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite,(R) Mahlon’s widow, as my wife,(S) in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown.(T) Today you are witnesses!(U)”
11 Then the elders and all the people at the gate(V) said, “We are witnesses.(W) May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah,(X) who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah(Y) and be famous in Bethlehem.(Z) 12 Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez,(AA) whom Tamar(AB) bore to Judah.”

13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive,(AC) and she gave birth to a son.(AD) 14 The women(AE) said to Naomi: “Praise be to the Lord,(AF) who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer.(AG) May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law,(AH) who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons,(AI) has given him birth.”
16 Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. 17 The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse,(AJ) the father of David.(AK)

2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.
3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's:
4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.
5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it.
7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.
9 And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.
10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:
12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman.
13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son.
14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.
17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,
19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,
20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,
21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
