31 Направих завет с очите си; И как бих погледнал на девица?
2 Защото какъв дял се определя от Бога отгоре, И какво наследство от Всемогъщия свише?
3 Не е ли разорение за нечестивия, И погибел за тия, които вършат беззаконие?
4 Не вижда ли Той пътищата ми? И не брои ли всичките ми стъпки?
5 Ако съм ходил с лъжата, И ногата ми е бързала на измама, -
6 (<Но> нека ме претеглят в прави везни, За да познае Бог непорочността ми, -)
7 Ако се е отклонила ногата ми от пътя, И сърцето ми е последвало очите ми, И ако се е залепило петно на ръцете ми,
8 То нека сея аз, а друг да яде, И нека се изкоренят произведенията ми
9 Ако се е прелъстило сърцето ми от жена, И съм причаквал при вратата на съседа си,
10 То нека моята жена меле за другиго, И други да се навеждат над нея;
11 Защото това би било гнусно дело, И беззаконие, което да се накаже от съдиите;
12 Понеже това е огън, който изгорява до погубване, И би изкоренил всичките ми плодове.
13 Ако съм презрял правото на слугата си или на слугинята си, Когато имаха спор с мене,
14 То какво бих сторил, когато се подигне Бог? И какво бих Му отговорил, когато посети?
15 Оня, който е образувал мене в утробата, не образува ли и него? И не същият ли ни образува в утробата?
16 Ако съм въздържал сиромасите от това, което желаеха, Или съм направил да помрачеят очите на вдовицата,
17 Или съм изял сам си залъка си, Без да е яло сирачето от него, -
18 (Напротив, от младостта ми то порасте при мене като при баща, И от утробата на майка си съм наставлявал вдовицата;)
19 Ако съм гледал някого да гине от нямане дрехи, Или сиромах, че няма завивка,
20 И не са ме благославяли чреслата му, Като се е стоплял с вълната от овцете ми;
21 Ако съм подигнал ръка против сирачето, Като виждах, че имам помощ в портата;
22 То да падне мишцата ми от рамото, И ръката ми да се пречупи от лакътя;
23 Защото погибел от Бога беше ужас за мене, И пред Неговото величие не можех да сторя нищо.
24 Ако съм турял надеждата си в злато, Или съм рекъл на чистото злато: Ти си мое упование;
25 Ако съм се веселил, защото богатството ми бе голямо, И защото ръката ми бе намерила изобилие;
26 Ако, като съм гледал слънцето, когато изгряваше, Или луната, когато ходеше в светлостта си,
27 Се е увлякло тайно сърцето ми, И устата ми са целували ръката ми;
28 И това би било беззаконие, което да се накаже от съдиите, Защото бих се отрекъл от вишния Бог.
29 Ако съм злорадствувал в загиването на мразещия ме, Или ми е ставало драго, когато го е сполетявало зло, -
30 (Даже не съм допуснал на устата си да съгрешат Та да искам живота му с проклетия); -
31 Ако хората от шатъра ми не са рекли: Кой може да покаже едного, който не е бил наситен от него с месо?
32 (Чужденецът не нощуваше вън; Отварях вратата си на пътника);
33 Ако съм покривал престъпленията си както Адама Като съм скривал беззаконието си в пазухата си,
34 Понеже се боях от голямото множество, И презрението на семействата ме ужасяваше, Така че млъквах и не излизах из вратата; -
35 (О, да имаше някой да ме слуша! - Ето <виж> тука подписа ми; Всемогъщият нека ми отговори! - И <да имах акта> {Еврейски: Книга.} който противникът ми е написал!
36 Ето, на рамо щях да го нося, За венец щях да го привържа на себе си!
37 Щях да му дам отчет за стъпките си; Като княз щях да <се> приближа при него-);
38 Ако нивата ми вика против мене, И браздите й плачат заедно;
39 Ако съм изял плода й без да платя, Или съм изгасил живота на стопаните й;
40 Тогава да израстат тръни вместо жито, И вместо ечемик плевели. Свършиха се думите на Иова.

31 (A)„Договор сключих с очите си да не поглеждам девица. 2 Но каква ми е участта от Бога свише и какво е наследството ми от Всемогъщия от висините? 3 Бедствието не е ли за нечестив човека и злото не е ли за злосторника? 4 Бог не видя ли моите пътища и не изброи ли моите стъпки?
5 Ако съм постъпвал с лъжа и ако моят крак е бързал към измама, 6 нека ме претеглят на точни везни и Бог ще установи моята невинност. 7 Ако стъпките ми са се отклонявали от пътя и ако сърцето ми е следвало очите ми, и по дланите ми се е залепило петно, 8 нека сея, а друг да яде и нека потомците ми да бъдат изкоренени.
9 (B)Ако сърцето ми се е прелъстявало от жена и ако съм дебнел при вратата на ближния си, 10 нека жена ми да мели за друг и нека други да се надвесват над нея, 11 защото това е безчестие и е беззаконие, което се наказва от съд; 12 защото е огън, който изяжда до преизподнята и би изгорил всичко, което ми принадлежи.
13 Ако не зачитах правата на слугата си и на слугинята си, когато са имали спор с мене, 14 какво щях да правя, ако Бог би се надигнал срещу мене, и ако Той би ме наказал, какво можех да Му отговоря? 15 (C)Нали Този, Който ме е създал в утробата на майка ми, Същият е създал всички ни в майчина утроба?
16 Отказвал ли съм да изпълня просбата на бедни и оставях ли очите на вдовица да линеят? 17 Самичък ли съм изяждал своя залък и не е ли ял от него и сирак? 18 Защото от младини е расъл той с мене като с баща и от утробата на майка си съм го водел. 19 Ако виждах някой загубен без дреха и осиромашал без връхна дреха, 20 не ме ли е благославяло неговото потомство и не е ли бил стоплян с вълна от моите агнета? 21 Ако съм издигал ръката си срещу сирак, понеже съм видял подкрепа при портите, 22 нека рамото ми се отдели от гърба и нека горната част на ръката ми се откъсне от лакътя, 23 тъй като наказанието от Бога ме плаши: пред Неговото величие не бих устоял.
24 (D)Взимал ли съм златото за своя опора и казвал ли съм на чисто злато: ‘Ти си мое упование?’ 25 Ако съм се радвал, че богатството ми беше голямо и че моята ръка толкова много е спечелила, 26 (E)ако гледах слънцето как блести и луната как величествено върви, 27 прелъстих ли се тайно в сърцето си и поднесе ли се ръката ми на устата ми за целувка – 28 това щеше да е също престъпление за наказване от съдия, защото бих се отрекъл от Бога във висините.
29 (F)Радвах ли се за гибелта на врага си и тържествувах ли, когато го постигаше нещастие? 30 Не, аз не позволявах на своята уста да съгреши, с проклятие да търси гибелта на неговия живот. 31 Не казваха ли хората от шатрата ми: ‘Кой ли не се е насищал от неговите месни гозби?’ 32 Чужд човек не нощуваше на улицата, вратата ми беше отворена за всеки пътник. 33 Ако бях скривал като човек своите простъпки, бях прикривал в гърдите си своята вина, 34 понеже съм се боял от голямото множество, плашел съм се от подигравката на роднините, тогава щях да си мълча и не щях да излизам вън от вратата. 35 Ах, би ли имало някой, който да ме чуе! Това е моята последна дума: нека Всемогъщият да ми отговори! И нека този, с когото споря, напише отговора на свитък. 36 Наистина, бих искал да го нося на рамо, да го навия като венец на главата си. 37 Щях да известя на Бога броя на крачките си, щях да се приближа без страх до Него като към княз.
38 Ако нивите ми са викали срещу мене и браздите им са се оплаквали от мене, 39 ако безплатно съм ял добива им и бях причинявал грижи на стопаните, 40 нека вместо жито да растат бодили и вместо ечемик – бурени.“

31 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?
2 For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
4 Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?
5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
6 Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.
7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;
10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;
14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;
18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)
19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
25 If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;
26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
29 If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.
36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;
39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

2 For what is our lot(C) from God above,
our heritage from the Almighty on high?(D)
3 Is it not ruin(E) for the wicked,
disaster(F) for those who do wrong?(G)
4 Does he not see my ways(H)
and count my every step?(I)
5 “If I have walked with falsehood
or my foot has hurried after deceit(J)—
6 let God weigh me(K) in honest scales(L)
and he will know that I am blameless(M)—
7 if my steps have turned from the path,(N)
if my heart has been led by my eyes,
or if my hands(O) have been defiled,(P)
8 then may others eat what I have sown,(Q)
and may my crops be uprooted.(R)
9 “If my heart has been enticed(S) by a woman,(T)
or if I have lurked at my neighbor’s door,
10 then may my wife grind(U) another man’s grain,
and may other men sleep with her.(V)
11 For that would have been wicked,(W)
a sin to be judged.(X)

whether male or female,

16 “If I have denied the desires of the poor(AH)
or let the eyes of the widow(AI) grow weary,(AJ)
17 if I have kept my bread to myself,

18 but from my youth I reared them as a father would,
and from my birth I guided the widow(AL)—
19 if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing,(AM)
or the needy(AN) without garments,
20 and their hearts did not bless me(AO)
for warming them with the fleece(AP) from my sheep,
21 if I have raised my hand against the fatherless,(AQ)
knowing that I had influence in court,(AR)
22 then let my arm fall from the shoulder,
let it be broken off at the joint.(AS)
23 For I dreaded destruction from God,(AT)
and for fear of his splendor(AU) I could not do such things.(AV)
24 “If I have put my trust in gold(AW)
or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security,’(AX)
25 if I have rejoiced over my great wealth,(AY)
the fortune my hands had gained,(AZ)
26 if I have regarded the sun(BA) in its radiance
or the moon(BB) moving in splendor,
27 so that my heart was secretly enticed(BC)
and my hand offered them a kiss of homage,(BD)

31 if those of my household have never said,

32 but no stranger had to spend the night in the street,
for my door was always open to the traveler(BK)—
33 if I have concealed(BL) my sin as people do,[b]
by hiding(BM) my guilt in my heart
34 because I so feared the crowd(BN)
and so dreaded the contempt of the clans
that I kept silent(BO) and would not go outside—
35 (“Oh, that I had someone to hear me!(BP)
I sign now my defense—let the Almighty answer me;
let my accuser(BQ) put his indictment in writing.

31 “I have made a covenant with my eyes;

2 For what is the (B)allotment of God from above,
And the inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
3 Is it not destruction for the wicked,
And disaster for the workers of iniquity?
4 (C)Does He not see my ways,
And count all my steps?

That God may know my (D)integrity.
7 If my step has turned from the way,
