16 И было ко мне слово Господне:
2 сын человеческий! выскажи Иерусалиму мерзости его
3 и скажи: так говорит Господь Бог [дщери] Иерусалима: твой корень и твоя родина в земле Ханаанской; отец твой Аморрей, и мать твоя Хеттеянка;
4 при рождении твоем, в день, когда ты родилась, пупа твоего не отрезали, и водою ты не была омыта для очищения, и солью не была осолена, и пеленами не повита.
5 Ничей глаз не сжалился над тобою, чтобы из милости к тебе сделать тебе что-нибудь из этого; но ты выброшена была на поле, по презрению к жизни твоей, в день рождения твоего.
6 И проходил Я мимо тебя, и увидел тебя, брошенную на попрание в кровях твоих, и сказал тебе: 'в кровях твоих живи!' Так, Я сказал тебе: 'в кровях твоих живи!'
7 Умножил тебя как полевые растения; ты выросла и стала большая, и достигла превосходной красоты: поднялись груди, и волоса у тебя выросли; но ты была нага и непокрыта.
8 И проходил Я мимо тебя, и увидел тебя, и вот, это было время твое, время любви; и простер Я воскрилия [риз] Моих на тебя, и покрыл наготу твою; и поклялся тебе и вступил в союз с тобою, говорит Господь Бог, --и ты стала Моею.
9 Омыл Я тебя водою и смыл с тебя кровь твою и помазал тебя елеем.
10 И надел на тебя узорчатое платье, и обул тебя в сафьяные сандалии, и опоясал тебя виссоном, и покрыл тебя шелковым покрывалом.
11 И нарядил тебя в наряды, и положил на руки твои запястья и на шею твою ожерелье.
12 И дал тебе кольцо на твой нос и серьги к ушам твоим и на голову твою прекрасный венец.
13 Так украшалась ты золотом и серебром, и одежда твоя [была] виссон и шелк и узорчатые ткани; питалась ты хлебом из лучшей пшеничной муки, медом и елеем, и была чрезвычайно красива, и достигла царственного величия.
14 И пронеслась по народам слава твоя ради красоты твоей, потому что она была вполне совершенна при том великолепном наряде, который Я возложил на тебя, говорит Господь Бог.
15 Но ты понадеялась на красоту твою, и, пользуясь славою твоею, стала блудить и расточала блудодейство твое на всякого мимоходящего, отдаваясь ему.
16 И взяла из одежд твоих, и сделала себе разноцветные высоты, и блудодействовала на них, как никогда не случится и не будет.
17 И взяла нарядные твои вещи из Моего золота и из Моего серебра, которые Я дал тебе, и сделала себе мужские изображения, и блудодействовала с ними.
18 И взяла узорчатые платья твои, и одела их ими, и ставила перед ними елей Мой и фимиам Мой,
19 и хлеб Мой, который Я давал тебе, пшеничную муку, и елей, и мед, которыми Я питал тебя, ты поставляла перед ними в приятное благовоние; и это было, говорит Господь Бог.
20 И взяла сыновей твоих и дочерей твоих, которых ты родила Мне, и приносила в жертву на снедение им. Мало ли тебе было блудодействовать?
21 Но ты и сыновей Моих заколала и отдавала им, проводя их [через] [огонь].
22 И при всех твоих мерзостях и блудодеяниях твоих ты не вспомнила о днях юности твоей, когда ты была нага и непокрыта и брошена в крови твоей на попрание.
23 И после всех злодеяний твоих, --горе, горе тебе! говорит Господь Бог, --
24 ты построила себе блудилища и наделала себе возвышений на всякой площади;
25 при начале всякой дороги устроила себе возвышения, позорила красоту твою и раскидывала ноги твои для всякого мимоходящего, и умножила блудодеяния твои.
26 Блудила с сыновьями Египта, соседями твоими, людьми великорослыми, и умножала блудодеяния твои, прогневляя Меня.
27 И вот, Я простер на тебя руку Мою, и уменьшил назначенное тебе, и отдал тебя на произвол ненавидящим тебя дочерям Филистимским, которые устыдились срамного поведения твоего.
28 И блудила ты с сынами Ассура и не насытилась; блудила с ними, но тем не удовольствовалась;
29 и умножила блудодеяния твои в земле Ханаанской до Халдеи, но и тем не удовольствовалась.
30 Как истомлено должно быть сердце твое, говорит Господь Бог, когда ты все это делала, как необузданная блудница!
31 Когда ты строила себе блудилища при начале всякой дороги и делала себе возвышения на всякой площади, ты была не как блудница, потому что отвергала подарки,
32 но как прелюбодейная жена, принимающая вместо своего мужа чужих.
33 Всем блудницам дают подарки, а ты сама давала подарки всем любовникам твоим и подкупала их, чтобы они со всех сторон приходили к тебе блудить с тобою.
34 У тебя в блудодеяниях твоих было противное тому, что бывает с женщинами: не за тобою гонялись, но ты давала подарки, а тебе не давали подарков; и потому ты поступала в противность другим.
35 Посему выслушай, блудница, слово Господне!
36 Так говорит Господь Бог: за то, что ты так сыпала деньги твои, и в блудодеяниях твоих раскрываема была нагота твоя перед любовниками твоими и перед всеми мерзкими идолами твоими, и за кровь сыновей твоих, которых ты отдавала им, --
37 за то вот, Я соберу всех любовников твоих, которыми ты услаждалась и которых ты любила, со всеми теми, которых ненавидела, и соберу их отовсюду против тебя, и раскрою перед ними наготу твою, и увидят весь срам твой.
38 Я буду судить тебя судом прелюбодейц и проливающих кровь, --и предам тебя кровавой ярости и ревности;
39 предам тебя в руки их и они разорят блудилища твои, и раскидают возвышения твои, и сорвут с тебя одежды твои, и возьмут наряды твои, и оставят тебя нагою и непокрытою.
40 И созовут на тебя собрание, и побьют тебя камнями, и разрубят тебя мечами своими.
41 Сожгут домы твои огнем и совершат над тобою суд перед глазами многих жен; и положу конец блуду твоему, и не будешь уже давать подарков.
42 И утолю над тобою гнев Мой, и отступит от тебя негодование Мое, и успокоюсь, и уже не буду гневаться.
43 За то, что ты не вспомнила о днях юности твоей и всем этим раздражала Меня, вот, и Я поведение твое обращу на [твою] голову, говорит Господь Бог, чтобы ты не предавалась более разврату после всех твоих мерзостей.
44 Вот, всякий, кто говорит притчами, может сказать о тебе: 'какова мать, такова и дочь'.
45 Ты дочь в мать твою, которая бросила мужа своего и детей своих, --и ты сестра в сестер твоих, которые бросили мужей своих и детей своих. Мать ваша Хеттеянка, и отец ваш Аморрей.
46 Большая же сестра твоя--Самария, с дочерями своими живущая влево от тебя; а меньшая сестра твоя, живущая от тебя вправо, есть Содома с дочерями ее.
47 Но ты и не их путями ходила и не по их мерзостям поступала; этого было мало: ты поступала развратнее их на всех путях твоих.
48 Живу Я, говорит Господь Бог; Содома, сестра твоя, не делала того сама и ее дочери, что делала ты и дочери твои.
49 Вот в чем было беззаконие Содомы, сестры твоей и дочерей ее: в гордости, пресыщении и праздности, и она руки бедного и нищего не поддерживала.
50 И возгордились они, и делали мерзости пред лицем Моим, и, увидев это, Я отверг их.
51 И Самария половины грехов твоих не нагрешила; ты превзошла их мерзостями твоими, и через твои мерзости, какие делала ты, сестры твои оказались правее тебя.
52 Неси же посрамление твое и ты, которая осуждала сестер твоих; по грехам твоим, какими ты опозорила себя более их, они правее тебя. Красней же от стыда и ты, и неси посрамление твое, так оправдав сестер твоих.
53 Но Я возвращу плен их, плен Содомы и дочерей ее, плен Самарии и дочерей ее, и между ними плен плененных твоих,
54 дабы ты несла посрамление твое и стыдилась всего того, что делала, служа для них утешением.
55 И сестры твои, Содома и дочери ее, возвратятся в прежнее состояние свое; и Самария и дочери ее возвратятся в прежнее состояние свое, и ты и дочери твои возвратитесь в прежнее состояние ваше.
56 О сестре твоей Содоме и помина не было в устах твоих во дни гордыни твоей,
57 доколе еще не открыто было нечестие твое, как во время посрамления от дочерей Сирии и всех окружавших ее, от дочерей Филистимы, смотревших на тебя с презрением со всех сторон.
58 За разврат твой и за мерзости твои терпишь ты, говорит Господь.
59 Ибо так говорит Господь Бог: Я поступлю с тобою, как поступила ты, презрев клятву нарушением союза.
60 Но Я вспомню союз Мой с тобою во дни юности твоей, и восстановлю с тобою вечный союз.
61 И ты вспомнишь о путях твоих, и будет стыдно тебе, когда станешь принимать к себе сестер твоих, больших тебя, как и меньших тебя, и когда Я буду давать тебе их в дочерей, но не от твоего союза.
62 Я восстановлю союз Мой с тобою, и узнаешь, что Я Господь,
63 для того, чтобы ты помнила и стыдилась, и чтобы вперед нельзя было тебе и рта открыть от стыда, когда Я прощу тебе все, что ты делала, говорит Господь Бог.

16 Было ко мне слово Господа:
2 – Сын человеческий, укажи Иерусалиму на его омерзительные дела 3 и скажи: Так говорит Иерусалиму Владыка Господь: «Твои корни и кровные узы[b] – в земле Ханаана; твой отец был аморрей, а мать хеттеянка. 4 В день, когда ты родилась, твоя пуповина не была перерезана, тебя не вымыли водой, не вытерли солью, чтобы очистить, и не завернули в пеленки. 5 Никто не глянул на тебя с жалостью, чтобы, из сострадания к тебе, сделать что-нибудь из этого. Нет, тебя бросили в открытом поле, потому что в день, когда ты родилась, тебя гнушались.
6 Я проходил мимо и увидел, как ты бьешься в крови, и сказал тебе, лежащей в крови: „Живи!“ Да, Я сказал тебе в крови: „Живи!“ 7 Я взрастил тебя, как растение в поле. Ты выросла, стала высокой и достигла превосходной красоты; у тебя поднялись груди и выросли волосы, но ты оставалась нагой и непокрытой.
8 Я снова проходил мимо и посмотрел на тебя: ты достигла возраста любви. Я простер над тобой край одежды и покрыл твою наготу. Я поклялся тебе и заключил с тобой брачный союз, – возвещает Владыка Господь, – и ты стала Моей.
9 Я омыл тебя водой, смыл с тебя кровь и помазал тебя благовонным маслом. 10 Я одел тебя в расшитое платье и обул в сандалии из дюгоневой кожи; Я облек тебя в тонкий лен и покрыл драгоценным шелком. 11 Я украсил тебя драгоценностями: надел браслеты тебе на запястья, ожерелье на шею, 12 вдел в нос кольцо, в уши – серьги, а на голову возложил прекрасный венец. 13 Ты украсилась золотом и серебром, а одежды твои были из тонкого льна, драгоценного шелка и расшитой ткани. Ты питалась лучшей мукой, медом и оливковым маслом. Ты была замечательно красива, ты стала царицей. 14 Слава о твоей красоте разошлась среди народов, ведь она была совершенной ради Моего великолепия, которым Я тебя наделил, – возвещает Владыка Господь.
15 Но ты понадеялась на свою красоту и, пользуясь славой, стала блудницей. Ты отдавалась всякому, кто проходил мимо. 16 Ты взяла часть своих одежд, чтобы сделать разноцветные святилища на возвышенностях, и распутничала там; никогда не бывало подобного этому, и впредь не будет[c]. 17 Ты взяла прекрасные драгоценности, которые Я тебе дал, драгоценности из Моего золота и серебра, сделала себе мужские изображения и распутничала с ними. 18 Ты взяла свои расшитые одежды, чтобы одеть их в них, и ставила перед ними Мое оливковое масло и благовония. 19 И пищу, что Я дал тебе, лучшую муку, оливковое масло и мед, которыми Я кормил тебя, – ты приносила своим идолам как отрадное благоухание. Вот как все было, – возвещает Владыка Господь.
20 Ты брала своих сыновей и дочерей, которых родила Мне, и приносила их в жертву, на съедение идолам[d]. Разве не достаточно было твоего распутства? 21 Ты убивала Моих детей и приносила их в огненную жертву идолам. 22 При своих омерзительных обычаях и распутстве ты не вспоминала о днях своей юности, когда ты, нагая, непокрытая, билась в крови.
23 Горе! Горе тебе, – возвещает Владыка Господь. – После всех твоих прочих злодейств 24 ты сделала у себя насыпь и на каждой площади построила святилища на возвышенностях. 25 В начале каждой улицы ты построила святилища на возвышенностях и бесчестила свою красоту, раздвигая свои ноги для всякого прохожего и становясь все более распутной. 26 Ты распутничала с египтянами[e], твоими похотливыми соседями, и вызывала Мой гнев, становясь все более распутной. 27 И вот, Я поднял на тебя руку и уменьшил определенную тебе землю; Я предал тебя в распоряжение твоих врагов, дочерей филистимских, которые устыдились твоего непристойного поведения. 28 Ты распутничала и с ассирийцами, потому что была ненасытна, и все-таки не утолила своей похоти. 29 Ты умножала свое распутство и с Халдеей, землей купцов, но и тогда не познала утоления.
30 Как истомилось твое сердце, – возвещает Владыка Господь, – когда ты все это делала, поступая как бесстыдная блудница! 31 Когда ты делала насыпи в начале каждой улицы и строила святилища[f] на каждой площади, ты не была похожа на блудницу, потому что отвергала плату.
32 Ты – жена-изменница! Ты предпочитаешь мужу чужаков! 33 Любая блудница берет плату, а ты сама делала подарки любовникам, подкупая их, чтобы они приходили отовсюду переспать с тобой. 34 В распутстве своем ты была непохожа на других женщин: никто не выпрашивал у тебя ласк; ты сама давала плату, а тебе никто не платил; этим ты была непохожа на них.
35 Поэтому, блудница, слушай слово Господа! 36 Так говорит Владыка Господь: За то, что ты была похотлива и открывала свою наготу, предаваясь распутству с любовниками, за твоих омерзительных идолов, и за то, что ты давала им кровь своих детей, 37 Я соберу твоих любовников, с которыми ты наслаждалась, тех, кого ты любила, вместе с теми, кого ты ненавидела. Я соберу их против тебя отовсюду, обнажу тебя перед ними, и они увидят твою наготу. 38 Я определю тебе наказание, как женщинам, которые изменяют и проливают кровь; в ярости и ревнивом гневе Я приговорю тебя к кровавой смерти. 39 Я отдам тебя твоим любовникам, и они уничтожат твои насыпи и разрушат святилища на возвышенностях. Они сорвут с тебя одежды и отнимут твои прекрасные драгоценности, оставив тебя обнаженной и непокрытой. 40 Они соберут против тебя толпу, которая побьет тебя камнями и рассечет на куски мечами. 41 Они сожгут дотла твои дома и исполнят над тобой приговор на глазах у многих женщин. Я положу конец твоему распутству, и ты не будешь больше платить любовникам. 42 После этого Моя ярость против тебя утихнет, и ревнивый гнев отвратится от тебя; Я успокоюсь и больше не буду гневаться.
43 Так как ты не вспоминала о днях своей юности, но вызывала Мой гнев всем этим, Я непременно обрушу тебе на голову то, что ты наделала, – возвещает Владыка Господь. – Разве ты не прибавила разврата к прочим твоим мерзостям?
44 Вот, всякий, кто говорит притчами, скажет о тебе такую: „Какова мать, такова и дочь“. 45 Ты настоящая дочь своей матери, которая отвергла мужа и детей; ты настоящая сестра своих сестер, которые отвергли мужей и детей. Твоя мать была хеттеянка, а отец – аморрей. 46 Твоя старшая сестра – Самария, которая жила к северу от тебя со своими дочерьми; а твоя младшая сестра – Содом, жившая со своими дочерьми к югу от тебя. 47 Ты не только шла по их путям и перенимала их омерзительные обычаи, но во всех своих путях ты скоро превзошла всех их. 48 Верно, как и то, что Я живу, – возвещает Владыка Господь, – твоя сестра Содом и ее дочери не творили того, что творила ты и твои дочери.
49 Вот в чем был грех Содома твоей сестры: она и ее дочери были надменны, пресыщены и равнодушны; они не помогали нищему и бедняку. 50 Они были высокомерны и творили предо Мной омерзительные дела. Поэтому Я погубил их, увидев это. 51 Самария не совершила и половины твоих грехов. Ты превзошла их мерзостями, и по сравнению с тем, что ты натворила, твои сестры кажутся праведными. 52 Неси свой позор, ведь ты предоставила некоторое оправдание для сестер. Так как твои грехи были отвратительнее их грехов, они кажутся праведнее тебя. Красней от стыда и неси свой позор, ведь рядом с тобой сестры кажутся праведными.
53 Но Я верну благополучие Содому и ее дочерям, а также Самарии и ее дочерям, и вместе с ними верну благополучие тебе, 54 чтобы тебе нести свой позор и краснеть от стыда за все, что ты натворила, служа для них утешением. 55 А твои сестры, Содом со своими дочерьми и Самария с дочерьми ее, вернутся в свое прежнее состояние, и ты со своими дочерьми вернешься в свое прежнее состояние. 56 Разве твоя сестра Содом не была притчей у тебя на устах в день твоей гордости, 57 до того, как раскрылось твое бесчестие? А теперь ты являешься посмешищем для дочерей Арама[g] и всех их соседей и для дочерей филистимских – всех вокруг, кто презирает тебя. 58 Неси наказание за свой разврат и свои мерзости, – возвещает Господь. –
59 Так говорит Владыка Господь: Я поступлю с тобой так, как ты заслуживаешь, потому что ты пренебрегла Моей клятвой, нарушив завет. 60 И все-таки Я вспомню тот завет, который Я заключил с тобой в дни твоей юности, и установлю с тобою вечный завет. 61 Тогда ты вспомнишь свои пути и устыдишься, когда ты станешь принимать к себе своих сестер, и старших, и младших, и Я дам их тебе как дочерей, но не из-за Моего завета с тобой. 62 Я восстановлю Свой завет с тобой, и ты узнаешь, что Я – Господь, 63 чтобы, когда Я прощу тебе все, что ты натворила, ты помнила и краснела от стыда, и чтобы впредь ты рта не могла раскрыть от позора, возвещает Владыка Господь».

16 Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord God unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.
4 And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all.
5 None eye pitied thee, to do any of these unto thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field, to the lothing of thy person, in the day that thou wast born.
6 And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.
7 I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the field, and thou hast increased and waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare.
8 Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord God, and thou becamest mine.
9 Then washed I thee with water; yea, I throughly washed away thy blood from thee, and I anointed thee with oil.
10 I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers' skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk.
11 I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.
12 And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head.
13 Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom.
14 And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord God.
15 But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.
16 And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so.
17 Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them,
18 And tookest thy broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast set mine oil and mine incense before them.
19 My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey, wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord God.
20 Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,
21 That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?
22 And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, and wast polluted in thy blood.
23 And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, (woe, woe unto thee! saith the Lord God;)
24 That thou hast also built unto thee an eminent place, and hast made thee an high place in every street.
25 Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms.
26 Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger.
27 Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished thine ordinary food, and delivered thee unto the will of them that hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are ashamed of thy lewd way.
28 Thou hast played the whore also with the Assyrians, because thou wast unsatiable; yea, thou hast played the harlot with them, and yet couldest not be satisfied.
29 Thou hast moreover multiplied thy fornication in the land of Canaan unto Chaldea; and yet thou wast not satisfied therewith.
30 How weak is thine heart, saith the Lord God, seeing thou doest all these things, the work of an imperious whorish woman;
31 In that thou buildest thine eminent place in the head of every way, and makest thine high place in every street; and hast not been as an harlot, in that thou scornest hire;
32 But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband!
33 They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy whoredom.
34 And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.
35 Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord:
36 Thus saith the Lord God; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them;
37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.
38 And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy.
39 And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.
40 They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords.
41 And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more.
42 So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry.
43 Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head, saith the Lord God: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations.
44 Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.
45 Thou art thy mother's daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.
46 And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.
47 Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.
48 As I live, saith the Lord God, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters.
49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.
51 Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done.
52 Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.
53 When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them:
54 That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them.
55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.
56 For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride,
57 Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, which despise thee round about.
58 Thou hast borne thy lewdness and thine abominations, saith the Lord.
59 For thus saith the Lord God; I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast despised the oath in breaking the covenant.
60 Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant.
61 Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant.
62 And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord:
63 That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord God.

Jerusalem as an Adulterous Wife
16 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, confront(A) Jerusalem with her detestable practices(B) 3 and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry(C) and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father(D) was an Amorite(E) and your mother a Hittite.(F) 4 On the day you were born(G) your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. 5 No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.
6 “‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!”[a](H) 7 I made you grow(I) like a plant of the field. You grew and developed and entered puberty. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, yet you were stark naked.(J)
8 “‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment(K) over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant(L) with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.(M)
9 “‘I bathed you with water and washed(N) the blood from you and put ointments on you. 10 I clothed you with an embroidered(O) dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen(P) and covered you with costly garments.(Q) 11 I adorned you with jewelry:(R) I put bracelets(S) on your arms and a necklace(T) around your neck, 12 and I put a ring on your nose,(U) earrings(V) on your ears and a beautiful crown(W) on your head.(X) 13 So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes(Y) were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was honey, olive oil(Z) and the finest flour. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen.(AA) 14 And your fame(AB) spread among the nations on account of your beauty,(AC) because the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AD)
15 “‘But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by(AE) and your beauty became his.(AF) 16 You took some of your garments to make gaudy high places,(AG) where you carried on your prostitution.(AH) You went to him, and he possessed your beauty.[b] 17 You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them.(AI) 18 And you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense(AJ) before them. 19 Also the food I provided for you—the flour, olive oil and honey I gave you to eat—you offered as fragrant incense before them. That is what happened, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AK)
20 “‘And you took your sons and daughters(AL) whom you bore to me(AM) and sacrificed them as food to the idols. Was your prostitution not enough?(AN) 21 You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols.(AO) 22 In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth,(AP) when you were naked and bare,(AQ) kicking about in your blood.(AR)
23 “‘Woe!(AS) Woe to you, declares the Sovereign Lord. In addition to all your other wickedness, 24 you built a mound for yourself and made a lofty shrine(AT) in every public square.(AU) 25 At every street corner(AV) you built your lofty shrines and degraded your beauty, spreading your legs with increasing promiscuity to anyone who passed by.(AW) 26 You engaged in prostitution(AX) with the Egyptians,(AY) your neighbors with large genitals, and aroused my anger(AZ) with your increasing promiscuity.(BA) 27 So I stretched out my hand(BB) against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over(BC) to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines,(BD) who were shocked by your lewd conduct. 28 You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians(BE) too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you still were not satisfied.(BF) 29 Then you increased your promiscuity to include Babylonia,[c](BG) a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.(BH)
30 “‘I am filled with fury against you,[d] declares the Sovereign Lord, when you do all these things, acting like a brazen prostitute!(BI) 31 When you built your mounds at every street corner and made your lofty shrines(BJ) in every public square, you were unlike a prostitute, because you scorned payment.
32 “‘You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! 33 All prostitutes receive gifts,(BK) but you give gifts(BL) to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for your illicit favors.(BM) 34 So in your prostitution you are the opposite of others; no one runs after you for your favors. You are the very opposite, for you give payment and none is given to you.
35 “‘Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord! 36 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you poured out your lust and exposed your naked body in your promiscuity with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because you gave them your children’s blood,(BN) 37 therefore I am going to gather all your lovers, with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and will strip(BO) you in front of them, and they will see you stark naked.(BP) 38 I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and who shed blood;(BQ) I will bring on you the blood vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger.(BR) 39 Then I will deliver you into the hands(BS) of your lovers, and they will tear down your mounds and destroy your lofty shrines. They will strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry and leave you stark naked.(BT) 40 They will bring a mob against you, who will stone(BU) you and hack you to pieces with their swords. 41 They will burn down(BV) your houses and inflict punishment on you in the sight of many women.(BW) I will put a stop(BX) to your prostitution, and you will no longer pay your lovers. 42 Then my wrath against you will subside and my jealous anger will turn away from you; I will be calm and no longer angry.(BY)
43 “‘Because you did not remember(BZ) the days of your youth but enraged me with all these things, I will surely bring down(CA) on your head what you have done, declares the Sovereign Lord. Did you not add lewdness to all your other detestable practices?(CB)
44 “‘Everyone who quotes proverbs(CC) will quote this proverb about you: “Like mother, like daughter.” 45 You are a true daughter of your mother, who despised(CD) her husband(CE) and her children; and you are a true sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.(CF) 46 Your older sister(CG) was Samaria, who lived to the north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you with her daughters, was Sodom.(CH) 47 You not only followed their ways and copied their detestable practices, but in all your ways you soon became more depraved than they.(CI) 48 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign(CJ) Lord, your sister Sodom(CK) and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done.(CL)
49 “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom:(CM) She and her daughters were arrogant,(CN) overfed and unconcerned;(CO) they did not help the poor and needy.(CP) 50 They were haughty(CQ) and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.(CR) 51 Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have done more detestable things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous by all these things you have done.(CS) 52 Bear your disgrace, for you have furnished some justification for your sisters. Because your sins were more vile than theirs, they appear more righteous(CT) than you. So then, be ashamed and bear(CU) your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.
53 “‘However, I will restore(CV) the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and of Samaria and her daughters, and your fortunes along with them,(CW) 54 so that you may bear your disgrace(CX) and be ashamed of all you have done in giving them comfort. 55 And your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to what they were before; and you and your daughters will return to what you were before.(CY) 56 You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride, 57 before your wickedness was uncovered. Even so, you are now scorned(CZ) by the daughters of Edom[e](DA) and all her neighbors and the daughters of the Philistines—all those around you who despise you. 58 You will bear the consequences of your lewdness and your detestable practices, declares the Lord.(DB)
59 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have despised my oath by breaking the covenant.(DC) 60 Yet I will remember the covenant(DD) I made with you in the days of your youth,(DE) and I will establish an everlasting covenant(DF) with you. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed(DG) when you receive your sisters, both those who are older than you and those who are younger. I will give them to you as daughters,(DH) but not on the basis of my covenant with you. 62 So I will establish my covenant(DI) with you, and you will know that I am the Lord.(DJ) 63 Then, when I make atonement(DK) for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed(DL) and never again open your mouth(DM) because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign Lord.(DN)’”
