1 ^(A)Това са думите, що говори Моисей на всички израилтяни отсам Иордан в пустинята, на равнината срещу Суф, между Фаран и Тофел, Лаван, Асирот и Дизагав;

²^(B)а от Хорив, по пътя от планина Сеир, до Кадес-Варни има само единайсет дена път.

³На четирийсетата година, на единайсетия месец, в първия (ден) на месеца говори Моисей на (всички) синове Израилеви всичко, що му бе заповядал Господ за тях.

⁴^(C)След като порази аморейския цар Сихона, който живееше в Есевон, и васанския цар Ога, който живееше в Ащерот, в Едрея,

⁵отсам Иордан, в земята Моавска, Моисей почна да обяснява тоя закон и каза:

⁶^(D)Господ, Бог наш, ни говори на Хорив и каза: доста сте живели в тая планина;

⁷^(E)обърнете се, тръгнете на път и идете към планината на аморейци и при всички техни съседи, по равнината, по планината, по низините и на юг и към бреговете морски, в земята Ханаанска, и към Ливан, дори до голямата река, река Ефрат;

⁸^(F)ето, давам ви тая земя, вървете, вземете в наследство земята, що Господ с клетва бе обещал да даде на отците ви Авраама, Исаака и Иакова, тям и на потомството им.

⁹^(G)И аз ви казах в онова време: не мога сам да ви водя;

¹⁰^(H)Господ, Бог ваш, ви размножи, и ето, вие сте сега многобройни като звездите небесни;

¹¹Господ, Бог на отците ви, нека ви умножи хиляди пъти повече, отколкото сте сега, и нека ви благослови, както ви бе говорил!

¹²Как ще нося сам теглилата ви, бремената ви и разприте ви?

¹³Изберете си според вашите колена мъже мъдри, разумни и изпитани, и аз ще ви ги поставя за началници.

¹⁴Вие ми отговорихте тогава и рекохте: добро нещо казваш да направим.

¹⁵^(I)И взех първенците от вашите колена, мъже мъдри (разумни) и изпитани, и ги поставих за началници над вас: хилядоначалници, стоначалници, петдесетоначалници, десетоначалници и надзиратели, според вашите колена.

¹⁶^(J)И дадох заповед на съдиите ви в онова време, като казах: изслушвайте братята си и съдете справедливо както брата с брат, тъй и неговия чужденец;

¹⁷^(K)в съда не правете разлика между лицата, изслушвайте и малък, и голям: не бойте се от лице човешко, понеже съдът е дело Божие; а дело, което е мъчно за вас, отнасяйте до мене, и аз ще го изслушвам.

¹⁸И в онова време дадох ви заповед за всичко, що трябва да вършите.

¹⁹^(L)И тръгнахме от Хорив, и вървяхме по цялата тая велика и страшна пустиня, която видяхме, по пътя за Аморейската планина, както бе заповядал Господ, Бог наш, и пристигнахме в Кадес-Варни.

²⁰Тогава аз ви казах: вие пристигнахте при Аморейската планина, която Господ, Бог наш, ни дава;

²¹^(M)ето, Господ, Бог твой, ти дава тая земя, върви, вземи я във владение, както ти бе говорил Господ, Бог на твоите отци, не бой се и не се страхувай.

²²^(N)Но вие всички дойдохте при мене и казахте: нека изпратим пред нас люде, да ни обгледат земята и да ни донесат известие за пътя, по който ще вървим, и за градовете, в които ще отидем.

²³^(O)Допаднаха ми тия думи, и аз взех измежду вас дванайсет души, по един човек от (всяко) коляно.

²⁴^(P)Те тръгнаха, възлязоха на планината, дойдоха до долина Есхол и я обгледаха;

²⁵па взеха в ръце си плодове от земята, донесоха ни, и ни известиха, като казаха: добра е земята, която Господ, Бог наш, ни дава.

²⁶Но вие не рачихте да вървите и се възпротивихте на повелението на Господа, вашия Бог,

²⁷^(Q)и роптахте в шатрите си, като казвахте: Господ, от омраза към нас, ни изведе от земята Египетска, за да ни предаде в ръцете на аморейци и да ни изтреби;

²⁸^(R)къде ще вървим? нашите братя ни обезсърчиха, като казаха: оня народ е поголям (по-многоброен) и по-едър от нас, там градовете са големи и с укрепления до небеса, па и синовете Енакови видяхме там.

²⁹^(S)Тогава аз ви казах: не се страхувайте и не се бойте от тях;

³⁰^(T)Господ, Бог ваш, върви пред вас; Той ще се сражава за вас, както направи с вас в Египет, пред очите ви,

³¹^(U)и в тая пустиня, дето, както ти видя, Господ, Бог твой, те носеше, както човек носи сина си, по целия път, по който преминахте, докле стигнахте на това място.

³²^(V)Но и при това вие не вярвахте на Господа, вашия Бог,

³³^(W)Който вървеше пред вас по пътя, за да ви търси място, дето да се спрете – нощем в огън, за да ви посочва пътя, по който да вървите, а денем в облак.

³⁴И когато Господ (Бог) чу думите ви, разгневи се, и се закле, като каза:

³⁵^(X)никой от тия хора, от тоя зъл род, няма да види добрата земя, за която се клех, че ще дам на отците ви;

³⁶само Халев, Иефониев син, ще я види; нему ще дам земята, по която е ходил, и на синовете му, задето се покоряваше Господу.

³⁷^(Y)Господ се разгневи и на мене заради вас, като каза: и ти няма да влезеш там;

³⁸^(Z)Иисус, син Навинов, който е при тебе, той ще влезе там; него подкрепи, понеже той ще въведе Израиля, за да я владее;

³⁹^(AA)децата ви, за които казвахте, че ще станат плячка за враговете, и синовете ви, които засега не знаят ни добро, ни зло, те ще влязат там, тям ще я дам, и те ще я завладеят;

⁴⁰^(AB)а вие се обърнете и тръгнете за пустинята по пътя към Червено море.

The Previous Command to Enter Canaan

1 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel ^(A)on this side of the Jordan in the wilderness, in the ^[a]plain opposite ^[b]Suph, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. ²It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir ^(B)to Kadesh Barnea. ³Now it came to pass ^(C)in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him as commandments to them, ⁴^(D)after he had killed Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt at Ashtaroth ^(E)in^[c] Edrei.

⁵On this side of the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying, ⁶“The Lord our God spoke to us ^(F)in Horeb, saying: ‘You have dwelt long ^(G)enough at this mountain. ⁷Turn and take your journey, and go to the mountains of the Amorites, to all the neighboring places in the ^[d]plain, in the mountains and in the lowland, in the South and on the seacoast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the River Euphrates. ⁸See, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which the Lord ^[e]swore to your fathers—to ^(H)Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—to give to them and their descendants after them.’

Tribal Leaders Appointed^(I)

⁹“And ^(J)I spoke to you at that time, saying: ‘I ^[f]alone am not able to bear you. ¹⁰The Lord your God has multiplied you, ^(K)and here you are today, as the stars of heaven in multitude. ¹¹^(L)May the Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times more numerous than you are, and bless you ^(M)as He has promised you! ¹²^(N)How can I alone bear your problems and your burdens and your complaints? ¹³Choose wise, understanding, and knowledgeable men from among your tribes, and I will make them ^[g]heads over you.’ ¹⁴And you answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have told us to do is good.’ ¹⁵So I took ^(O)the heads of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and ^[h]made them heads over you, leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds, leaders of fifties, leaders of tens, and officers for your tribes.

¹⁶“Then I commanded your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your brethren, and ^(P)judge righteously between a man and his ^(Q)brother or the stranger who is with him. ¹⁷^(R)You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man’s presence, for ^(S)the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, ^(T)bring to me, and I will hear it.’ ¹⁸And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.

Israel’s Refusal to Enter the Land^(U)

¹⁹“So we departed from Horeb, ^(V)and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the mountains of the Amorites, as the Lord our God had commanded us. Then ^(W)we came to Kadesh Barnea. ²⁰And I said to you, ‘You have come to the mountains of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. ²¹Look, the Lord your God has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as the Lord God of your fathers has spoken to you; ^(X)do not fear or be discouraged.’

²²“And every one of you came near to me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, and let them search out the land for us, and bring back word to us of the way by which we should go up, and of the cities into which we shall come.’

²³“The plan pleased me well; so ^(Y)I took twelve of your men, one man from each tribe. ²⁴^(Z)And they departed and went up into the mountains, and came to the Valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. ²⁵They also took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought back word to us, saying, ‘It is a ^(AA)good land which the Lord our God is giving us.’

²⁶^(AB)“Nevertheless you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; ²⁷and you ^(AC)complained in your tents, and said, ‘Because the Lord ^(AD)hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. ²⁸Where can we go up? Our brethren have ^[i]discouraged our hearts, saying, ^(AE)“The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; moreover we have seen the sons of the ^(AF)Anakim there.” ’

²⁹“Then I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, ^(AG)or afraid of them. ³⁰^(AH)The Lord your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, ³¹and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a ^(AI)man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ ³²Yet, for all that, ^(AJ)you did not believe the Lord your God, ³³^(AK)who went in the way before you ^(AL)to search out a place for you to pitch your tents, to show you the way you should go, in the fire by night and in the cloud by day.

The Penalty for Israel’s Rebellion^(AM)

³⁴“And the Lord heard the sound of your words, and was angry, ^(AN)and took an oath, saying, ³⁵^(AO)‘Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land of which I ^[j]swore to give to your fathers, ³⁶^(AP)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and his children I am giving the land on which he walked, because ^(AQ)he ^[k]wholly followed the Lord.’ ³⁷^(AR)The Lord was also angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘Even you shall not go in there. ³⁸^(AS)Joshua the son of Nun, ^(AT)who stands before you, he shall go in there. ^(AU)Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

³⁹^(AV)‘Moreover your little ones and your children, who ^(AW)you say will be victims, who today ^(AX)have no knowledge of good and evil, they shall go in there; to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. ⁴⁰^(AY)But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.’

⁴¹“Then you answered and said to me, ^(AZ)‘We have sinned against the Lord; we will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And when everyone of you had girded on his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the mountain.

⁴²“And the Lord said to me, ‘Tell them, ^(BA)“Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.” ’ ⁴³So I spoke to you; yet you would not listen, but ^(BB)rebelled against the command of the Lord, and ^(BC)presumptuously^[l] went up into the mountain. ⁴⁴And the Amorites who dwelt in that mountain came out against you and chased you ^(BD)as bees do, and drove you back from Seir to Hormah. ⁴⁵Then you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord would not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.

The Command to Leave Horeb

1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in ^(A)the Arabah opposite ^(B)Suph, between ^(C)Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. ²It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to ^(D)Kadesh-barnea. ³^(E)In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them, ⁴after ^(F)he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ^(G)Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in ^(H)Edrei. ⁵Beyond the Jordan, ^(I)in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, ⁶“The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ^(J)‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. ⁷Turn and take your journey, and go to ^(K)the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in ^(L)the Arabah, ^(M)in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and ^(N)by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. ⁸See, I have set the land before you. ⁹“At that time ^(P)I said to you, ‘I am not able to bear you by myself. ¹⁰The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, ^(Q)you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven. ¹¹^(R)May the Lord, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, ^(S)as he has promised you! ¹²^(T)How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife? ¹³^(U)Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ ¹⁴And you answered me, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’ ¹⁵So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, ^(V)and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes. ¹⁶And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and ^(W)judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him. ¹⁷^(X)You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for ^(Y)the judgment is God's. And ^(AB)we came to Kadesh-barnea. ²⁰And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. ²¹See, the Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has told you. ^(AC)Do not fear or be dismayed.’ ²²Then all of you came near me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may explore the land for us and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up and the cities into which we shall come.’ ²³The thing seemed good to me, and ^(AD)I took twelve men from you, one man from each tribe. ²⁴And ^(AE)they turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshcol and spied it out. ²⁵And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us, and brought us word again and said, ‘It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.’

²⁶“Yet you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. ²⁷And ^(AF)you murmured in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord ^(AG)hated us he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, ^(AH)to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. ²⁸Where are we going up? ^(AI)Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, ^(AJ)“The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen ^(AK)the sons of the Anakim there.”’ ²⁹Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. ³⁰The Lord your God who goes before you ^(AL)will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, ³¹and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God ^(AM)carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ ³²Yet in spite of this word ^(AN)you did not believe the Lord your God, ³³^(AO)who went before you in the way ^(AP)to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.

The Penalty for Israel's Rebellion

³⁴“And the Lord heard your words and was angered, and he swore, ³⁵^(AQ)‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, ³⁶^(AR)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁴¹“Then you answered me, ^(AZ)‘We have sinned against the Lord. We ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every one of you fastened on his weapons of war and thought it easy to go up into the hill country. ⁴²And the Lord said to me, ^(BA)‘Say to them, Do not go up or fight, ^(BB)for I am not in your midst, lest you be defeated before your enemies.’ ⁴³So I spoke to you, and you would not listen; but you rebelled against the command of the Lord and ^(BC)presumptuously went up into the hill country. ⁴⁴^(BD)Then the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you ^(BE)as bees do and beat you down in Seir as far as ^(BF)Hormah. ⁴⁵And you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord did not listen to your voice or give ear to you. ⁴⁶So ^(BG)you remained at Kadesh many days, the days that you remained there.

Nombramiento de jefes

⁹»En aquel tiempo le dije al pueblo: “Ayúdenme. Ustedes son una gran carga para que yo la lleve solo, ¹⁰porque el Señor nos ha multiplicado como las estrellas. ¹¹Quiera él multiplicarnos mil veces más y bendecirnos como ha prometido. ¹²Pero ¿qué puede hacer un hombre solo para resolver las dificultades, los pleitos y los problemas que hay entre ustedes? ¹³Elijan, pues, hombres de cada tribu que sean sabios, experimentados y entendidos, y yo los pondré como jefes”.

¹⁴»Ellos estuvieron de acuerdo con esto. ¹⁵Entonces tomé los hombres que eligieron, varios de cada tribu, y los señalé como jefes administrativos a cargo de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez para decidir en sus dificultades y ayudarles en todo. ¹⁶Les di órdenes de que fueran perfectamente justos en todo tiempo con sus hermanos y aun con los extranjeros. ¹⁷“Cuando tomen decisiones”, les dije; “no favorezcan a un hombre porque sea rico; sean justos con el grande y con el pequeño. Misión de los espías

^19-21»Luego nos alejamos del monte Horeb y viajamos a través del desierto grande y terrible, y llegamos finalmente a las montañas de los amorreos a las cuales el Señor nuestro Dios nos había dirigido. Estábamos entonces en Cades Barnea (en el límite con la Tierra prometida) y le dije al pueblo: “El Señor, el Dios de nuestros antepasados, nos ha dado esta tierra. Vayan y poséanla como él nos ha dicho. No teman, ni duden”.

²²»Pero los israelitas replicaron: “Deja que primero enviemos espías para descubrir el mejor camino de entrada y para decidir qué ciudades debemos capturar en primer lugar”.

²³»Esto me pareció bien, por lo que elegí doce espías, uno de cada tribu. ^24-25Los espías cruzaron las colinas y llegaron al valle de Escol, y volvieron con muestras de las frutas que allí se producían. Una sola mirada bastó para convencernos de que la tierra que el Señor nos había dado era una tierra buena.

Rebelión contra el Señor

²⁶»Pero el pueblo no quiso entrar y se rebeló contra el mandamiento del Señor. ²⁷Todos a una sola voz murmuraron y se quejaron en sus tiendas y dijeron: “El Señor debe aborrecernos pues nos ha sacado de Egipto para ser asesinados en el desierto por estos amorreos. ²⁸¿A dónde vamos a entrar? Nuestros hermanos que han visitado la tierra nos han atemorizado con todo lo que nos contaron. Dicen que la gente de esa tierra es alta y fuerte, y que los muros de sus ciudades llegan hasta el cielo. Por si fuera poco, han visto gigantes allí: los descendientes de Anac”.

²⁹»Pero yo les dije: “No teman. ³⁰El Señor nuestro Dios irá delante, y peleará por ustedes como lo hizo en Egipto. ³¹Él nos ha cuidado en nuestra peregrinación por el desierto de la manera que un padre cuida a sus hijos”. ³²Pero nada de lo que les dije los convenció. No quisieron creer al Señor nuestro Dios, ³³quien los había guiado por el camino y había elegido los mejores lugares para que acamparan, y los había guiado con una columna de fuego por la noche y una columna de nubes durante el día.

³⁴»El Señor oyó la queja de los israelitas y se enojó. ³⁵Juró que nadie de esa generación viviría para ver las bondades de la tierra que había prometido a sus antepasados. ³⁶Caleb (hijo de Jefone) es el único que, por haber confiado completamente en el Señor, recibirá, para él y sus descendientes, como heredad personal parte de la tierra sobre la cual había andado.

³⁷»Y el Señor también se enojó conmigo por causa del pueblo, y me dijo: “Tampoco tú entrarás en la Tierra prometida. ³⁸Josué (el hijo de Nun), tu ayudante, guiará a tu pueblo hacia ella. Anímale mientras se prepara para tomar el mando. ³⁹La tierra se la entregaré a la nueva generación, a aquellos que según sus padres iban a morir en el desierto y todos los pequeños quienes todavía no saben distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo. ⁴⁰Por eso se dirigió a los de la antigua generación y les dijo: Ya que así lo desean, ¡regresen al desierto, camino del Mar Rojo!”.

⁴¹»Entonces ellos confesaron: “Hemos pecado; entraremos en la tierra y pelearemos por ella como el Señor nuestro Dios nos ha dicho”. Se armaron, pues, pensando que sería fácil conquistar la región. ⁴²Pero el Señor me dijo: “Ordénales que no lo hagan, porque no iré con ellos; ¡serán derrotados!”.

⁴³»Pero los israelitas no quisieron escuchar. En abierta rebelión contra el mandato del Señor, subieron a los montes a pelear. ⁴⁴Pero los amorreos que vivían allí salieron a presentarles batalla y, como avispas, los persiguieron desde Seír hasta Jormá y mataron a muchos de ellos. ⁴⁵Luego regresaron y lloraron delante del Señor, pero no los escuchó. ⁴⁶Tuvieron que permanecer en Cades largo tiempo.
