Народ признаје грех
10 Док се Езра молио и признавао грехе, плачући и ничице се бацајући пред Божијим Домом, силно мноштво Израелаца – мушкараца, жена и деце – окупило се око њега. И народ је горко плакао.
2 Тада Шеханја син Јехиелов, један од Еламових потомака, рече Езри: »Били смо неверни нашем Богу женећи се туђинкама из народâ око нас. Али, ипак још има наде за Израел. 3 Стога, хајде да сада склопимо савез пред нашим Богом и обавежемо се да отерамо све те жене и њихову децу, по твом савету, господару, и савету оних који се боје заповести нашега Бога. Нека се то уради по Закону. 4 Устани, јер то је твој посао, а ми ћемо бити с тобом. Буди храбар и уради то.«
5 И Езра устаде, па затражи да се главни свештеници, Левити и сви Израелци закуну да ће урадити како је речено. И они се заклеше.
6 Онда Езра оде од Божијег Дома и уђе у собу Јоанана сина Елјашивовог. А док је био тамо, није јео хлеба ни пио воде, јер је и даље туговао због неверства изгнаника. 7 Потом је у Јуди и у Јерусалиму издат проглас да се сви изгнаници окупе у Јерусалиму, 8 а ко не дође за три дана, биће му, у складу с одлуком поглаварâ и старешинâ, заплењена сва имовина и биће искључен из заједнице изгнаника. 9 Тако су се за три дана сви људи Јуде и Венијамина окупили у Јерусалиму. А двадесетог дана деветог месеца, сав народ је седео на тргу пред Божијим Домом, дрхтећи због повода овом окупљању и због јаке кише.
10 Тада устаде свештеник Езра и рече им: »Били сте неверни. Женили сте се туђинкама и тако увећали Израелову кривицу. 11 Зато то сада признајте ГОСПОДУ, Богу ваших праотаца, и извршите његову вољу. Одвојте се од народâ земље и од ваших жена-туђинки.«
12 Цела заједница одврати снажним гласом: »Тако је! Морамо да урадимо као што кажеш. 13 Али, овде има много народа и кишно је доба, па не можемо да стојимо напољу. Осим тога, то не може да се изврши за дан-два, јер много нас је који смо у томе тешко згрешили. 14 Нека наши поглавари заступају целу заједницу, па нека онда свако из наших градова ко се оженио туђинком дође у заказано време, а с њим старешине и судије из сваког града, док се љути гнев нашега Бога због овога не одврати од нас.«
15 Томе се успротивише само Јонатан син Асахелов и Јахзеја син Тиквин, које подржаше Мешулам и Левит Шабетај.
16 Изгнаници учинише како је речено. Свештеник Езра одабра људе који су били главе породица, по једног из сваког дома, а сви су били одређени по имену. Они седоше да испитују случајеве првог дана десетог месеца, 17 а до првог дана првог месеца завршише са свима који су се оженили туђинкама.
Списак оних који су се оженили туђинкама
18 Међу потомцима свештеникâ, ови су се оженили туђинкама:
од потомака Исуса сина Јоцадаковог и његове браће: Маасеја, Елиезер, Јарив и Гедалја; 19 сви они обећаше да ће отерати своје жене и сваки за своју кривицу принесе овна из стада као жртву за кривицу;
20 од Имерових потомака: Ханани и Зевадја;
21 од Харимових потомака: Маасеја, Илија, Шемаја, Јехиел и Узија;
22 од Пашхурових потомака: Елјоенај, Маасеја, Јишмаел, Натанаил, Јозавад и Еласа.
23 Међу Левитима:
Јозавад, Шими, Келаја, то јест Келита, Петахја, Јуда и Елиезер.
24 Од певача: Елјашив.
Од чувара капија: Шалум, Телем и Ури.
25 Међу осталим Израелцима:
од Парошевих потомака: Рамја, Јизија, Малкија, Мијамин, Елеазар, Малкија и Бенаја;
26 од Еламових потомака: Матанја, Захарија, Јехиел, Авди, Јеремот и Илија;
27 од Затуових потомака: Елјоенај, Елјашив, Матанја, Јеремот, Завад и Азиза;
28 од Бевајевих потомака: Јоанан, Ананија, Забај и Ателај;
29 од Банијевих потомака: Мешулам, Малух, Адаја, Јашув, Шеал и Јеремот;
30 од Пахат-Моавових потомака: Адна, Келал, Бенаја, Маасеја, Матанја, Бецалел, Бинуј и Манасија;
31 од Харимових потомака: Елиезер, Јишија, Малкија, Шемаја, Симеон, 32 Венијамин, Малух и Шемарја;
33 од Хашумових потомака: Матенај, Матата, Завад, Елифелет, Јеремај, Манасија и Шими;
34 од Банијевих потомака: Маадај, Амрам, Уел, 35 Бенаја, Бедја, Келуху, 36 Ванја, Меремот, Елјашив, 37 Матанја, Матенај и Јаасу;
38 од Бинујевих потомака: Шими, 39 Шелемја, Натан, Адаја, 40 Махнадвај, Шашај, Шарај, 41 Азарел, Шелемја, Шемарја, 42 Шалум, Амарја и Јосиф;
43 од Невових потомака: Јеиел, Матитја, Завад, Зевина, Јадај, Јоил и Бенаја.
44 Сви ови су се били оженили туђинкама и неке од њих су родиле децу[a].

The People’s Confession of Sin
10 While Ezra was praying and confessing,(A) weeping(B) and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites—men, women and children—gathered around him. They too wept bitterly. 2 Then Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam,(C) said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful(D) to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.(E) 3 Now let us make a covenant(F) before our God to send away(G) all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law. 4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”
5 So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath(H) to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath. 6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he was there, he ate no food and drank no water,(I) because he continued to mourn over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
7 A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in Jerusalem. 8 Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
9 Within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin(J) had gathered in Jerusalem. And on the twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people were sitting in the square before the house of God, greatly distressed by the occasion and because of the rain. 10 Then Ezra(K) the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel’s guilt.(L) 11 Now honor[a] the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.”(M)
12 The whole assembly responded with a loud voice:(N) “You are right! We must do as you say. 13 But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because we have sinned greatly in this thing. 14 Let our officials act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at a set time, along with the elders and judges(O) of each town, until the fierce anger(P) of our God in this matter is turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai(Q) the Levite, opposed this.
16 So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to investigate the cases, 17 and by the first day of the first month they finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign women.
Those Guilty of Intermarriage
18 Among the descendants of the priests, the following had married foreign women:(R)
From the descendants of Joshua(S) son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah. 19 (They all gave their hands(T) in pledge to put away their wives, and for their guilt they each presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.)(U)
20 From the descendants of Immer:(V)
Hanani and Zebadiah.
21 From the descendants of Harim:(W)
Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel and Uzziah.
22 From the descendants of Pashhur:(X)
Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad and Elasah.
23 Among the Levites:(Y)
Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.
24 From the musicians:
Eliashib.(Z)
From the gatekeepers:
Shallum, Telem and Uri.
25 And among the other Israelites:
From the descendants of Parosh:(AA)
Ramiah, Izziah, Malkijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malkijah and Benaiah.
26 From the descendants of Elam:(AB)
Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth and Elijah.
27 From the descendants of Zattu:
Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad and Aziza.
28 From the descendants of Bebai:
Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai and Athlai.
29 From the descendants of Bani:
Meshullam, Malluk, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal and Jeremoth.
30 From the descendants of Pahath-Moab:
Adna, Kelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui and Manasseh.
31 From the descendants of Harim:
Eliezer, Ishijah, Malkijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, 32 Benjamin, Malluk and Shemariah.
33 From the descendants of Hashum:
Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh and Shimei.
34 From the descendants of Bani:
Maadai, Amram, Uel, 35 Benaiah, Bedeiah, Keluhi, 36 Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, 37 Mattaniah, Mattenai and Jaasu.
38 From the descendants of Binnui:[b]
Shimei, 39 Shelemiah, Nathan, Adaiah, 40 Maknadebai, Shashai, Sharai, 41 Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah, 42 Shallum, Amariah and Joseph.
43 From the descendants of Nebo:
Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel and Benaiah.
44 All these had married foreign women, and some of them had children by these wives.[c]
