3 Sardes
Schrijf aan de boodschapper van de gemeente in Sardes:
Dit zijn de woorden van Hem die de zeven geesten van God en de zeven sterren heeft: Ik ben van uw doen en laten op de hoogte. Ik weet dat u de naam hebt dat u een levende gemeente bent, maar u bent dood. 2 Word wakker en versterk wat nog leeft, anders sterft dat ook. Als God op u let, kan Hij niet tevreden zijn over uw daden. 3 Herinner u hoe u het goede nieuws hebt gehoord en hoe enthousiast u erover was. Keer daarnaar terug en leef weer zoals toen. Maar als u niet wakker wilt worden, zal Ik u verrassen als een dief in de nacht. Dan kom Ik op een moment dat u Mij niet verwacht. 4 Toch zijn er in Sardes een paar mensen die hun kleren niet bevlekt hebben. Die zijn het waard altijd bij Mij te zijn en witte kleren te dragen.
5 Wie overwint, zal dus witte kleren aankrijgen. Ik zal zijn naam niet schrappen uit het boek, waarin de mensen vermeld staan die het eeuwige leven hebben, maar voor mijn Vader en zijn engelen verklaren dat hij bij Mij hoort.
6 Als u oren hebt, luister dan naar wat de Geest tegen de gemeenten zegt.
7 Filadelfia
Schrijf aan de boodschapper van de gemeente in Filadelfia:
Dit zijn de woorden van Hem die heilig en betrouwbaar is, die de sleutel van het nieuwe Jeruzalem heeft, die binnenlaat wie Hij wil en buitensluit wie Hij wil: 8 Ik ken uw doen en laten. Ik weet dat u niet sterk bent, maar u hebt gedaan wat Ik zei en bent Mij niet ontrouw geworden. Daarom heb Ik een deur voor u geopend die niemand sluiten kan. 9 Ik zal mensen naar u toesturen die bij Satan horen. Zij doen zich voor als Joden, als kinderen van God, maar het zijn leugenaars. Ik zal hen aan uw voeten laten neerknielen, zij zullen niet anders kunnen dan erkennen dat Ik u liefheb. 10 U bent Mij dwars door alles heen trouw gebleven, zoals Ik u had opgedragen, en daarom zal Ik ook trouw blijven aan u in de komende tijd van beproeving, waarin alle bewoners van de aarde zwaar op de proef worden gesteld. 11 Ik kom spoedig. Houd vast wat u hebt. Laat u de erekroon door niemand afnemen.
12 Wie overwint, zal Ik maken tot een zuil in het huis van mijn God, een zuil die daar eens en voorgoed zal staan. Daar zal Ik de naam van mijn God op schrijven en de naam van de stad van mijn God. Die stad is het nieuwe Jeruzalem, dat mijn God uit de hemel zal laten neerdalen. En Ik zal mijn nieuwe naam er ook op schrijven.
13 Als u oren hebt, luister dan naar wat de Geest tegen de gemeenten zegt.
14 Laodicea
Schrijf aan de boodschapper van de gemeente in Laodicea:
Dit zijn de woorden van Amen, van Hem die bevestigt, de trouwe en oprechte getuige, het begin van Gods schepping: 15 Ik ken uw doen en laten. Ik weet dat u niet koud en niet warm bent. Wás u maar koud of warm! 16 Maar nu u lauw bent, word Ik misselijk van u, Ik zal u uitspugen. 17 U zegt dat u rijk bent en niets tekort komt. Maar u beseft niet dat u er geestelijk ellendig aan toe bent: u bent arm, blind en naakt. 18 Ik geef u de raad goud van Mij te kopen dat in het vuur gezuiverd is, dan pas zult u echt rijk worden. En koop witte kleren van Mij, zodat u niet naakt bent en u niet hoeft te schamen. Koop ook ogenzalf en smeer dat op uw ogen, zodat u echt kunt zien. 19 Mensen die Ik liefheb, roep Ik ter verantwoording en bestraf Ik. Doe dus uw best en kom tot inkeer.
20 Luister, Ik sta voor de deur en klop. Als iemand Mij hoort en de deur opendoet, zal Ik bij hem binnenkomen. Dan zullen wij samen eten, hij met Mij en Ik met hem. 21 Wie overwint, mag samen met Mij op mijn troon zitten, net zoals Ik Zelf overwonnen heb en samen met mijn Vader op zijn troon zit.
22 Als u oren hebt, luister dan naar wat de Geest tegen de gemeenten zegt.

To Sardis
3 Write this to Sardis, to the Angel of the church. The One holding the Seven Spirits of God in one hand, a firm grip on the Seven Stars with the other, speaks:
“I see right through your work. You have a reputation for vigor and zest, but you’re dead, stone-dead.
2-3 “Up on your feet! Take a deep breath! Maybe there’s life in you yet. But I wouldn’t know it by looking at your busywork; nothing of God’s work has been completed. Your condition is desperate. Think of the gift you once had in your hands, the Message you heard with your ears—grasp it again and turn back to God.
“If you pull the covers back over your head and sleep on, oblivious to God, I’ll return when you least expect it, break into your life like a thief in the night.
4 “You still have a few followers of Jesus in Sardis who haven’t ruined themselves wallowing in the muck of the world’s ways. They’ll walk with me on parade! They’ve proved their worth!
5 “Conquerors will march in the victory parade, their names indelible in the Book of Life. I’ll lead them up and present them by name to my Father and his Angels.
6 “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches.”
To Philadelphia
7 Write this to Philadelphia, to the Angel of the church. The Holy, the True—David’s key in his hand, opening doors no one can lock, locking doors no one can open—speaks:
8 “I see what you’ve done. Now see what I’ve done. I’ve opened a door before you that no one can slam shut. You don’t have much strength, I know that; you used what you had to keep my Word. You didn’t deny me when times were rough.
9 “And watch as I take those who call themselves true believers but are nothing of the kind, pretenders whose true membership is in the club of Satan—watch as I strip off their pretensions and they’re forced to acknowledge it’s you that I’ve loved.
10 “Because you kept my Word in passionate patience, I’ll keep you safe in the time of testing that will be here soon, and all over the earth, every man, woman, and child put to the test.
11 “I’m on my way; I’ll be there soon. Keep a tight grip on what you have so no one distracts you and steals your crown.
12 “I’ll make each conqueror a pillar in the sanctuary of my God, a permanent position of honor. Then I’ll write names on you, the pillars: the Name of my God, the Name of God’s City—the new Jerusalem coming down out of Heaven—and my new Name.
13 “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches.”
To Laodicea
14 Write to Laodicea, to the Angel of the church. God’s Yes, the Faithful and Accurate Witness, the First of God’s creation, says:
15-17 “I know you inside and out, and find little to my liking. You’re not cold, you’re not hot—far better to be either cold or hot! You’re stale. You’re stagnant. You make me want to vomit. You brag, ‘I’m rich, I’ve got it made, I need nothing from anyone,’ oblivious that in fact you’re a pitiful, blind beggar, threadbare and homeless.
18 “Here’s what I want you to do: Buy your gold from me, gold that’s been through the refiner’s fire. Then you’ll be rich. Buy your clothes from me, clothes designed in Heaven. You’ve gone around half-naked long enough. And buy medicine for your eyes from me so you can see, really see.
19 “The people I love, I call to account—prod and correct and guide so that they’ll live at their best. Up on your feet, then! About face! Run after God!
20-21 “Look at me. I stand at the door. I knock. If you hear me call and open the door, I’ll come right in and sit down to supper with you. Conquerors will sit alongside me at the head table, just as I, having conquered, took the place of honor at the side of my Father. That’s my gift to the conquerors!
22 “Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches.”

To the Church in Sardis
3 “To the angel[a] of the church in Sardis(A) write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[b](B) of God and the seven stars.(C) I know your deeds;(D) you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.(E) 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.(F) But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief,(G) and you will not know at what time(H) I will come to you.
4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes.(I) They will walk with me, dressed in white,(J) for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious(K) will, like them, be dressed in white.(L) I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life,(M) but will acknowledge that name before my Father(N) and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear(O) what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Philadelphia
7 “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia(P) write:
These are the words of him who is holy(Q) and true,(R) who holds the key of David.(S) What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds.(T) See, I have placed before you an open door(U) that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.(V) 9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan,(W) who claim to be Jews though they are not,(X) but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet(Y) and acknowledge that I have loved you.(Z) 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you(AA) from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world(AB) to test(AC) the inhabitants of the earth.(AD)
11 I am coming soon.(AE) Hold on to what you have,(AF) so that no one will take your crown.(AG) 12 The one who is victorious(AH) I will make a pillar(AI) in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God(AJ) and the name of the city of my God,(AK) the new Jerusalem,(AL) which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. 13 Whoever has ears, let them hear(AM) what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Laodicea
14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea(AN) write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness,(AO) the ruler of God’s creation.(AP) 15 I know your deeds,(AQ) that you are neither cold nor hot.(AR) I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’(AS) But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.(AT) 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire,(AU) so you can become rich; and white clothes(AV) to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness;(AW) and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.(AX) So be earnest and repent.(AY) 20 Here I am! I stand at the door(AZ) and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,(BA) I will come in(BB) and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious,(BC) I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,(BD) just as I was victorious(BE) and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear(BF) what the Spirit says to the churches.”
