Rebuilding the Walls

Eliashib the high priest(A) and his fellow priests began rebuilding the Sheep Gate.(B) They dedicated it and installed its doors. After building the wall to the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel,(C) they dedicated it. The men of Jericho(D) built next to Eliashib,(E) and next to them Zaccur son of Imri built.

Fish Gate

The sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate.(F) They built it with beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars.(G) Next to them Meremoth(H) son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, made repairs. Beside them Meshullam(I) son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel, made repairs. Next to them Zadok son of Baana made repairs. Beside them the Tekoites(J) made repairs, but their nobles did not lift a finger to help[a] their supervisors.

Old Gate, Broad Wall, and Tower of the Ovens

Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah repaired the Old[b] Gate.(K) They built it with beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. Next to them the repairs were done by Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, and the men of Gibeon(L) and Mizpah, who were under the authority[c](M) of the governor(N) of the region west of the Euphrates River.(O) After him Uzziel son of Harhaiah, the goldsmith,(P) made repairs, and next to him Hananiah son of the perfumer made repairs. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall.(Q)

Next to them Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler over half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs. 10 After them Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs across from his house.(R) Next to him Hattush the son of Hashabneiah made repairs. 11 Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-moab made repairs to another section, as well as to the Tower of the Ovens.(S) 12 Beside him Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler over half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs—he and his daughters.

Valley Gate, Dung Gate, and Fountain Gate

13 Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate. They rebuilt it and installed its doors, bolts, and bars, and repaired 500 yards[d] of the wall to the Dung Gate.(T) 14 Malchijah son of Rechab, ruler over the district of Beth-haccherem,(U) repaired the Dung Gate.(V) He rebuilt it and installed its doors, bolts, and bars.

15 Shallun[e] son of Col-hozeh, ruler over the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate.(W) He rebuilt it and roofed it. Then he installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also made repairs to the wall of the Pool of Shelah(X) near the king’s garden,(Y) as far as the stairs that descend from the city of David.(Z)

16 After him Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler over half the district of Beth-zur,(AA) made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs of David,(AB) as far as the artificial pool(AC) and the House of the Warriors.(AD) 17 Next to him the Levites(AE) made repairs under Rehum son of Bani. Beside him Hashabiah, ruler over half the district of Keilah,(AF) made repairs for his district. 18 After him their fellow Levites made repairs under Binnui[f] son of Henadad, ruler over half the district of Keilah. 19 Next to him Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler over Mizpah, made repairs to another section opposite the ascent to the armory at the Angle.(AG)

The Angle, Water Gate, and Tower on the Ophel

20 After him Baruch son of Zabbai[g] diligently repaired another section, from the Angle to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.(AH) 21 Beside him Meremoth(AI) son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, made repairs to another section, from the door of Eliashib’s(AJ) house to the end of his house. 22 And next to him the priests from the surrounding area made repairs.

23 After them Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs opposite their house. Beside them Azariah son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house. 24 After him Binnui(AK) son of Henadad made repairs to another section, from the house of Azariah to the Angle and the corner. 25 Palal son of Uzai made repairs opposite the Angle and tower that juts out from the upper palace[h] of the king,(AL) by the courtyard of the guard.(AM) Beside him Pedaiah son of Parosh, 26 and the temple servants(AN) living on Ophel[i](AO) made repairs opposite the Water Gate(AP) toward the east and the tower that juts out. 27 Next to him the Tekoites(AQ) made repairs to another section from a point opposite the great tower that juts out, as far as the wall of Ophel.(AR)

Horse Gate, Inspection Gate, and Sheep Gate

28 Each of the priests made repairs above the Horse Gate,(AS) each opposite his own house. 29 After them Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. And beside him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, guard of the East Gate, made repairs. 30 Next to him Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph made repairs to another section.

After them Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs opposite his room. 31 Next to him Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths,(AT) made repairs to the house of the temple servants(AU) and the merchants, opposite the Inspection[j] Gate, and as far as the upper room of the corner. 32 The goldsmiths(AV) and merchants made repairs between the upper room of the corner and the Sheep Gate.(AW)

Progress in Spite of Opposition

[k]When Sanballat(AX) heard that we were rebuilding the wall,(AY) he became furious. He mocked the Jews(AZ) before his colleagues and the powerful men[l] of Samaria,(BA) and said, “What are these pathetic Jews doing? Can they restore it by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they ever finish it? Can they bring these burnt stones(BB) back to life from the mounds of rubble?”(BC) Then Tobiah the Ammonite,(BD) who was beside him, said, “Indeed, even if a fox(BE) climbed up what they are building, he would break down their stone wall!”

Listen, our God, for we are despised. Make their insults return on their own heads and let them be taken as plunder to a land of captivity. Do not cover their guilt or let their sin be erased from Your sight, because they have provoked[m] the builders.(BF)

So we rebuilt the wall until the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had the will to keep working.(BG)

[n]When Sanballat, Tobiah, and the Arabs,(BH) Ammonites, and Ashdodites heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed,(BI) they became furious.(BJ) They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and throw it into confusion. So we prayed to our God and stationed a guard because of them day and night.

10 In Judah, it was said:[o]

The strength of the laborer fails,
since there is so much rubble.
We will never be able
to rebuild the wall.

11 And our enemies said, “They won’t know or see anything until we’re among them and can kill them and stop the work.” 12 When the Jews who lived nearby arrived, they said to us time and again,[p] “Everywhere you turn, they attack[q] us.” 13 So I stationed people behind the lowest sections of the wall, at the vulnerable areas. I stationed them by families with their swords, spears, and bows. 14 After I made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people,(BK) “Don’t be afraid of them.(BL) Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord, and fight for your countrymen, your sons and daughters, your wives and homes.”(BM)

Sword and Trowel

15 When our enemies heard that we knew their scheme and that God had frustrated it, every one of us returned to his own work on the wall. 16 From that day on, half of my men did the work while the other half held spears, shields, bows, and armor.(BN) The officers supported all the people of Judah, 17 who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers who carried the loads worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other. 18 Each of the builders had his sword strapped around his waist while he was building, and the trumpeter was beside me. 19 Then I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people:(BO) “The work is enormous and spread out, and we are separated far from one another along the wall.(BP) 20 Wherever you hear the trumpet sound, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us!”(BQ) 21 So we continued the work, while half of the men were holding spears from daybreak until the stars came out. 22 At that time, I also said to the people, “Let everyone and his servant spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that they can stand guard by night and work by day.” 23 And I, my brothers, my men, and the guards with me never took off our clothes. Each carried his weapon, even when washing.[r]

Social Injustice

There was a widespread outcry from the people and their wives against their Jewish countrymen. Some were saying, “We, our sons, and our daughters are numerous. Let us get grain so that we can eat and live.” Others were saying, “We are mortgaging our fields, vineyards, and homes to get grain during the famine.”(BR) Still others were saying, “We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax(BS) on our fields and vineyards.(BT) We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery.(BU) Some of our daughters are already enslaved,(BV) but we are powerless[s] because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

I became extremely angry(BW) when I heard their outcry and these complaints. After seriously considering the matter, I accused the nobles and officials, saying to them, “Each of you is charging his countrymen interest.”(BX) So I called a large assembly against them and said, “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish countrymen who were sold to foreigners, but now you sell your own countrymen, and we have to buy them back.”(BY) They remained silent and could not say a word.(BZ) Then I said, “What you are doing isn’t right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God(CA) and not invite the reproach of our foreign enemies?(CB) 10 Even I, as well as my brothers and my servants, have been lending them money and grain. Please, let us stop charging this interest.[t] 11 Return their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses to them immediately, along with the percentage[u] of the money, grain, new wine, and olive oil(CC) that you have been assessing them.”

12 They responded: “We will return these things and require nothing more from them.(CD) We will do as you say.”

So I summoned the priests and made everyone take an oath(CE) to do this. 13 I also shook the folds of my robe and said, “May God likewise shake from his house and property everyone who doesn’t keep this promise. May he be shaken out(CF) and have nothing!”

The whole assembly said, “Amen,” and they praised the Lord. Then the people did as they had promised.(CG)

Good and Bad Governors

14 Furthermore, from the day King Artaxerxes(CH) appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah—from the twentieth year until his thirty-second year, 12 years(CI)—I and my associates never ate from the food allotted to the governor. 15 The governors(CJ) who preceded me had heavily burdened the people, taking food and wine from them, as well as a pound[v] of silver. Their subordinates also oppressed the people, but I didn’t do this, because of the fear of God.(CK) 16 Instead, I devoted myself to the construction of the wall,(CL) and all my subordinates were gathered there for the work. We didn’t buy any land.(CM)

17 There were 150 Jews and officials, as well as guests from the surrounding nations at my table.(CN) 18 Each[w] day, one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me. An abundance of all kinds of wine was provided every 10 days.(CO) But I didn’t demand the food allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.

19 Remember me favorably, my God, for all that I have done for this people.(CP)

Attempts to Discourage the Builders

When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies(CQ) heard that I had rebuilt the wall and that no gap was left in it(CR)—though at that time I had not installed the doors in the gates(CS) Sanballat and Geshem(CT) sent me a message: “Come, let’s meet together in the villages of[x] the Ono Valley.”(CU) But they were planning to harm me.

So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” Four times they sent me the same proposal, and I gave them the same reply.

Sanballat(CV) sent me this same message a fifth time by his aide, who had an open letter in his hand. In it was written:

It is reported among the nations—and Geshem[y](CW) agrees—that you and the Jews plan to rebel. This is the reason you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king and have even set up the prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim on your behalf: “There is a king in Judah.”(CX) These rumors will be heard by the king. So come, let’s confer together.

Then I replied to him, “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”(CY) For they were all trying to intimidate(CZ) us, saying, “They will become discouraged[z] in the work,(DA) and it will never be finished.”

But now, my God, strengthen me.[aa](DB)

Attempts to Intimidate Nehemiah

10 I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was restricted to his house. He said:

Let us meet at the house of God
inside the temple.
Let us shut the temple doors
because they are coming to kill you.
They are coming to kill you tonight![ab]

11 But I said, “Should a man like me run away? How can I enter the temple and live?(DC) I will not go.” 12 I realized that God had not sent him, because of the prophecy he spoke against me. Tobiah and Sanballat(DD) had hired him. 13 He was hired, so that I would be intimidated,(DE) do as he suggested, sin, and get a bad reputation, in order that they could discredit me.

14 My God, remember(DF) Tobiah and Sanballat for what they have done, and also Noadiah the prophetess(DG) and the other prophets who wanted to intimidate me.

The Wall Completed

15 The wall was completed(DH) in 52 days, on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul.(DI) 16 When all our enemies(DJ) heard this, all the surrounding nations were intimidated(DK) and lost their confidence,[ac] for they realized that this task had been accomplished by our God.(DL)

17 During those days, the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah,(DM) and Tobiah’s letters came to them. 18 For many in Judah were bound by oath(DN) to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam(DO) son of Berechiah. 19 These nobles kept mentioning Tobiah’s good deeds to me, and they reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate(DP) me.

Builders of the Wall

Eliashib(A) the high priest and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt(B) the Sheep Gate.(C) They dedicated it and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and as far as the Tower of Hananel.(D) The men of Jericho(E) built the adjoining section, and Zakkur son of Imri built next to them.

The Fish Gate(F) was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and put its doors and bolts and bars in place. Meremoth(G) son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired the next section. Next to him Meshullam son of Berekiah, the son of Meshezabel, made repairs, and next to him Zadok son of Baana also made repairs. The next section was repaired by the men of Tekoa,(H) but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.[a]

The Jeshanah[b] Gate(I) was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. Next to them, repairs were made by men from Gibeon(J) and Mizpah—Melatiah of Gibeon and Jadon of Meronoth—places under the authority of the governor of Trans-Euphrates. Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired the next section; and Hananiah, one of the perfume-makers, made repairs next to that. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall.(K) Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, repaired the next section. 10 Adjoining this, Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his house, and Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs next to him. 11 Malkijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens.(L) 12 Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, repaired the next section with the help of his daughters.

13 The Valley Gate(M) was repaired by Hanun and the residents of Zanoah.(N) They rebuilt it and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. They also repaired a thousand cubits[c] of the wall as far as the Dung Gate.(O)

14 The Dung Gate was repaired by Malkijah son of Rekab, ruler of the district of Beth Hakkerem.(P) He rebuilt it and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place.

15 The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of Kol-Hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofing it over and putting its doors and bolts and bars in place. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Siloam,[d](Q) by the King’s Garden, as far as the steps going down from the City of David. 16 Beyond him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth Zur,(R) made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs[e](S) of David, as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Heroes.

17 Next to him, the repairs were made by the Levites under Rehum son of Bani. Beside him, Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah,(T) carried out repairs for his district. 18 Next to him, the repairs were made by their fellow Levites under Binnui[f] son of Henadad, ruler of the other half-district of Keilah. 19 Next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired another section, from a point facing the ascent to the armory as far as the angle of the wall. 20 Next to him, Baruch son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from the angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest. 21 Next to him, Meremoth(U) son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance of Eliashib’s house to the end of it.

22 The repairs next to him were made by the priests from the surrounding region. 23 Beyond them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house; and next to them, Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house. 24 Next to him, Binnui(V) son of Henadad repaired another section, from Azariah’s house to the angle and the corner, 25 and Palal son of Uzai worked opposite the angle and the tower projecting from the upper palace near the court of the guard.(W) Next to him, Pedaiah son of Parosh(X) 26 and the temple servants(Y) living on the hill of Ophel(Z) made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate(AA) toward the east and the projecting tower. 27 Next to them, the men of Tekoa(AB) repaired another section, from the great projecting tower(AC) to the wall of Ophel.

28 Above the Horse Gate,(AD) the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house. 29 Next to them, Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. Next to him, Shemaiah son of Shekaniah, the guard at the East Gate, made repairs. 30 Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berekiah made repairs opposite his living quarters. 31 Next to him, Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the room above the corner; 32 and between the room above the corner and the Sheep Gate(AE) the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.

Opposition to the Rebuilding

[g]When Sanballat(AF) heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, and in the presence of his associates(AG) and the army of Samaria, he said, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble(AH)—burned as they are?”

Tobiah(AI) the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!”(AJ)

Hear us, our God, for we are despised.(AK) Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. Do not cover up their guilt(AL) or blot out their sins from your sight,(AM) for they have thrown insults in the face of[h] the builders.

So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.

But when Sanballat, Tobiah,(AN) the Arabs, the Ammonites and the people of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry. They all plotted together(AO) to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it. But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.

10 Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, “The strength of the laborers(AP) is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.”

11 Also our enemies said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.”

12 Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

13 Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows. 14 After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid(AQ) of them. Remember(AR) the Lord, who is great and awesome,(AS) and fight(AT) for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”

15 When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it,(AU) we all returned to the wall, each to our own work.

16 From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah 17 who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon(AV) in the other, 18 and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet(AW) stayed with me.

19 Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet,(AX) join us there. Our God will fight(AY) for us!”

21 So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out. 22 At that time I also said to the people, “Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and as workers by day.” 23 Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.[i]

Nehemiah Helps the Poor

Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their fellow Jews. Some were saying, “We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain.”

Others were saying, “We are mortgaging our fields,(AZ) our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine.”(BA)

Still others were saying, “We have had to borrow money to pay the king’s tax(BB) on our fields and vineyards. Although we are of the same flesh and blood(BC) as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery.(BD) Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”(BE)

When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry. I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them, “You are charging your own people interest!”(BF) So I called together a large meeting to deal with them and said: “As far as possible, we have bought(BG) back our fellow Jews who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your own people, only for them to be sold back to us!” They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say.(BH)

So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach(BI) of our Gentile enemies? 10 I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let us stop charging interest!(BJ) 11 Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the interest(BK) you are charging them—one percent of the money, grain, new wine and olive oil.”

12 “We will give it back,” they said. “And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say.”

Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath(BL) to do what they had promised. 13 I also shook(BM) out the folds of my robe and said, “In this way may God shake out of their house and possessions anyone who does not keep this promise. So may such a person be shaken out and emptied!”

At this the whole assembly said, “Amen,”(BN) and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.

14 Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes,(BO) when I was appointed to be their governor(BP) in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year—twelve years—neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor. 15 But the earlier governors—those preceding me—placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels[j] of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God(BQ) I did not act like that. 16 Instead,(BR) I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we[k] did not acquire any land.

17 Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations. 18 Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry(BS) were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people.

19 Remember(BT) me with favor, my God, for all I have done for these people.

Further Opposition to the Rebuilding

When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah,(BU) Geshem(BV) the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates— Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages[l] on the plain of Ono.(BW)

But they were scheming to harm me; so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.

Then, the fifth time, Sanballat(BX) sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter in which was written:

“It is reported among the nations—and Geshem[m](BY) says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”

I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”

They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.”

But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”

10 One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple(BZ), and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you.”

11 But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!” 12 I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me(CA) because Tobiah and Sanballat(CB) had hired him. 13 He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.(CC)

14 Remember(CD) Tobiah and Sanballat,(CE) my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet(CF) Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets(CG) have been trying to intimidate me. 15 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.

Opposition to the Completed Wall

16 When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.

17 Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. 18 For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. 19 Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.
