2 เรื่องนี้ เป็นไปตามที่อิสยาห์ผู้พูดแทนพระเจ้าได้เขียนไว้ว่า
“ดูสิ เราจะส่งผู้ส่งข่าวของเรานำหน้าท่านไปก่อน
เขาจะไปเตรียมหนทางให้กับท่าน”(A)
3 “มีเสียงร้องตะโกนของคนหนึ่งในที่เปล่าเปลี่ยวแห้งแล้งว่า
ให้เตรียมทางสำหรับองค์เจ้าชีวิต
และทำทางเดินนั้นให้ตรงสำหรับพระองค์”(B)
4 แล้วยอห์นคนทำพิธีจุ่มน้ำ มาปรากฏตัวในที่เปล่าเปลี่ยวแห้งแล้ง และสั่งสอนว่า “ให้กลับตัวกลับใจเสียใหม่และรับพิธีจุ่มน้ำ แล้วพระเจ้าจะยกโทษความผิดบาปของพวกคุณ” 5 คนทั่วแคว้นยูเดียและคนจากเมืองเยรูซาเล็มได้มาหายอห์นและสารภาพความบาปทั้งหลายของพวกเขา ยอห์นจึงทำพิธีจุ่มน้ำให้กับพวกเขาในแม่น้ำจอร์แดน 6 ยอห์นใส่เสื้อผ้าที่ทำจากขนอูฐ ใช้หนังสัตว์คาดเอว กินตั๊กแตนและน้ำผึ้งป่าเป็นอาหาร 7 ยอห์นประกาศว่า “จะมีคนหนึ่งมาทีหลังผม เขาจะยิ่งใหญ่กว่าผมมาก แม้แต่เชือกรองเท้าของเขา ผมยังไม่มีค่าพอที่จะก้มลงไปแก้ให้ 8 ผมทำพิธีจุ่มให้พวกคุณด้วยน้ำ แต่เขาคนนั้นจะจุ่มพวกคุณด้วยพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์”

2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way”[a](A)—
3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[b](B)
4 And so John the Baptist(C) appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance(D) for the forgiveness of sins.(E) 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist,(F) and he ate locusts(G) and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.(H) 8 I baptize you with[c] water, but he will baptize you with[d] the Holy Spirit.”(I)
