15 Joshua and his army let the men of Ai chase after them. They pretended to be afraid. They ran towards the desert. 16 The king told all the men who remained in the city to chase the Israelites. So they continued to chase after them, far away from their city. 17 No men remained in Ai or Bethel. They all chased after the Israelites. There was nobody left to keep the city safe.

15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back(A) before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.(B) 16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away(C) from the city. 17 Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel.
