John 1:26-28

²⁶John answered them, “I baptize [only] ^[a]in water, but among you there stands One whom you do not recognize and of whom you know nothing.^(A) ²⁷It is He [the preeminent One] who comes after me, the ^[b]strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie [even as His slave].” ²⁸These things occurred in Bethany across the Jordan [at the Jordan River crossing], where John was baptizing.

John 1:27 During this era it was customary for a household servant to remove a guest’s sandals and wash the dust from his feet. John is saying that he is not worthy even to remove Christ’s sandal, let alone to touch His feet.
