Mensaje acerca de Moab

48 Este es el mensaje que se dio con relación a Moab. Esto dice el Señor de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel:

«Qué aflicción le espera a la ciudad de Nebo;
    pronto quedará en ruinas.
La ciudad de Quiriataim será humillada y conquistada;
    la fortaleza será humillada y derribada.
2 Ya nunca más nadie se jactará de Moab,
    porque en Hesbón hay un complot para destruirla.
“Vengan—dicen—, haremos que nunca más sea una nación”.
    La ciudad de Madmena[a] también será silenciada;
    la espada te seguirá allí.
3 Oigan los gritos que vienen de Horonaim,
    gritos de devastación y gran destrucción.
4 Toda Moab está destruida;
    sus pequeños clamarán.[b]
5 Sus refugiados lloran amargamente
    mientras escalan las colinas de Luhit.
Gritan de terror
    mientras bajan la ladera a Horonaim.
6 ¡Huyan por su vida!
    ¡Escóndanse[c] en el desierto!
7 Puesto que ustedes confiaron en sus riquezas y habilidades,
    serán tomados cautivos.
¡Su dios Quemos, con sus sacerdotes y funcionarios,
    serán llevados a tierras distantes!

8 »Todas las ciudades serán destruidas
    y nadie escapará,
ni en las mesetas ni en los valles,
    porque el Señor así lo ha dicho.
9 Oh, si Moab tuviera alas
    para que volara lejos,[d]
porque sus ciudades quedarán abandonadas
    y nadie vivirá en ellas.
10 ¡Malditos los que se rehúsen a hacer el trabajo del Señor,
    los que retengan la espada del derramamiento de sangre!

11 »Desde sus comienzos, Moab ha vivido en paz;
    nunca ha ido al destierro.
Es como el vino que se ha dejado reposar.
    No ha sido vertida de botella en botella,
    por eso es fragante y suave.
12 Pero pronto se acerca el día—dice el Señor—,
    cuando enviaré hombres que la viertan de su vasija.
¡Verterán a Moab
    y luego destrozarán la vasija!
13 Por fin Moab se avergonzará de su ídolo Quemos,
    como el pueblo de Israel se avergonzó de su becerro de oro en Betel.[e]

14 »Ustedes solían jactarse: “Nosotros somos héroes,
    hombres valientes de guerra”.
15 Sin embargo, ahora Moab será destruida junto con sus ciudades.
    Sus jóvenes más prometedores son condenados a la masacre
    —dice el Rey, cuyo nombre es el Señor de los Ejércitos Celestiales—.
16 Pronto se acerca la destrucción de Moab;
    se avecina una calamidad amenazante.
17 ¡Amigos de Moab,
    lloren y lamenten por esta nación!
¡Miren cómo se ha quebrado el cetro fuerte,
    cómo se ha hecho pedazos el hermoso bastón!

18 »Bájense de su gloria
    y siéntense en el polvo, gente de Dibón,
porque los que destruyan a Moab también harán pedazos a Dibón.
    Ellos derribarán todas sus torres.
19 Habitantes de Aroer,
    párense junto al camino y observen.
Griten a los que huyen de Moab:
    “¿Qué sucedió allí?”.

20 »Y la contestación que reciben es:
“¡Moab queda en ruinas, deshonrada;
    lloren y giman!
Anúncienlo en las orillas del río Arnón:
    ¡Moab ha sido destruida!”.
21 Se derramó el juicio sobre las ciudades de la meseta,
    sobre Holón, Jahaza[f] y Mefaat,
22 sobre Dibón, Nebo y Bet-diblataim,
23     sobre Quiriataim, Bet-gamul y Bet-meón,
24 sobre Queriot y Bosra,
    todas las ciudades de Moab, lejanas y cercanas.

25 »El poder de Moab ha llegado a su fin.
    Su brazo ha sido quebrado—dice el Señor—.
26 Dejen que se tambalee y caiga como un borracho,
    porque se ha rebelado contra el Señor.
Moab se revolcará en su propio vómito
    y será ridiculizada por todos.
27 ¿No ridiculizaste tú a los israelitas?
    ¿Fueron ellos acaso sorprendidos en compañía de ladrones
    para que tú los desprecies como lo haces?

28 »Ustedes, habitantes de Moab,
    huyan de sus ciudades y vivan en cuevas.
Escóndanse como palomas que anidan
    en las hendiduras de las rocas.
29 Todos hemos oído de la soberbia de Moab,
    porque su orgullo es muy grande.
Sabemos de su orgullo altanero,
    de su arrogancia y de su corazón altivo.
30 Yo conozco su insolencia
    —dice el Señor—,
pero sus alardes están vacíos,
    tan vacíos como sus hechos.
31 Así que ahora gimo por Moab;
    de veras, me lamentaré por Moab.
    Mi corazón está quebrantado por los hombres de Kir-hareset.[g]

32 »Pueblo de Sibma, rico en viñedos,
    lloraré por ti aún más de lo que lloré por Jazer.
Tus extensas vides en otro tiempo llegaban hasta el mar Muerto,[h]
    ¡pero el destructor te ha dejado desnudo
    y cosechó tus uvas y frutos de verano!
33 El gozo y la alegría desaparecieron de la fructífera Moab;
    los lagares no producen vino.
Nadie pisa las uvas dando gritos de alegría.
    Hay gritos, sí, pero no de alegría.

34 »En cambio, se pueden oír terribles gritos de terror desde Hesbón hasta Eleale y Jahaza; desde Zoar hasta Horonaim y Eglat-selisiya. Incluso las aguas de Nimrim ya están secas.

35 »Acabaré con Moab—dice el Señor—, porque la gente ofrece sacrificios en los altares paganos y quema incienso a sus dioses falsos. 36 Mi corazón gime como una flauta por Moab y Kir-hareset porque ha desaparecido toda su riqueza. 37 La gente se rapa la cabeza y se afeita la barba en señal de luto. Se hacen cortaduras en las manos y se ponen ropa de tela áspera. 38 Hay llanto y dolor en cada hogar moabita y en cada calle. Pues hice pedazos a Moab como a una vasija vieja y despreciada. 39 ¡Cómo quedó hecha añicos! ¡Escuchen los lamentos! ¡Miren la vergüenza de Moab! Se ha vuelto objeto de burla, ejemplo de ruina para todos sus vecinos».

40 Esto dice el Señor:

«¡Miren! El enemigo cae en picada como un águila,
    desplegando sus alas sobre Moab.
41 Sus ciudades caerán
    y sus fortalezas serán tomadas.
Aun los guerreros más poderosos
    estarán en agonía como mujeres en trabajo de parto.
42 Moab ya no será más una nación
    porque se jactó ante el Señor.

43 »Terror, trampas y redes serán tu suerte,
    oh Moab—dice el Señor—.
44 Los que huyan en terror caerán en una trampa,
    y los que escapen de la trampa serán apresados por una red.
Me aseguraré de que no escapes
    porque ha llegado el tiempo de tu juicio
    —dice el Señor—.
45 Los habitantes huyen hasta Hesbón,
    pero no pueden continuar
porque sale fuego de Hesbón,
    la antigua casa de Sehón,
fuego que devora toda la tierra
    junto con toda su gente rebelde.

46 »¡Qué aflicción te espera, oh pueblo de Moab!
    ¡El pueblo del dios Quemos queda destruido!
Tus hijos y tus hijas fueron llevados cautivos.
47 Pero en los días venideros
    restableceré el bienestar de Moab.
    ¡Yo, el Señor, he hablado!».

A Message About Moab(A)

48 Concerning Moab:(B)

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“Woe to Nebo,(C) for it will be ruined.
    Kiriathaim(D) will be disgraced and captured;
    the stronghold[a] will be disgraced and shattered.
2 Moab will be praised(E) no more;
    in Heshbon[b](F) people will plot her downfall:
    ‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’(G)
You, the people of Madmen,[c] will also be silenced;
    the sword will pursue you.
3 Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,(H)
    cries of great havoc and destruction.
4 Moab will be broken;
    her little ones will cry out.[d]
5 They go up the hill to Luhith,(I)
    weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim(J)
    anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
6 Flee!(K) Run for your lives;
    become like a bush[e] in the desert.(L)
7 Since you trust in your deeds and riches,(M)
    you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh(N) will go into exile,(O)
    together with his priests and officials.(P)
8 The destroyer(Q) will come against every town,
    and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
    and the plateau(R) destroyed,
    because the Lord has spoken.
9 Put salt(S) on Moab,
    for she will be laid waste[f];(T)
her towns will become desolate,
    with no one to live in them.

10 “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
    A curse on anyone who keeps their sword(U) from bloodshed!(V)

11 “Moab has been at rest(W) from youth,
    like wine left on its dregs,(X)
not poured from one jar to another—
    she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
    and her aroma is unchanged.
12 But days are coming,”
    declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
    and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
    and smash her jars.
13 Then Moab will be ashamed(Y) of Chemosh,(Z)
    as Israel was ashamed
    when they trusted in Bethel.(AA)

14 “How can you say, ‘We are warriors,(AB)
    men valiant in battle’?
15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
    her finest young men(AC) will go down in the slaughter,(AD)”
    declares the King,(AE) whose name is the Lord Almighty.(AF)
16 “The fall of Moab is at hand;(AG)
    her calamity will come quickly.
17 Mourn for her, all who live around her,
    all who know her fame;(AH)
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,(AI)
    how broken the glorious staff!’

18 “Come down from your glory
    and sit on the parched ground,(AJ)
    you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,(AK)
for the one who destroys Moab
    will come up against you
    and ruin your fortified cities.(AL)
19 Stand by the road and watch,
    you who live in Aroer.(AM)
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
    ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
    Wail(AN) and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon(AO)
    that Moab is destroyed.
21 Judgment has come to the plateau(AP)—
    to Holon,(AQ) Jahzah(AR) and Mephaath,(AS)
22     to Dibon,(AT) Nebo(AU) and Beth Diblathaim,
23     to Kiriathaim,(AV) Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,(AW)
24     to Kerioth(AX) and Bozrah(AY)—
    to all the towns(AZ) of Moab, far and near.
25 Moab’s horn[g](BA) is cut off;
    her arm(BB) is broken,”
declares the Lord.

26 “Make her drunk,(BC)
    for she has defied(BD) the Lord.
Let Moab wallow in her vomit;(BE)
    let her be an object of ridicule.(BF)
27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?(BG)
    Was she caught among thieves,(BH)
that you shake your head(BI) in scorn(BJ)
    whenever you speak of her?
28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
    you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove(BK) that makes its nest
    at the mouth of a cave.(BL)

29 “We have heard of Moab’s pride(BM)—
    how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
    and the haughtiness(BN) of her heart.
30 I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
    “and her boasts(BO) accomplish nothing.
31 Therefore I wail(BP) over Moab,
    for all Moab I cry out,
    I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.(BQ)
32 I weep for you, as Jazer(BR) weeps,
    you vines of Sibmah.(BS)
Your branches spread as far as the sea[h];
    they reached as far as[i] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
    on your ripened fruit and grapes.
33 Joy and gladness are gone
    from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine(BT) from the presses;
    no one treads them with shouts of joy.(BU)
Although there are shouts,
    they are not shouts of joy.

34 “The sound of their cry rises
    from Heshbon(BV) to Elealeh(BW) and Jahaz,(BX)
from Zoar(BY) as far as Horonaim(BZ) and Eglath Shelishiyah,
    for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.(CA)
35 In Moab I will put an end
    to those who make offerings on the high places(CB)
    and burn incense(CC) to their gods,”
declares the Lord.
36 “So my heart laments(CD) for Moab like the music of a pipe;
    it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.(CE)
    The wealth they acquired(CF) is gone.
37 Every head is shaved(CG)
    and every beard(CH) cut off;
every hand is slashed
    and every waist is covered with sackcloth.(CI)
38 On all the roofs in Moab
    and in the public squares(CJ)
there is nothing but mourning,
    for I have broken Moab
    like a jar(CK) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
39 “How shattered(CL) she is! How they wail!
    How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,(CM)
    an object of horror to all those around her.”

40 This is what the Lord says:

“Look! An eagle is swooping(CN) down,
    spreading its wings(CO) over Moab.
41 Kerioth[j](CP) will be captured
    and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors(CQ)
    will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(CR)
42 Moab will be destroyed(CS) as a nation(CT)
    because she defied(CU) the Lord.
43 Terror(CV) and pit and snare(CW) await you,
    you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.
44 “Whoever flees(CX) from the terror
    will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
    will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
    the year(CY) of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
    the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
    a blaze from the midst of Sihon;(CZ)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
    the skulls(DA) of the noisy boasters.
46 Woe to you, Moab!(DB)
    The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
    and your daughters into captivity.

47 “Yet I will restore(DC) the fortunes of Moab
    in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

Here ends the judgment on Moab.
