Then they set out, and the terror of God(A) fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.(B)

Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz(C) (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.(D) There he built an altar,(E) and he called the place El Bethel,[a](F) because it was there that God revealed himself to him(G) when he was fleeing from his brother.(H)

Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse,(I) died and was buried under the oak(J) outside Bethel.(K) So it was named Allon Bakuth.[b]

After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,[c](L) God appeared to him again and blessed him.(M) 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,[d] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.[e](N) So he named him Israel.

11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty[f];(O) be fruitful and increase in number.(P) A nation(Q) and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.(R)

God appeared[c] to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; (D)no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but (E)Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. 11 And God said to him, (F)“I am God Almighty:[d] be (G)fruitful and multiply.
