Een heilig leven leiden

Christus heeft dus als mens voor ons geleden. Daarom moeten jullie zelf ook bereid zijn om net als Hij te lijden. Want als je in dit leven hebt geleden, doe je niet meer mee met het kwaad.[a] Zo hoef je de rest van de tijd die je nog op aarde leeft niet meer te luisteren naar de verlangens van je oude 'ik'. Je kan nu leven zoals God het wil. Want in de tijd dat jullie er nog op los leefden, hebben jullie genoeg tijd verspild met het doen van wat de ongelovigen graag doen. Jullie deden wat jullie wilden. Dat waren allerlei walgelijke dingen. Jullie werden dronken, deden op het gebied van seks alles waar jullie maar zin in hadden, hielden wilde feesten, dienden allerlei walgelijke afgoden. De ongelovigen vinden het vreemd dat jullie daar nu niet meer aan meedoen. Daarom zeggen ze nu lelijke dingen van jullie. Op een dag zal God hen daarvoor straffen. Binnenkort zal Hij rechtspreken. Niet alleen over de levenden, maar ook over de doden. Daarom is ook aan de doden het goede nieuws verteld.[b] Toen ze vroeger op aarde leefden, zijn ze veroordeeld voor wat ze deden. Maar door het goede nieuws zal nu hun geest voor God kunnen leven.

Het einde van alle dingen komt al bijna. Wees dus verstandig en houd je hoofd erbij. En blijf vooral bidden. Maar het belangrijkste is dat jullie als broeders en zusters veel van elkaar houden.[c] Want de liefde vergeeft wat jullie verkeerd tegen elkaar doen. Wees gastvrij voor elkaar, zonder te mopperen. 10 Dien elkaar met de gaven die God uit liefde aan ieder van jullie heeft gegeven. Want dat is waarvoor God al die soorten gaven gegeven heeft.[d] 11 Als je iets zegt, zorg er dan voor dat je net zo spreekt als God Zelf zou doen. Als je dient, doe dat dan vanuit de kracht die God geeft. Want dan zal in alles God worden geprezen, dankzij Jezus Christus. Alle macht en eer is voor Jezus Christus, tot in alle eeuwigheid! Amen! Zo is het!

Lijden voor Christus

12 Lieve broeders en zusters, wees er niet verbaasd over als jullie grote moeilijkheden zullen meemaken. Want dat is helemaal niet vreemd. De duivel zal proberen om jullie geloof te vernietigen. 13 Maar jullie mogen er juist blij over zijn dat jullie net als Christus moeten lijden. Want straks zal Hij ook zijn blijdschap met jullie delen als Hij terugkomt in zijn hemelse macht en majesteit.

14 Het is heerlijk als de mensen lelijke dingen van jullie zeggen omdat jullie in Christus geloven. Want dat betekent dat Gods Geest op jullie is. Want zíj beledigen Hem wel, maar júllie eren Hem daarmee juist. 15 Maar zorg ervoor dat niemand van jullie hoeft te lijden omdat hij een moordenaar, een dief, een schurk of een bemoeial is. 16 Maar als je lijdt omdat je christen bent, hoef je je daar niet voor te schamen. Dan mag je God eren met die naam.

17 Want in deze tijd begint God de mensen te reinigen van het kwaad. En het huisgezin van God komt het eerst aan de beurt. Maar als het begint bij ons, wat zal er dan gebeuren met de mensen die niet naar het goede nieuws van God hebben willen luisteren? 18 Als de mensen die leven zoals God het wil al amper worden gered, wat zal er dan gebeuren met de mensen die zich niets van God aantrekken? 19 Als je dus moet lijden omdat je leeft zoals God het wil, blijf dan helemaal op Hem vertrouwen. Hij heeft jou gemaakt en laat jou nooit in de steek. En blijf het goede doen.

So, since Christ suffered[a] in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin,[b] in that he spends the rest of his time[c] on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires. For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians[d] desire.[e] You lived then[f] in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts,[g] and wanton idolatries.[h] So[i] they are astonished[j] when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.[k] They will face a reckoning before[l] Jesus Christ[m] who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. Now it was for this very purpose[n] that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead,[o] so that though[p] they were judged in the flesh[q] by human standards[r] they may live spiritually[s] by God’s standards.[t]

Service, Suffering, and Judgment

For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer.[u] Above all keep[v] your love for one another fervent,[w] because love covers a multitude of sins.[x] Show hospitality[y] to one another without complaining. 10 Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another[z] as good stewards of the varied grace of God. 11 Whoever speaks, let it be with[aa] God’s words.[ab] Whoever serves, do so with the strength[ac] that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong[ad] the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

12 Dear friends, do not be astonished[ae] that a trial by fire is occurring among you,[af] as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed[ag] you may also rejoice and be glad.[ah] 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory,[ai] who is the Spirit of God,[aj] rests[ak] on you. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.[al] 16 But if you suffer as a Christian,[am] do not be ashamed, but glorify[an] God that you bear such a name.[ao] 17 For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house[ap] of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate[aq] of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God? 18 And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of[ar] the ungodly and sinners?[as] 19 So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good.[at]

  1. 1 Peter 4:1 tc Most mss (א2 A P 5 33 81 436 442 1175 1611 1852 M) add ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν (huper hēmōn, “for us”); others (א* 69 1505 syp) add ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν (huper humōn, “for you”), the first hand of א also has ἀποθανόντος (apothanontos, “since he died”) instead of παθόντος (pathontos, “since he suffered”). But the reading without ὑπὲρ ἡ/ὑμῶν best explains the rise of the other readings, for not only is there confusion as to which pronoun belongs here, but the longer readings, being clarifications, are evidently scribally motivated. The shortest reading is found in significant and early witnesses (P72 B C Ψ 323 1243 1739 sa) and is strongly preferred.
  2. 1 Peter 4:1 sn Has finished with sin. The last sentence in v. 1 may refer to Christ as the one who suffered in the flesh (cf. 2:21, 23; 3:18; 4:1a) and the latter part would then mean, “he has finished dealing with sin.” But it is more likely that it refers to the Christian who suffers unjustly (cf. 2:19-20; 3:14, 17). This shows that he has made a break with sin as vs. 2 describes.
  3. 1 Peter 4:2 tn This verse may give the purpose or result of their “arming” themselves as called for in v. 1b and then the translation would be: “so that you may spend the rest of your time…” But it is better to take it as explanatory of the last phrase in v. 1: what it means to be finished with sin.

It clearly does not assume a second chance for conversion offered to unbelievers who had died; why would Peter urge people to suffer in this life for the sake of the gospel if he believed that mercy would be extended to all the dead in the hereafter (cf. 2:7-8; 4:1-5, 12-19)?

改变生活

既然耶稣在肉体上遭受了痛苦,那么你们就应该用耶稣的意志去武装自己。因为在肉体上受难的人已跟罪恶绝缘了, 以便在尘世余下的光阴里不再顺从人类肉体的欲望,而是去执行上帝的意旨。 过去你们把很多的光阴浪费在异教徒喜好的事情上了,你们沉湎于声色、纵欲,酗酒、淫佚的宴乐、狂饮和可恶的偶像崇拜之中。 现在,当你们不再与他们同流合污,过那种放荡的生活了,他们感到很惊讶,于是便诋毁你们。 这些人必须就他们的行为向审判活人和死人的基督作出交待。 为此,福音传给死人,因为他们也要像所有的人一样,为他们在世时所做的事情受到审判。福音传给了他们,以便他们在灵里能够像上帝那样生活。

做一个上帝恩赐的好管家

万物的终结已经临近,所以要谨慎、自持,以便有助于你们的祷告。 最重要的是,彼此要深深地相爱,因为爱能掩盖众多的罪恶。 要毫无怨言地彼此敞开家门。 10 你们每个人要像上帝各种恩赐的好管家那样,按照各自领受到的才能为彼此服务。 11 宣讲的人,应该宣讲上帝的话,服务的人,应该用上帝赐予的力量去服务,通过耶稣基督,在一切事物中把荣誉归于上帝。愿荣耀与力量永远属于他,阿们。

为跟随基督而受难

12 亲爱的朋友们,不要为发生在你们中间的烈火般的严峻考验感到惊讶,仿佛遇到了不寻常的事似的。 13 相反,你们应该以分担耶稣的苦难而感到幸福,这样在基督显示出他的荣耀时,你们就会幸福快乐。 14 如果因为你们是基督的信徒而受到侮辱,你们是有福的,因为上帝荣耀的圣灵与你们同在。 15 你们不应该做为凶手、窃贼、罪犯或好管闲事者而遭殃。 16 如果你们有谁做为基督徒而受难,他不应该感到羞愧,他应该为承受了基督徒的名字而赞美上帝。 17 因为审判的时刻已经开始,上帝的家庭成员最先受到审判。如果这审判先从我们开始,那么,不遵守上帝福音的人会有什么结局呢? 18 好人得救尚不容易,那么不虔诚的人和罪人又会怎样呢? 19 所以,遵照上帝的旨意而受难的人,应该把他们的生命托付给他们的创造者上帝,并应该继续行善。
