28 1-2 そこがマルタと呼ばれる島であることは、すぐにわかりました。島民はとても親切で、雨と寒さでぶるぶる震えていた私たちを暖めようと、浜辺でたき火をしてくれました。
3 パウロが一かかえの木切れをたばねて火にくべると、熱気でまむしがはい出し、手に巻きつきました。 4 島の人たちは、まむしがぶらさがっているのを見て、「きっと人殺しなんだよ。海からは助かっても、正義の女神がお見のがしにはならないんだ」と、ひそひそささやき合いました。
5 ところがパウロは、平気な顔でまむしを火の中に払い落とし、ぴんぴんしています。 6 人々は、今にもはれ上がるか、突然倒れて死ぬのではないかと、息をひそめていました。しかし、いくらたっても、いっこうに何も起こりません。今度は、人々はパウロを神だと考えるようになりました。
7 この浜辺の近くに、島の首長ポプリオの領地がありました。首長は私たちを招き、三日間も親切にもてなしてくれました。 8 ところが、ポプリオの父が高熱と赤痢で苦しんでいるというので、パウロが行って、彼のために祈り、手を置いて治してやりました。 9 これを聞くと、島中の病人がぞくぞくと詰めかけ、みんな治してもらいました。 10 それで彼らは、私たちを非常に尊敬し、また出帆の時には、旅に必要なあらゆる品物を、船に積み込んでくれました。
11 難破してから三か月後、今度は、この島で越冬していた、アレキサンドリヤの「ふたごの兄弟号」という船に乗り込むことになりました。 12 最初の寄港地はシラクサで、三日間停泊し、 13 そこからずっと遠回りしてレギオンに行きました。一日すると南風が吹き始めたので、翌日には、順調にポテオリまで進むことができました。 14 そこで数名のクリスチャンに出会い、勧められるままに七日間世話になってから、ローマに向かいました。
15 私たちのことを聞いて、ローマのクリスチャンたちは、わざわざ、アピア街道のポロまで迎えに来てくれました。トレス・タベルネという所で落ち合う人たちもいました。パウロがこの人たちに会えたことを神に感謝し、勇気づけられたことは言うまでもありません。
ついにローマに
16 ローマに着くと、パウロは、兵士の監視のもとではありましたが、好きな所に住んでもよいことになりました。 17 到着して三日後には、パウロは地元のユダヤ人の指導者たちを呼び集め、話をしました。「皆さん。私はだれに危害を加えたわけでもなく、先祖の慣習を破った覚えもないのに、エルサレムでユダヤ人につかまり、訴えられて、ローマ政府の手に渡されました。 18 取り調べの結果、いったんは釈放と決まりました。ユダヤ人の指導者たちが主張するような、死刑にあたる罪は認められなかったからです。 19 ところが、ユダヤ人がこの決定に異議を申し立てたのです。同胞を訴えるつもりは少しもありませんが、やむをえずカイザルに上訴しました。 20 今日、皆さん方をお招きしたのは、お近づきになりたかったからです。また、私が捕らわれの身であるのは、メシヤ（救い主）が来られたと信じているためだと、わかっていただきたかったからです。」
21 ユダヤ人たちは答えました。「私たちは、あなたのことは何も聞いていません。ユダヤから手紙も来ていませんし、エルサレムから来た人たちからも、そのような報告は受けていません。 22 私たちは、あなたの信じていることを、あなたの口からお聞きしたいのです。クリスチャンについて知っていることと言えば、彼らが至る所で非難の的だということだけなのです。」
23 彼らはこうして日を決め、さらに大ぜいでパウロの家に来ました。パウロは彼らに神の国のことを語り、またモーセの律法から預言者の書に至るまで、聖書のありとあらゆる箇所を使って、イエスのことを教えました。彼の話は、朝から夕方まで続きました。
24 信じる人もいれば、信じない人もいました。 25 しかし、さまざまなことを言い合いながら去る彼らの耳には、いつまでも、パウロの最後のことばが響いていました。「聖霊が預言者イザヤを通してお語りになったことは正しかったのです。
26 『ユダヤ人に告げよ。
「あなたがたは聞くには聞くが理解しない。
見るには見るが認めない。
27 心は肥えて鈍くなり、
耳も遠く、目も閉じられている。
見もせず、聞きもせず、理解もしない。
わたしに立ち返って、いやされようともしない。」』（イザヤ6・9-10）
28-29 だから、よく覚えておきなさい。神のこの救いは、外国人に与えられました。彼らはこの救いを受け入れるでしょう。」
30 パウロはそれからまる二年の間、借家に住み、訪れる人たちを歓迎し、 31 大胆に神の国と主イエス・キリストのことを語りました。それを妨げる者はだれもいませんでした。

28 無事に陸に上がった時、この島が📍マルタ島だと私たちは知った。 2 そこに住んでいた人たちはとても親切だった。雨が降っていてとても寒かったので、彼らは火を焚いて私たち全員を歓迎してくれた。 3 パウロは火を燃やすための枝を集めた。彼が枝を火の上に置いていると、熱のアツさにつられて毒ヘビが現れ、パウロの手に噛みついた。 4 島に住む人たちはパウロの手にぶら下がった毒ヘビを見て、こう言った。「この男は絶対に殺人犯だ！海では死ななかったが、正義の女神が生きることを許さなかったのだ！」
5 しかし、パウロはヘビを火の中に振り落とすと何のケガもしていなかった。 6 人々は、パウロの手が腫れ上がって倒れてしまうのではないかと思った。島の住民は長い間パウロの容体を伺い経過を見ていたが、何も悪いことが起こらなかった。すると、彼らの意見がコロっと変わり、彼らはこう言ったのだ。「彼は神様だ！」
7 同じ地域の周辺にはいくつかの所有地があった。その所有地は島で最も重要なローマ人の役人であるポプリオと呼ばれる男の土地だった。彼は私たちを家に迎え入れてくれた。そこで私たちは3日間滞在し、彼は私たちにとても良くしてくれた。 8 ポプリオの父親は発熱と赤痢があったが、パウロは彼のところへ行き、彼のために祈った。パウロは男に手を置くと男は癒された。 9 これが起きた後、島にいた他の全ての病人はパウロのところにやって来ると、パウロは彼らを癒した。
10-11 島の人々は私たちに多くの敬意を示してくれた。そして、3ヵ月間滞在した後、出発の準備が整うと島の住民たちは私たちの旅に必要な全てを提供してくれた。
ローマへ
冬の間、マルタ島に船をつけていたアレキサンドリヤ発の造船に私たちは乗り込んだ。船の正面には双子の神々の像が付いていた。 12 その船で📍シラクサの都市に立ち寄り、私たちはそこに3日間滞在した。その後、再び出発した。 13 そして、私たちは📍レギオンの都市にやってきた。翌日、南西から風が吹き始めたので、船を出航させることができた。次の日、私たちは📍ポテオリの都市にやって来た。 14 そこで何人かの信じる仲間たちを見つけると、彼らは私たちに1週間そこに滞在するように頼んできた。そしてついに！私たちは📍ローマに到着したのだ。 15 ローマの兄弟、姉妹が私たちのことを聞きつけ、アピオ街道のポロ市場まで会いにやって来てくれた。パウロはこの信じる仲間たちを見て、神に感謝し、勇気づけられた。

16 私たちがローマに来ると、パウロは1人で暮らすことを許されていた。しかし、彼の家には彼を守るための兵士が彼を警備していた。
17 3日後・・・パウロはユダヤ人指導者の何人かを呼び集め、パウロはこう言った。「私の兄弟たちよ、私は自分たちの人々にも対しても、または父親の習慣に対しても何ひとつ反したことはしておりません。しかし、私はエルサレムで捕まり、ローマ人に引き渡されたのです。 18 彼らは私に多くの取り調べをしましたが、私が死刑に値する理由を何ひとつ見つけることができませんでした。そこで、彼らは私を釈放したかったのですが、 19 そこにいたユダヤ人たちは、それを望まなかったのです。そのため、私はカイザル皇帝の前で裁判を受けるためにローマに行くことを要求したのです。だからといって、自分の同胞たちが何か悪いことをしたと責めたてるつもりはありません。 20 私はあなた方に会って話をしたかったのです。イスラエルの希望を信じているがゆえに、私はこの鎖に縛られています」
21 ユダヤ人たちはパウロに答えた。「我々はあなたについてユダヤ地方から手紙を受け取っていません。また、そこを旅してきた我々の国民からも、あなたについての知らせや、あなたの悪い知らせを伝えられたことがありません。 22 我々はあなたの考えを聞きたいのです。世界中の人たちがこの新しいグループに対して反論していることを知っています」
23 パウロと指導者たちは集会を行う日程を選んだ。その当日、さらに多くのユダヤ人がパウロの家に集まって来た。そして1日中パウロは彼らに語り、神の王国についての説明をした。彼はモーセの掟と預言者の書を使って、イエスを信じるようにと説得したのだ。 24 彼らの何人かはパウロが言ったことを信じたが、他の何人かは信じなかった。 25 こうして、集会はみんながお互いに同意することなく終了したのだ。しかし、彼らが去る前にパウロは彼らにもう1つ、これを言った。「聖霊は預言者イザヤを通して、あなた方の先祖に真理を語りました。
26 『この人たちのところに行って、彼らに伝えるんだ。
あなたは聞いて、また聞くが、
理解はしません。
あなたは見て、また見るが、
見るものを理解しません。
27 この人たちは理解することができません。
彼らの耳はふさがり、
彼らの目は閉じられています。
だから、彼らは自分の目で見ることも、
耳で聞くことも、
頭で理解することもできません。
彼らが理解すれば、彼らはわたしに目を向けて、

30 パウロは自分の借りていた家に2年間住んだ。そこで彼を訪ねに来る人たちみんなをパウロは歓迎した。 31 パウロは彼らへ神の王国についての話しをし、王であるイエス・キリストについて教えた。彼はとても大胆に教えていたので、誰も彼の話しを止める者はいなかった。

Paul Ashore on Malta
28 Once safely on shore, we(A) found out that the island(B) was called Malta. 2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. 3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand,(C) they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.”(D) 5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.(E) 6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.(F)
7 There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and showed us generous hospitality for three days. 8 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer,(G) placed his hands on him(H) and healed him.(I) 9 When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. 10 They honored us(J) in many ways; and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.
Paul’s Arrival at Rome
11 After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island—it was an Alexandrian ship(K) with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux. 12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days. 13 From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli. 14 There we found some brothers and sisters(L) who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome. 15 The brothers and sisters(M) there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these people Paul thanked God and was encouraged. 16 When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.(N)

17 Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders.(O) When they had assembled, Paul said to them: “My brothers,(P) although I have done nothing against our people(Q) or against the customs of our ancestors,(R) I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. 18 They examined me(S) and wanted to release me,(T) because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death.(U) 19 The Jews objected, so I was compelled to make an appeal to Caesar.(V) I certainly did not intend to bring any charge against my own people. 20 For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel(W) that I am bound with this chain.”(X)
21 They replied, “We have not received any letters from Judea concerning you, and none of our people(Y) who have come from there has reported or said anything bad about you. 22 But we want to hear what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking against this sect.”(Z)
23 They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God,(AA) and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets(AB) he tried to persuade them about Jesus.(AC) 24 Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.(AD) 25 They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said(AE) through Isaiah the prophet:
26 “‘Go to this people and say,
“You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”
27 For this people’s heart has become calloused;(AF)
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a](AG)
28 “Therefore I want you to know that God’s salvation(AH) has been sent to the Gentiles,(AI) and they will listen!” [29] [b]
30 For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. 31 He proclaimed the kingdom of God(AJ) and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness(AK) and without hindrance!

28 And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.
2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.
8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.
9 So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:
10 Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.
11 And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.
12 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.
13 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:
14 Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.
15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.
16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.
17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.
19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.
20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.
22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.
24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,
31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
