約束の聖霊が下る
2 さて、イエスの死と復活から、七週間が過ぎました。五旬節（ユダヤ教の祭りの一つ）の日のことです。信者たちが一堂に集まっていると、 2 突然、天からものすごい音がしました。まるで、激しい風が吹きつけるような音です。それが、家全体にごうごうと響き渡ったのです。 3 そして、めらめら燃える炎の舌のようなものが現れ、みなの頭上にとどまりました。 4 するとどうでしょう。その場にいた人たちは、みな聖霊に満たされ、知りもしない外国語で話し始めたではありませんか。聖霊が、それだけの力を与えてくださったのです。
5 その日エルサレムには、たくさんの敬虔なユダヤ人が、祭りのために、世界のあちこちから集まっていました。 6 この大音響に、人々はいったい何事かと駆けつけましたが、弟子たちの話していることばを聞いて、すっかり面食らってしまいました。まぎれもなく自分たちの国のことばだったからです。
7 人々には、さっぱり訳がわかりません。ただ口々に、こう言い合うばかりでした。「こんなことってあるだろうか。みんなガリラヤ出身の人だというのに、 8 私たちの国のことばですらすら話している。 9 ここには、パルテヤ人、メジヤ人、エラム人、またメソポタミヤ、ユダヤ、カパドキヤ、ポント、アジヤ、 10 フルギヤ、パンフリヤ、エジプト、それにリビヤのクレネ語が使われている地方などから来た人たちがいるし、ほかにも、ローマからの旅行者で、もともとのユダヤ人もいれば、ユダヤ教への改宗者もいる。 11 それに、クレテ人やアラビヤ人もいる。それがどうだ。それぞれの出身地のことばで、神のすばらしい奇跡の話を聞くとは……。」
12 人々はただ呆然として、「いったい、どうなっているのだ」と顔を見合わせました。
13 しかし中には、「何、彼らは酔っぱらっているだけさ」と、あざける者たちもいました。
14 するとペテロが、十一人の使徒と共につかつかと進み出て、声を張り上げ、人々に語りかけました。「よそから来られた方も、エルサレムに住んでおられる皆さんも、どうぞお聞きください。 15 皆さんの中には、私たちが酒に酔っているのだとおっしゃる方もいますが、そんなことはありません。酒に酔うには時間が早すぎます。朝の九時から酒を飲む人はいないでしょう。 16 いま見ていることは、何世紀も前に、まさに預言者ヨエルが預言したことなのです。
17 『神は言われる。
終わりの日に、
わたしはすべての人にわたしの霊を注ぐ。
その時、あなたがたの息子、娘は預言し、
青年は幻を見、
老人は夢を見る。
18 聖霊は、男女を問わず、わたしに仕える者たちに
注がれる。
すると、彼らは預言をする。
19 また、わたしは天と地に不思議なしるしを現す。
血と火と煙の雲だ。
20 主の恐るべき日が来る前に、
太陽は暗くなり、月は血のように赤くなる。
21 しかし、主にあわれみを求める者はみな、
あわれみを受けて救われる。』（ヨエル2・28-32）
22 ああ、皆さん。これから申し上げることを聞いてください。よくご存じのように、ナザレのイエスは、あなたがたの前で、力ある奇跡を行われました。神様はそれによって、だれにもはっきりわかるように、イエス様の身元を保証なさったのです。 23 神様はあらかじめ計画したとおり、この方を、あなたがたの手でローマ政府に引き渡し、十字架で処刑することをお許しになりました。 24 そうした上で、この方を死の苦しみから解放し、復活させたのです。この方が、ずっと死んだままでいることなど、ありえないことだからです。
25 ダビデ王は、イエス様のことをこう言っています。
『主はいつも私と共におられる。
主が私を助け、
神の大きな力が私を支える。
26 だから、心は喜びにあふれ、
私の舌は主をほめたたえる。
たとい死んでも、私には望みがある。
27 あなたは、私のたましいを地獄に放置せず、
あなたの聖なる息子の体を、
朽ち果てさせることもない。
28 私を生き返らせ、
あなたの前で、すばらしい喜びにあふれさせる。』（詩篇16・8-11）
29 愛する皆さん。考えてください。ダビデはここで、自分のことを語っているわけではありません。そうでしょう。ダビデは死んで葬られ、その墓は今でも、ちゃんと残っているではありませんか。 30 しかし、彼は預言者でしたから、自分の子孫の一人がメシヤ（ヘブル語で、救い主）となり、ダビデの王座につくと神が誓われたことを知っていたのです。 31 それで、遠い将来を望み見ながら、メシヤの復活を預言しました。メシヤのたましいは地獄に放置されず、その体が朽ち果てることもない、と語ったのです。 32 そのとおり、神様はイエスを復活させました。私たちはみな、そのことの証人です。
33 いまイエス様は、天で最も栄誉ある神の右の座についておられます。そして、約束どおり、父なる神は聖霊を送ってくださいました。その結果、たった今、あなたがたが見聞きしたことが起こったのです。
34-35 ダビデは、決して自分のことを言ったのではありません。ダビデは天にのぼったことはないからです。それに、当のダビデがこうも言っています。
『神は私の主に言われた。
「わたしがあなたの敵を
完全に征服するまで、
わたしの右に座っていなさい。」』（詩篇110・1）
36 ですから、イスラエルのすべての人に、はっきり言っておきます。神様が主とし、キリスト（ギリシャ語で、救い主）とされたイエスを、あなたがたは十字架につけたのです。」
37 ペテロのことばは、人々の心を強く打ちました。「それでは、私たちはどうすればいいのでしょう。」あちらからもこちらからも、使徒たちへの質問の声があがりました。
38 ペテロは答えました。「一人一人、罪の生活から悔い改めて神に立ち返りなさい。そして、罪を赦していただくために、イエス・キリストの名によってバプテスマ（洗礼）を受けなさい。そうすれば、聖霊という賜物をいただけます。 39 それはキリストが約束してくださったことです。あなたがたは言うまでもなく、あなたがたの子孫、また遠くにいても、私たちの神である主がお招きになったすべての人に与えられるのです。」
40 このあとも、ペテロの説教はえんえんと続きました。イエスのことや、悪に満ちたこの時代から救われなければならないことを、ことばを尽くして訴えたのです。 41 この日、ペテロの言うことを信じた人はバプテスマを受けましたが、その数は全部で三千人ほどでした。 42 彼らは、使徒たちの教えをよく守り、聖餐式（パンと杯によりキリストの体と血の祝福にあずかる、キリスト教の礼典の一つ）や祈り会に加わっていました。
43 だれもが心から神を恐れ敬うようになり、また、使徒たちは次々と奇跡を行いました。 44 信者たちはみないっしょにいて、それぞれの持ち物を分け合い、 45 必要がある人には、財産を売り払って与えました。 46 毎日、神殿で礼拝をし、聖餐の時は、少人数に分かれてめいめいの家に集まり、心から喜びと感謝にあふれて食事を共にし、 47 心から神を賛美しました。彼らは町中の人に好感をもたれ、神も、救われる人を毎日、仲間に加えてくださいました。

聖霊がやってくる
2 五旬祭の日が来た時、彼らはみんな1つの場所に集っていた。 2 そんな時、グォォォオッッ・・・ゴトゴトゴト・・・ガタガタガタ・・・地面が割れんばかりの激しい風のような音が天から鳴り始めた。その音は、彼らが座っていた家の中全体に響き渡った。 3 すると、彼らは舌の形をした炎のようなものを見た。炎はそれぞれに分かれていき、そこにいる1人1人の上に留まった。 4 すると、そこにいた誰もが聖霊に満たされ、違う言葉で話し始めた。聖霊がその力を彼らに与えたのだ。
5 その時、多くのユダヤ人が故郷へと帰って来ていた。世界中から都エルサレムに集まってきていた人々は、とても宗教的な人たちだった。 6 彼らはものすごい音を聞き、その場所にたくさんの人が集まってきた。彼らがそこで聞いたのは、なんと彼らの母国語だった。
7 彼らはこれを聞いて驚いた。彼らにはそれがどのようにして起きているのかわからなかったのだ。彼らは言った。「見てください・・・彼らは全員ガリラヤ人ですよ。 8 しかし、彼らの間からは私たちの母国語が聞こえます。こんなことってありえますか？私たちはみんな出身が違うんですよ。 9 パルテヤ人、メジヤ人、エラム人、またメソポタミヤ、ユダヤ、カパドキヤ、ポント、アジア、 10 フルギヤ、パンフィリア、エジプト、クレネの都に近いリビア地方に住む人たち、それから首都ローマ、 11 クレタ人、アラビヤ人。私たちの中の何人かはユダヤ人として生まれ、何人かはユダヤ人のように神をたたえることを選びました。私たちは全員違う国の出身にも関わらず、彼らからは私たちの母国語が聞こえていますよ！神が今までになされた、素晴らしいことについての話が私たちにも理解することができています」
12 人々はその凄さに圧倒されながらも、一方で混乱していた。彼らはお互いに言いあった。「これはいったいどういうことですか？」 13 しかし、他の人たちは使徒たちに対して笑いながら、彼らはただワインを飲みすぎて酔っているんだろうと言ったのだ。
ペテロは人々に語った
14 すると、ペテロが他の11人の使徒たちと立ち上がり、全員に聞こえるような大きな声で話しはじめた。「ユダヤ人の兄弟たち！またエルサレムに住むみなさん、よく聞いてください！あなた方が知っておくべきことをお伝えします。 15 あなた方は、この人たち全員が酔っ払ってると思っているかもしれない！でも、そうではない！今はまだ朝の9時だ。 16 そして、このことについて預言者ヨエルは今日、ここでいったい何が起こっているのかを書き残している。これが彼が書いたことだ。
17 『神は言われる。
わたしは終わりの日、わたしの霊を全ての人に注ぐ。
お前たちの息子や娘は預言をはじめ、
青年は聖なる幻を見て、
老人は特別な夢を見る。
18 その時、わたしはわたしの霊を注ぐ。
仕える男と女の全てに霊を注ぐ。
そして、彼らは預言をする。
19 わたしは天で奇跡を起こし、
それが神秘のしるしとして地上に舞い降りる。
そこでは血と炎、そして立ちこめる煙を見ることになる。
20 太陽の光は暗くなり、
月は血のように赤くなる。
これらは、王である神が来られる栄光の日の前に起きる。
21 そして、王である神は、助けを求める全ての者を救う！』
22 イスラエルのみなさん、私が言っていることをよく聞いてくれ！神がナザレ村のイエスを私たちのもとへ送ってくれた！イエスはその証拠として、人知を超えた数々の奇跡を起こしてくれた。そのことを実際に見聞きしてきた、みなさんだからこそ、私が言っていることが本当だとわかるはずだ！ 23 イエスはあなた方に渡され、あなた方はイエスを殺した。私たちの掟をなんとも思っていないローマ人たちの手を借り、イエスを十字架につけたのだ。だが、神はこうなることを全て知っていた。ずっと前から神によって立てられた計画だったのだ。 24 イエスは死の苦しみを味わったが、神は死から彼を復活させて自由にした。死が彼を押さえつけることなんてできないのだ。 25 ダビデ王は彼について、こう言った！
『♪神が共にいることを、決して忘れはしない。
彼はすぐ側にいるからこそ、害が及ぶことはない。
26 だから、私は幸せを感じ、喜びの歌を歌う！
私の弱い体にも希望がある。
27 なぜなら、神は私を墓に置いていかない。
あなたの忠実な召使いの体をそこで腐らせない。
28 あなたは私にいのちの道を示してくれた。
あなたと一緒にいると、私は喜びで満たされる』
29 兄弟たちよ、私たちの偉大な先祖であるダビデについて断言できることがある。それは、彼は死に、埋葬され、彼の墓は今もここにあるということだ。 30 ダビデは預言者であり、彼は神が何を言っているかを知っていた。神はダビデに約束した。それは、彼の家系から生まれる者が王としてダビデの王座に座るということを。 31 ダビデは何が起きるのかを分かっていたからこそ、その将来の王について彼はこう言っている。
『♪彼は墓に残されなかった。
彼の体はそこで腐らなかった』
ダビデは救い主が死から復活することについて語っていた。 32 だから、イエスは神が復活させた方なのだ。私たちはみんなこのことについての証人であり、それをこの目で見たのだ。 33 イエスは天に引き上げられ、今、彼は神の右の座にいる。天の父が約束したように、神はイエスに聖霊を与えた。そこでイエスは今、私たちにその聖霊を注いでくれたのだ。これこそあなたが先ほど見たことであり、聞いたことなのだ。 34 ダビデ自身が天に引き上げられたのではない。ダビデ自身はこう言った。
『♪王である神が私の王に言った。
私の右側に座れ、
35 あなたの敵をあなたの支配下に置くまで』
36 だからこそ、イスラエルの人々は全員知るべきなのだ。神がイエスを王とし、救い主としたのだ。そして、その彼をあなた方は十字架にかけてしまったのだ！」
37 人々はこれを聞いて、罪悪感から深い悲しみと後悔を感じた。彼らはペテロと他の使徒たちに聞いた。「兄弟よ、では、私たちはどうしたらいいんですか？」
38 ペテロは彼らに言われた。「心と生き方を変えて、1人1人イエス・キリストの名によって洗礼を受けるんだ。そうすれば、神はあなた方の過ちを赦し、あなた方は聖霊である贈り物を受けとることが出来る。 39 この約束はあなた方のためにある。それは、あなた方の子供や遠く離れた人たちのためにもあるのだ。それは、私たちの王である神が呼んだ全ての人たちのためにある」
40 ペテロは他にもあらゆる言葉を使って彼らに警告を送った。そして、ペテロは彼らに頼み込んだ。「今こそ自分自身を救うんだ！今を生きている人々と共にある悪から自分を救うんだ」 41 ペテロのこの言葉を受け入れた人たちが、その日に洗礼を受けた。その数はなんと約3000人だった。そして彼らは信じる者たちに加わった。
信じる人たちは分かち合う
42 信じている者たちは、使徒たちの教えを聞くことに多くの時間を費やしていた。彼らはお互いに全てを分け合い、一緒に祈り、一緒に食事をした。 43 使徒たちを通して多くの奇跡が起きると、誰もが神へ大きな敬意を示した。 44 全ての信じる仲間たちは一緒に時間を過ごし、全てを共有し合った。 45 彼らは自分たちの土地を売り、また自分のものを売ってはお金を分け、必要のある人たちに分け与えていった。 46 信じる仲間たちは、神殿の中でずっと一緒に時間を過ごしていた。彼らはまた、自分たちの家でも一緒に食事をし、喜びの心と共に食べ物を分かち合っていた。 47 信じる仲間たちは神をたたえ、全ての人たちは人々から尊敬されていた。毎日、王である神が彼らの仲間を加え入れ、次から次へと多くの人たちが救われていった。

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost(A) came, they were all together(B) in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.(C) 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit(D) and began to speak in other tongues[a](E) as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing(F) Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed,(G) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?(H) 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,(I) Pontus(J) and Asia,[b](K) 10 Phrygia(L) and Pamphylia,(M) Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;(N) visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”(O)
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!(P) 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.(Q)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(R)
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.(S)
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,(T)
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood(U)
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord(V) will be saved.’[c](W)
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth(X) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,(Y) which God did among you through him,(Z) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;(AA) and you, with the help of wicked men,[d] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.(AB) 24 But God raised him from the dead,(AC) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.(AD) 25 David said about him:
“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.(AE)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[e](AF)
29 “Fellow Israelites,(AG) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(AH) David died and was buried,(AI) and his tomb is here(AJ) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(AK) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(AL) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(AM) and we are all witnesses(AN) of it. 33 Exalted(AO) to the right hand of God,(AP) he has received from the Father(AQ) the promised Holy Spirit(AR) and has poured out(AS) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’[f](AT)
36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(AU) and Messiah.”(AV)
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”(AW)
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,(AX) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.(AY) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 39 The promise is for you and your children(BA) and for all who are far off(BB)—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”(BC) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number(BD) that day.
The Fellowship of the Believers
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching(BE) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread(BF) and to prayer.(BG) 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.(BH) 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.(BI) 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.(BJ) 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.(BK) They broke bread(BL) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.(BM) And the Lord added to their number(BN) daily those who were being saved.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come:
21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Coming of the Holy Spirit
2 When (A)the Day of Pentecost had fully come, (B)they were all [a]with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and (C)it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them [b]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And (D)they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began (E)to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The Crowd’s Response
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, (F)devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the (G)multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak (H)Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own [c]language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and (I)Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and [d]Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”
13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”
Peter’s Sermon(J)
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, (K)since it is only [e]the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘And(L) it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
(M)That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and (N)your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
(O)And they shall prophesy.
19 (P)I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
20 (Q)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
21 And it shall come to pass
That (R)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you (S)by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know— 23 Him, (T)being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, (U)you [f]have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 (V)whom God raised up, having [g]loosed the [h]pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him:
(W)‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,
For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see (X)corruption.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’
29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you (Y)of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, (Z)and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [i]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, (AA)that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 (AB)This Jesus God has raised up, (AC)of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore (AD)being exalted [j]to (AE)the right hand of God, and (AF)having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He (AG)poured out this which you now see and hear.
34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
(AH)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
37 Now when they heard this, (AI)they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
38 Then Peter said to them, (AJ)“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [k]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and (AK)to your children, and (AL)to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
A Vital Church Grows
40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [l]perverse generation.” 41 Then those who [m]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 (AM)And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [n]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and (AN)many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and (AO)had all things in common, 45 and [o]sold their possessions and goods, and (AP)divided[p] them among all, as anyone had need.
46 (AQ)So continuing daily with one accord (AR)in the temple, and (AS)breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And (AT)the Lord added [q]to the church daily those who were being saved.
