37 Вавилонски цар Навуходоносор је уместо Хоније[a], Јоакимовог сина, зацарио Јосијиног сина Седекију који је почео да влада у Јудиној земљи. 2 Али ни он, ни његове слуге, ни сав народ у земљи нису послушали речи које им је Господ објавио преко пророка Јеремије.
3 Цар Седекија је послао Јеремији Селемијиног сина Јеухала и свештеника Софонију, Масијиног сина. Поручио му је: „Молим те, моли се за нас Господу, нашем Богу!“
4 Јеремија се слободно кретао у народу јер га још увек нису бацили у затвор. 5 Тада је фараонова војска надрла из Египта, за шта су чули Халдејци који су опседали Јерусалим. На ту вест су одступили од Јерусалима.
6 Господња реч је дошла пророку Јеремији: 7 „Овако каже Господ, Бог Израиља: ’Овако реците Јудином цару који вас је послао к мени по помоћ: ево, фараонова војска која надире да ти помогне вратиће се у своју земљу, у Египат. 8 А вратиће се и Халдејци па ће напасти овај град, освојиће га и спалити ватром.’
9 Овако каже Господ: не заваравајте се говорећи: ’Халдејци ће свакако отићи од нас!’, јер неће они отићи. 10 Јер, све и да поразиш сву војску Халдејаца која ратује са тобом, преживели међу њима – сваки прободени у свом шатору – устаће и ватром ће овај град спалити.“
11 А када се халдејска војска повукла од Јерусалима због фараонове војске, 12 и Јеремија је отишао из Јерусалима у Венијаминов крај, да тамо прими наследство од рођака. 13 Али догодило се да је на Венијаминовим вратима био заповедник страже звани Јераја. Био је син Хананијиног сина Селемије. Он је ухватио пророка Јеремију оптужујући га: „Ти би да пребегнеш Халдејцима!“
14 Јеремија му је одвратио – „То је лаж! Не бежим ја Халдејцима“ – али га овај није слушао. Јераја је ухватио Јеремију и одвукао га главарима. 15 Поглавари су се разбеснели на Јеремију, па су га тукли и бацили у тамницу, у кућу писара Јонатана од које су направили затвор.
16 Тако је Јеремија доспео у подрумску тамницу, у јаму. Тамо је Јеремија остао много дана. 17 Цар Седекија је послао људе по њега. Цар га је довео и потајно испитивао на двору. Питао га је: „Јавља ли шта Господ?“ Јеремија је одговорио:
„Јавља.“ И још: „Бићеш предан у руке цара Вавилона!“
18 Јеремија је рекао цару Седекији: „Шта сам ја скривио теби, твојим слугама и овом народу да ме баците у затвор? 19 Где су сада твоји пророци који су вам пророковали: ’Неће цар Вавилона да нападне ни тебе ни ову земљу?’ 20 И зато ме чуј, молим те, царе мој господару. Нека се моје преклињање излије пред тебе: не враћај ме у кућу писара Јонатана да тамо не умрем!“
21 На то је цар Седекија заповедио да Јеремију сместе у стражарско двориште, да му дневно дају комад хлеб из пекарске улице, све док у граду није нестало хлеба. Тако је Јеремија остао у стражарском дворишту.

37 После Јоахина[a] сина Јехојакимовог, вавилонски цар Навуходоносор постави Цидкију сина Јосијиног за цара Јуде. 2 Али ни он, ни његови службеници, ни народ земље нису обраћали пажњу на речи које је ГОСПОД говорио преко пророка Јеремије.
3 Цар Цидкија посла Јехухала сина Шелемјиног и свештеника Софонију сина Маасејиног пророку Јеремији с поруком: »Помоли се ГОСПОДУ, нашем Богу, за нас.«
4 А Јеремија се слободно кретао међу народом пошто још није био бачен у тамницу. 5 Фараонова војска је била изашла из Египта, па када су Халдејци који су опседали Јерусалим чули вест о томе, повукоше се од Јерусалима.
6 Реч ГОСПОДЊА дође пророку Јеремији: 7 »Овако каже ГОСПОД, Бог Израелов: Реци јудејском цару, који те је послао да ме упиташ за савет: ‚Фараонова војска, која је изашла да ти помогне, вратиће се у своју земљу, у Египат. 8 Тада ће се Халдејци вратити и напасти овај град, заузети га и спалити.‘
9 »Овако каже ГОСПОД: Не заваравајте се мислећи: ‚Халдејци ће сигурно отићи од нас‘, јер они неће отићи. 10 Чак и кад бисте поразили сву халдејску војску која вас напада, а у њеним шаторима остали само рањеници, ови би изашли и спалили овај град.«
11 Када се халдејска војска повукла од Јерусалима због фараонове војске, 12 Јеремија крену да изађе из града, пошто је хтео да оде на Венијаминово подручје, да уђе у посед свога дела имања међу тамошњим народом.
13 Али, када је стигао до Венијаминове капије, ухвати га заповедник страже по имену Јирија син Шелемје сина Ананијиног и рече: »Хоћеш да пребегнеш Халдејцима!«
14 »Није истина.« одговори Јеремија. »Нећу да пребегнем Халдејцима.«
Али Јирија не хтеде да саслуша Јеремију, него га ухвати и одведе службеницима. 15 Они се разгневише на Јеремију, па наредише да га истуку и утамниче у кући писара Јонатана, коју су претворили у тамницу. 16 Јеремију бацише у засвођену ћелију у тамници, где остаде дуго времена.
17 Онда цар Цидкија посла по њега, па га доведоше у палату, где га цар насамо упита: »Има ли каква порука од ГОСПОДА?«
»Има«, одговори Јеремија. »Бићеш предат у руке вавилонском цару.«
18 Потом Јеремија рече цару Цидкији: »Који злочин сам учинио против тебе или твојих службеника или овог народа да си ме бацио у тамницу? 19 Где су они твоји пророци који су ти пророковали: ‚Вавилонски цар неће напасти ни тебе ни овај народ‘? 20 Него, сада ме, молим те, саслушај, мој господару царе. Дозволи да пред тебе изнесем своју молбу: Не шаљи ме назад у кућу писара Јонатана, јер ћу тамо умрети.«
21 Тада цар Цидкија заповеди да Јеремију ставе у дворишну тамницу и да му сваког дана дају хлеба из Пекарске улице све док у целом граду не нестане хлеба.
Тако је Јеремија остао у дворишној тамници.

37 Zedekiah(A) son of Josiah was made king(B) of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin[a](C) son of Jehoiakim. 2 Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention(D) to the words the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
3 King Zedekiah, however, sent(E) Jehukal(F) son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah(G) son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: “Please pray(H) to the Lord our God for us.”
4 Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.(I) 5 Pharaoh’s army had marched out of Egypt,(J) and when the Babylonians[b] who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew(K) from Jerusalem.(L)
6 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire(M) of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched(N) out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.(O) 8 Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture(P) it and burn(Q) it down.’
9 “This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive(R) yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! 10 Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian[c] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn(S) this city down.”
11 After the Babylonian army had withdrawn(T) from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army, 12 Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property(U) among the people there. 13 But when he reached the Benjamin Gate,(V) the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, “You are deserting to the Babylonians!”(W)
14 “That’s not true!” Jeremiah said. “I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested(X) Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15 They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten(Y) and imprisoned(Z) in the house(AA) of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.
16 Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent(AB) for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked(AC) him privately,(AD) “Is there any word from the Lord?”
“Yes,” Jeremiah replied, “you will be delivered(AE) into the hands of the king of Babylon.”
18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What crime(AF) have I committed against you or your attendants or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where are your prophets(AG) who prophesied to you, ‘The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land’? 20 But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there.”(AH)
21 King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread(AI) in the city was gone.(AJ) So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.(AK)

Zedekiah’s Vain Hope(A)
37 Now King (B)Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. 2 (C)But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land gave heed to the words of the Lord which He spoke by the prophet Jeremiah.
3 And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and (D)Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, (E)“Pray now to the Lord our God for us.” 4 Now Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison. 5 Then (F)Pharaoh’s army came up from Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
6 Then the word of the Lord came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 7 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, (G)who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: “Behold, Pharaoh’s army which has come up to help you will return to Egypt, to their own land. 8 (H)And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city, and take it and burn it with fire.” ’ 9 Thus says the Lord: ‘Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us,” for they will not depart. 10 (I)For though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, every man in his tent, and burn the city with fire.’ ”
Jeremiah Imprisoned
11 And it happened, when the army of the Chaldeans left the siege of Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army, 12 that Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to claim his property there among the people. 13 And when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”
14 Then Jeremiah said, [a]“False! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he did not listen to him.
So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes. 15 Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him (J)and put him in prison in the (K)house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.
16 When Jeremiah entered (L)the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days, 17 then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?”
And Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be (M)delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon!”
18 Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What offense have I committed against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’? 20 Therefore please hear now, O my lord the king. Please, let my petition be accepted before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”
21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah (N)to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers’ street, (O)until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
