COVID-19: A Message from Bible Gateway

Interlinear Bible illustration

During this time of trial and uncertainty, when many of us are facing a fast-developing reality that includes ‘physical distancing’ and school and church closures, we at Bible Gateway are more aware than ever of our mission to be a source of light in God’s world.

We’re working hard to make sure our many visitors, followers, and members are readily equipped to read and understand the Bible, wherever they are. Many of us are at home, temporarily cut off from our larger communities. Many of us have children home from school. Many of us have jobs that have been thrown into uncertainty or are worried about the health of loved ones.

Bible Gateway will continue to live out its mission and provide new opportunities to engage with God’s Word.

[See the Scripture Engagement section on Bible Gateway]

We hope that both our free and our Bible Gateway Plus resources are especially helpful for you, whether you’re a pastor cut off from your physical libraries or research notes, or a Bible study leader trying to find creative ways to meet the needs of groups you may not be able to see in person, or if you’re just looking for ways to amplify your personal study of Scripture.

[See the Pastor Resource Page on Bible Gateway]

I’m drawn repeatedly to Psalm 46, which pictures God as a refuge and fortress for his people in a time of earthly upheaval. And I’ve found these notes from the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary of the Old Testament especially useful to deepening my understanding of that Psalm.

If you have family or friends who might benefit from our resources, don’t hesitate to share with them—and let them know they can try Bible Gateway Plus free for 30-days.

My prayer is that God would show us ways to bring his message to a world that’s been shaken and is looking wildly for answers. I hope Bible Gateway’s range of resources not only serve you where you are, I also hope all of us would be gifted with a renewed energy for spreading the message of the gospel in any way we can.

Once in a great while our lives change dramatically all at once and on short notice.

That is where we live now. For many of us it was just days ago we suddenly realized that extraordinary changes would take place in order to slow down the spread of an invisible little virus called COVID-19. Who would have guessed businesses and schools and sporting events would be shut down? Even churches have to learn new ways for ministry to carry on.

A lot of Christian leaders are sending the word “fear not.” That is appropriate (the Bible says it many times), but there is so much more to say. We need to know the reasons for faith and peace.

What Is an Interlinear Bible?

Interlinear Bible illustration

An interlinear Bible is a word study tool for those interested in the Bible’s original languages and how the Bible was translated into English (or any other language).

The Bible was written primarily in Hebrew and Greek, and translating it into another language is naturally not a word-for-word task. Many Greek words require the use of more than one English word to properly convey its meaning, and word order must often be changed for the English to make sense.

A typical interlinear Bible is not a translation itself. It’s a way of showing the English words from a modern translation below the original language text. Students of the Bible who know or are learning Greek or Hebrew can use an interlinear Bible to conduct word studies and uncover information about translation choices and original meanings or nuances.

God Responds to My Cries

Sara HagertyBy Sara Hagerty

In the day when I cried out, You
answered me, and made me bold
with strength in my soul.
PSALM 138:3, NKJV

This one day held incidental moments of aching strung together until dusk like clanging bells on my insides.

I snapped at the toddler, not so much because of his behavior as because of the text I received an hour earlier about the friend whose latest cancer scan showed signs of recurrence. That text hung in the backdrop of my day—buzz—as did the regret I had for my sharp tone and hurting child—buzz. I spent the late afternoon vacantly present, sautéing onions for dinner and sifting through the mail and ordering my mom a birthday gift, all while my mind spun. Three hours absent, yet a meal for (then) seven on the table, an extravagant birthday surprise in the mail, playdough distributed and manipulated and then swept off the floor.

Lisa Whittle

By Lisa Whittle

I never got the simple life I wanted.

I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and thinking back to the simpler days, when I was six. I didn’t know much then about real life—about the highs and lows, the successes and failures. I just knew how to play. And to cuddle kittens. And to dream. And to love Jesus. As much as I wish I could go back to that place where I didn’t know about real life, I can’t. And if I had, I would have missed out on the journey, so I don’t truly want to.
