Take the Christian Life Survey to Help You Gauge Your Spiritual Priorities: An Interview with Dr. Steven Bird

Dr. Steven BirdHaving a deep, meaningful, engaging relationship with God is what we were created for. We know it in our souls. But the everyday noise surrounding us competes for our attention and it can be challenging to determine how to live out the Christian life on a practical basis.

Bible Gateway interviewed Dr. Steven Bird, co-executive director of the Taylor University Center for Scripture Engagement (@TaylorU_CSE), about the Christian Life Survey and ways to more meaningfully engage Scripture.

What is the Taylor University Center for Scripture Engagement (TUCSE)?

Dr. Steven Bird: The vision of the TUCSE is to promote engagement with Scripture to empower the Christian church to passionately know God, love God, and serve the world. Our mission is to equip individuals and congregations to engage Scripture in ways that will drive Christian worship, discipleship, community, proclamation, and service. We try to do all of that through programs focused on research (the Christian Life Survey), training (Scripture engagement workshops), and providing resources (like the Scripture engagement articles on Bible Gateway and in The Abide Bible (Zondervan, 2020)).

How to Live the Bible — Whom Should We Believe?

howtostudythebible

This is the one-hundred-twenty-fourth lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

“When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” (Matthew 7:28-29)

Many people today have heard that belief in God is not possible anymore; that we know better than that now. To say that you absolutely believe in something or someone is to be certain where there is no certainty. It is to risk being a social pariah because to say you absolutely know something will prove anti-social to at least somebody along the way. One thing is certain, these people say, be suspicious of certainty. And they are quite certain about this uncertainty.

But belief is not about us. The true believer doesn’t focus on himself or herself, saying, I believe this. Rather, he or she says, I believe this. The more focus there is on the experience of believing, the greater the risk that we can believe something just for the sake of believing.

How Prayer Really Works

Alli WorthingtonBy Alli Worthington

It’s not easy to admit this to you, but I forget to pray. I’ve always felt God loves me and known he was intimately involved in the details of my life, but I forget he wants me to talk to him. I know he knows my thoughts and the intent of my heart and has guided my future, so talking to him sometimes seems optional.

What I discovered on those Wednesday nights in the upstairs classrooms at the end of a long hallway at Long Hollow Baptist Church was what I had been missing all these years. I discovered a God who wants to partner with us and invites us into an adventure with him but who also patiently waits for us to call down the resources of heaven and join him.

Jesus prayed continually and proactively, and heaven opened up because of it.

Why Jesus Had to Die: An Interview with Randy Clark

Randy ClarkWhat does it mean when the Bible says Jesus died as a ransom? How do we benefit from his death? Why was it necessary for Jesus to die? Why did he have to die by tortuous crucifixion? How does understanding what happened on the cross provide a new way of living in a hurting world?

Bible Gateway interviewed Randy Clark (@randyclarkga) about his book, Destined for the Cross: 16 Reasons Jesus Had to Die (Emanate, 2020).

Why is it that Jesus had to die?

Dr. Randy Clark This is the topic I’ve spent the last two years studying, and I discovered over 50 reasons. I narrowed it down to 16 of the most important reasons, and some of them include:

  • He died for the New Covenant Spirit to be poured out.
  • He had to die to bind the Strong Man and make a public spectacle of him, triumphing over him by the cross.
  • His death released the power of the Holy Spirit to advance the kingdom of God and provide gifts of the Holy Spirit to the church and the gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher.
  • He died to become both the better sacrifice and the better High Priest.
  • He died to reveal the righteousness and justice of God.
  • He died to set the captives free.
  • He died to reconcile humans to the Father.

How to Live the Bible — Faith Rises on the Horizon of Doubt

This is the one-hundred-twenty-third lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

What about the question of doubt? You cannot talk about believing without talking about doubt any more than you can talk about day without implying night. Some people think faith is an all-or-nothing proposition. You had better believe in God, those people maintain, and everything that God says, because if you show any hesitation, any gap, any questioning, then he’ll look at you with a scowl and snatch away from you the whole blessing.
