How to Live the Bible — Resurrection Day

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

You Matter

Amy WolffBy Amy Wolff

Editor’s Note: in 2017, Amy Wolf anonymously staked 20 encouraging yard signs around her small community of Newberg, Oregon. This small act of love quickly blossomed into a global movement. Some of the content of today’s post comes from people impacted by the movement.

“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.”
Psalm 139:13-14

My heart was pounding in my chest as our car lurched up the rough dirt road in a village called Mbabe in Rwanda. Today I would meet Jeska and Rosine.

Our family had written them letters for a few years now, although it was mostly their mother, Jacqueline, who wrote back (Jeska and Rosine were only seven and eight at the time). We had signed up to sponsor their monthly school fees, choosing two sisters around the same ages as our daughters, Harper and Avery.

Walking with Christ to the Cross, Week 6

The season of Lent invites us to return to God with our whole heart. It’s a theme that runs throughout Scripture and God’s relationship with his people. Throughout this Bible study, which you can read on your own or in a group setting, you’ll find links to Bible Gateway with notes that open automatically on your screen to the right of the Bible text in the Study sidebar.

We recommend that you sign up for a free 30-day trial to Bible Gateway Plus in order to access all the material. However, it’s not necessary for you to become a member in order to enjoy this devotional series.

The Cross

In this sixth week of Lent, we walk with Christ as he reaches his destination, the cross. Our study focuses on his crucifixion, death, and burial as recorded in Luke 23. If you’d like to read through all the events leading up to the crucifixion—from the Last Supper to Jesus’ trial before Pilate—begin with the list of passages and resources included at the end of this study. Reading one to two passages a day between now and Easter will allow you to experience all of the events of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday: The King Arrives

The days leading up to Easter often have an understandably somber feel to them, particularly as we contemplate Jesus’ arrest, trial, and execution. It’s easy to forget that the week begins with a joyful event: the Triumphal Entry!

Today is Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, we commemorate Jesus’ celebrated entry into Jerusalem just a few days before his arrest, trial, and crucifixion.

The “palm” in Palm Sunday refers to the palm branches waved by the adoring Jerusalem crowds who welcomed Jesus and proclaimed him King. The event is commonly referred to as the Triumphal Entry. Here’s the account from Matthew 21:1-11:

Clinging to Easter Sunday on Monday Morning

Sherri GraggBy Sherri Gragg

One minute, six days before Easter morning, I was making my way down the narrow staircase of a 200-year-old log cabin on a friend’s farm; the next minute, I was sprawled across the hardwood floors, clutching my knee in agony.

Everything in me raged: against gravity, against socks on stairs, against my aging body, against all the things I wouldn’t be able to do with an injured knee, against looming doctors’ appointments and hours spent in physical therapy. While I was at it, I raged against menopause too!

For the next 24 hours, I hobbled around the farm using a hiking stick for a cane as I fed the goats and stole eggs from the chickens. I watched from a distance as my three teens hiked the hill I had always wanted to tackle. I dangerously teetered over the fire pit, determined we would make s’mores one more time before we headed home and to the orthopedist. I gritted my teeth and drove my Jeep around the farm to prove I could still work the clutch with my bum knee.
