How to Live the Bible — Studying a Bible Passage

This is the one-hundred-fifty-second lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

As a practical matter, our study of the Bible typically comes down to peering intently into a specific passage. So, bearing in mind the importance of the whole-book context and meaning, how then do we plunge into a passage to understand and apply?

What we typically mean by a “passage” is a segment of a biblical book that holds together in some meaningful way. That may be just two or three verses, or a chapter or two. The chapter and verse numbers in the Bible we’re all familiar with were not developed for the biblical text until the 13th through the 16th centuries. They’re helpful, but we should not consider them definitive divisions of meaning.

A Blessing For a Bride

Shauna NiequistBy Shauna Niequist

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. —Genesis 2:24

People refer to your wedding day as the best day of your life. I understand why entirely. I remember my wedding day so absolutely clearly. I remember putting on the veil, seeing Aaron’s face for the first time, the heaviness of my dress as I walked down the aisle with my dad. I remember the taste of the champagne and the sound of the band. I remember dancing with Aaron as though it was last night.

How Does Fruit Show God’s Kindness?: An Interview with Andrew Wilson

Andrew WilsonIn the Bible, God repeatedly describes himself and his saving work in relation to physical things such as a rock, horn, eagle, lion, shield, wave, ox, and more. In his ministry, Jesus used a lily, sparrow, sheep, coin, fish, harvest, banquet, lamp, stone, seed, and vineyard to teach about the kingdom of God. Job 12:7-8 says, “Ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you.”

Bible Gateway interviewed Andrew Wilson (@AJWTheology) about his book, God of All Things: Rediscovering the Sacred in an Everyday World (Zondervan, 2021).

What do you mean when you write, “Things exist not for their own sakes but to draw us back to God”?

Andrew Wilson: We tend to see objects as things-in-themselves, which exist exclusively for natural reasons and natural purposes. But they aren’t. All things are created with a specific purpose—the glory of God—and they achieve that purpose partly by revealing to us something of who God is. They are there to prompt revelation, and insight, and worship.

Loving Our Muslim Neighbors During Ramadan

A tile depicting the Great MosqueAround the world, millions of Muslims are observing Ramadan—a period during which faithful Muslims fast, pray, and reflect on their moral responsibilities as followers of Islam.

Christians, of course, do not observe Ramadan. So why should Christians spend time thinking about a Muslim holy season?

Understanding Our Neighbors

First, it’s neighborly to be aware of any event that commands the attention of so many people (23% of the world’s population, not far behind Christianity’s 31%). But more to the point, Christians are called to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the entire world, and that means loving and seeking to understand our Muslim neighbors. (Consider how the apostle Paul’s presentation of the gospel in Athens reflected his understanding of his audience’s spiritual beliefs and questions.)

Why, After 10 Years of Talking with Atheists, I Still Believe in Christianity: An Interview with Justin Brierley

Justin BrierleyThe weekly podcast, blog, and video series Unbelievable? from Premier Insight, hosted by Justin Brierley (@unbelievablejb), is a unique meeting place that brings together people of radically different views. It seeks to build bridges and create a space for understanding where hard questions can be asked and discussed. The program believes the truth of the Christian faith has nothing to fear, and that being generous with those who don’t share the Christian faith makes that truth attractive and compelling.

Bible Gateway interviewed Justin, author of Unbelievable?: Why After Ten Years of Talking with Atheists I Still Believe in Christianity (SPCK, 2017).

What were the circumstances surrounding your decision to become a Christian?

Justin Brierley: I was fortunate to be raised in a committed Christian home (a rarer thing in the UK than in the USA!) and so grew up attending church and being part of a youth group.

It was in my late teens that I became serious about my faith and ‘owned’ it for myself. I encountered God in a fresh way while on a youth retreat, and faith ‘came alive’ in new ways. That birthed a passion in me to dedicate my life to serving Jesus.

Escaping the Comparison Parent Trap

Ann WilsonBy Ann Wilson

Have you ever thought to yourself, This world is so big and so dark and they’ll face so many challenges, so what do I know? What if I don’t get everything right that my kids need to learn? The training stage reveals our perceived deficiencies. We want to impart everything our kids will need in order to grow into healthy adults, but we can’t.

For me, a conversation with my close friend Callie really opened my eyes to a comforting yet truly vertical perspective. One day, she casually said she knew God had picked her to be the parent of her children, who were both biological and adopted. She knew he had chosen her and no one else, so God must know she had exactly what her kids needed.

He Has Risen!

The invitation of Lent is to wholeheartedly seek the Lord, to “take a good look at the way we’re living and reorder our lives under God” (Lamentations 3:40 MSG). On our six-week journey through Scripture, we’ve walked with Christ to the cross by reflecting on our need for repentance and God’s lavish grace for all who seek him. With Jesus’ disciples, we’ve witnessed his crucifixion, death, and burial. And now our journey through Lent brings us at last to the joyous conclusion of the gospel story, to those first moments of the first Easter morning.
