Learn to Love Art through the Eyes of Faith: An Interview with Russ Ramsey

Russ RamseyHow should we appreciate art through the lens of the gospel? Why are we drawn to beauty? Why do we seek perfection in artistic expression?

Bible Gateway interviewed Russ Ramsey (@russramsey) about his book, Rembrandt Is in the Wind: Learning to Love Art through the Eyes of Faith (Zondervan, 2022).

What is the message behind the title of this book?

Russ Ramsey: The title Rembrandt is in the Wind is a play on words. It refers to Rembrandt’s painting Storm on the Sea of Galilee, in which he paints himself as one of the disciples in the boat—the one in the center of the vessel looking out at the viewer. So in the painting of the storm, Rembrandt is, quite literally, in the wind. But this painting was also stolen in 1990 and has not been seen since, so in the criminal sense of the term, the canvas itself is “in the wind.”

Easter is the most significant event in the Christian church calendar. Without the events of Holy Week, there wouldn’t be a Christian faith. Easter is the reason the Christian church exists!

Bible Verses for Holy Week and Easter

Jesus during Holy WeekLooking for Bible verses for Holy Week and Easter? Here are portions of Scripture to help focus your attention during each day of Holy Week.

PALM SUNDAY

Philippians 2:5-11 (CSB): Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross.

For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow—in heaven and on earth and under the earth—and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

How to Live the Bible — How to Be Really Great

howtostudythebible

This is the two-hundred-second lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

He took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

“What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”

When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” Mark 10:32-37, 41-44

Discern—Notice God in Everything: An Interview with Stephen Macchia

Stephen MacchiaHave we forgotten the basic premise of practicing a preference for God in our daily lives? Have we implanted strategic planning, head-to-head battling, and will-of-God knowing in its place? How should we prioritize the care of our souls, the grace of our communities, and the mission of our lives, churches, and organizations?

Bible Gateway interviewed Stephen Macchia (@stevemacchia) about his book, The Discerning Life: An Invitation to Notice God in Everything (Zondervan, 2022).

Buy your copy of The Discerning Life in the FaithGateway Store where you'll enjoy low prices every day

What is spiritual discernment and why is it important?

Stephen Macchia: Spiritual discernment is noticing God first and foremost, in all his majesty and splendor, as well as in the ordinary and daily, from which we embrace God’s abiding presence, power, and peace in every aspect of our lives. Discernment is the choice and posture of the believer who seeks to practice a preference for God in all aspects of their personal lives and service to others.

Why have you concluded proper discernment is not being widely practiced today?

Stephen Macchia: My concern is that spiritual discernment has been pigeon-holed in the exclusive realm of decision-making and in our will-of-God pursuit. Spiritual discernment includes the decisions we make, but is preceded by an overall lifestyle of noticing God, celebrating the goodness of God, and then pointing God out to one another in the body of Christ.

Do the Biblical Accounts of Easter Contradict Each Other?

Get the free Bible study, Walking With Christ to the CrossIs the Bible full of contradictions? At some point every Bible reader, whether they’re a skeptic or a believer, must come to terms with perceived differences and contradictions in the Bible text. And these questions naturally assume a particular urgency around Easter.

Why is that? Because the events of Easter—Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection, as well as the events leading up to them—are among the most precisely detailed stories in the Bible. But more than that, the events of Easter are described by four different biblical authors. And four different perspectives make for four slightly different accounts. What should we make of these differences? Are these accounts truly contradictory? Do they weaken the trustworthiness of the Bible?

It only takes a minute to create your own Bible Gateway free personal account and you’ll immediately upgrade your Bible Gateway experience. Do it right now!

Those are all very good questions. If you’re troubled by, or simply curious about, alleged Bible contradictions in the Easter accounts or other Bibles stories, here are some reflections to help you think through the issue:
