Four Biblical Mothers to Remember (and Lots of Devotions for Moms)

hannahWe hope you’ll take some time this weekend to pay respects to your mother—or if that isn’t possible, to somebody in your life who embodies the grace and wisdom we associate with godly mothers. Even though most Christians believe this wholeheartedly, it’s still sometimes difficult to put the Bible’s constant reminders to pray without ceasing into practice. And when we do, do we sometimes wonder if our prayers are effective? When you pray, do you pray with the expectation that God will hear your requests and concerns, or has prayer become a rote practice; a routine you go through with no real hope that anything will come of it?

One of the joys in reading the Bible is being inspired and motivated by the determined resolve of its people when they declare and decree their firmest belief in the sovereignty, majesty, and goodness of God, such as

  • “Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom” (Psalm 145:3)
  • “…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:15)
  • “The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky displays his handiwork (Psalm 19:1) and
  • Worship the LORD with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy….For the LORD is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation (Psalm 100:2, 5).

One way of acknowledging our devotion to God during the month of May is to download and use this free daily Bible Declaration calendar to proclaim, decree, and declare your allegiance to the Lord. One Bible verse for each day:

The Bible and Trees

Common ash treeNational Arbor Day is always celebrated on the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates throughout the year based on best tree planting times in their area.

God’s creation of trees furnishes us with two of life’s essentials: food and oxygen. They also provide shelter, medicine, tools, and more. Without trees, our life on earth would be impossible.

What does the Bible say about trees?

[Read the Bible Gateway Blog post, Spiritual Lessons from the Life of Trees: An Interview with Matthew Sleeth, MD]

1 Chronicles 16:33 (NIV)

Let the trees of the forest sing,
