In the New Testament Everyday Bible Study Series, widely respected Bible scholar Scot McKnight combines interpretive insights with pastoral wisdom for all the books of the New Testament. Each volume provides brief, precise expositions of the text and offers a clear focus for the central message of each passage. McKnight supplies historical context, biblical connections, and questions for reflection and application perfect for group use or personal study.
Why did you pair the letters of James and Galatians together? Is there a common theme between them?
Scot McKnight Combining James and Galatians together is not as radical as it might sound. Yes, justification by faith and works pits the two against one another and that makes for a fun title—like some score will be settled. The simpler truth of the matter is length of the books. Each volume is about 40,000 words without the Bible’s texts and this made for a comfortable size for each letter. The study guides to each are separate books.

What do you imagine when, in the middle of Psalm 23, you read the author telling God, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies”? A table? In a field? With adversaries lurking around? Wouldn’t a fortress be better? What does it mean to sit at the table with the King of the Universe?
What prompted you to write At the Table with Jesus and what’s the significance of 66 days?
Louie Giglio: I wanted to equip and encourage people to take the next step toward a rich and fulfilling walk with Jesus. I talked a lot in Don’t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table about how to protect and guard against the Enemy’s attempts to sit down. But I also wanted to write about what sitting down for you looks like. What it means to linger in the presence of the King and to highlight the beauty, the mightiness, and the worthiness of the one who sits at the table with us: Jesus.

“The LORD said [to Elijah], ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”1 Kings 19:11-12
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

I celebrated my 90th birthday in 2019. What a gift life is! What an honor to live such a long and wonderful life. My health is excellent, and my soul is even better. I have been participating in an annual study of the effects of my years as a POW for the past 30 years. Each summer, Louise and I travel to Pensacola, Florida, to participate in the voluntary study with 180 other POWs. It is a very extensive physical exam, with thorough blood work and testing of every kind. The information gathered is compared to that gained from other groups of pilots and peers who have not been in the prison camps of North Vietnam.
The New American Standard Bible in the NASB 2020 text translation is now included in HarperCollins Christian Publishing’s top-quality leather bound Premier Collection of print Bibles (website).

[Jesus] said to another man, “Follow me.” But the man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”Luke 9:59-60
