Spiritual Maturity: Align Your Mind, Heart, and Will with God

Kevin Myers

This is the first lesson in the Spiritual Maturity Bible Gateway Blog video series by Kevin Myers (@KevinMyersPK), based on his book with Charlie Wetzel, Grown-Up Faith: The Big Picture for a Bigger Life (Thomas Nelson, 2019).

The book asks, “Why isn’t life everything we expected it to be? And why doesn’t our faith resolve our frustrations and problems?” Pastor Myers believes the reason we don’t experience a transformed life is that we fail to grow up spiritually. We focus on developing physically, intellectually, emotionally, and financially, yet our faith remains immature and anemic. In this brief video series, he introduces you to a simple road map to achieving a grown-up faith as you understand the Bible and the big picture of God’s story.

Lesson One: Develop spiritual maturity by aligning your mind, heart, and will with God

The Inexpressible Mystery of God’s Lovingkindness: An Interview with Michael Card

Michael CardScripture uses one particular word to describe the distinctiveness of God’s character: the Hebrew word hesed; a concept so rich in meaning that it doesn’t translate well into any single English word or phrase. The many dimensions of hesed are often expressed as lovingkindness, covenant faithfulness, steadfast love; an everlasting love beyond words.

Bible Gateway interviewed Michael Card (@Michael_Card) about his book, Inexpressible: Hesed and the Mystery of God’s Lovingkindness (IVP Books, 2018).

What is the meaning of the title?

Michael Card: The original title was “Undefinable,” which simply described the fact that there is no single word that defines hesed. The title committee came up with “Inexpressible,” which points to the same idea. Hesed is simply too big a concept to be fully expressed; that’s why in the subtitle we called it a “mystery.”

What is the definition you give to the word hesed?

Michael Card: Having said that it’s undefinable, my stab at putting words to hesed is “when the person from whom I have a right to expect nothing gives me everything.” It’s still woefully inadequate.

When I Discovered My Dream Had Become an Idol

Tiffini KilgoreBy Tiffini Kilgore

Since I said yes to God, I’ve been journaling my thoughts, my questions, and God’s responses. But this morning, I sit at the table and read, you have “relied on oppression and depended on deceit” (Isa. 30:12). The words pull my face to them and say, “Sweet one, pay attention. You are shaping your life on lies.”

I am? Am I putting all my trust in lies? This dream of a husband, a family, and a home? If it isn’t real to Jake, my second husband, then this dream I’ve put all my faith, energy, and heart into is a lie. Suddenly, I remember Satan is the Father of Lies. God only gives his grace, power, and strength for truth.

Is the dream I’m holding on to for dear life an idol? Have I been hungering for an idol all this time, thinking I was hungering for God?

Prayers for Our Lives: 95 Lifelines to God

In a teaching as clear and fresh as the blue Sea of Galilee, Jesus said this is how you should pray:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:9–13).

Wrestling with Faith and Doubt: An Interview with Dominic Done

Dominic DoneWrestling with faith and doubt can be profoundly lonely and isolating. Some suffer in silence while others abandon belief altogether, assuming doubt is incompatible with faith. But can doubt actually strengthen faith? What are practical ways for Christians to move through doubt—about such topics as the silence of God and the problem of suffering—into deep faith that embraces the mystery of belief?

Bible Gateway interviewed Dominic Done (@DominicDone) about his book, When Faith Fails: Finding God in the Shadow of Doubt (Thomas Nelson, 2019).

What role does doubt have in a Christian’s journey of faith?

Dominic Done: I love the word ‘journey,’ because it captures the heart of what it means to know God. When Jesus invites us to follow him, it necessitates movement, motion, and change. This means there will be seasons on the journey where his presence is real and tangible, closer than our next breath. This also means there will be times when it feels he’s a thousand miles away. In times like these we doubt. It’s important to realize, however, that doubt is normal and natural. Doubt is part of the complicated, enigmatic, beautiful mess of relationship. Just as love for someone you know is deepened through uncertainty—because your uncertainty fuels the quest for knowledge—so too, our love for God has the potential to deepen through uncertainty. The role of doubt, then, is one of invitation into a robust, more authentic, more loving faith. Doubt urges us to chase after God. It may not seem like it at the time, but doubt isn’t an obstacle. It’s an opportunity. To grow. To learn. To be changed. To go further on the journey than you ever imagined.

When Jesus and his disciples arrived at Martha’s house, she welcomed them gladly and immediately saw to their needs. But the more she served, the angrier she got. While she was slaving away, her sister was sitting at Jesus’ feet, hanging on to his every word. Finally, Martha erupted in frustration, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me” (Luke 10:40).
