He Reads Truth Bible: An Interview with John Greco and Ryan Myers

John Greco

A Bible formatted with an artful design intended to appeal specifically to men, from its typeface to theological memos for increasing Bible literacy to color-coded genre identification for each book of the Bible to colorful infographics, charts, and maps.

Bible Gateway interviewed content director John Greco (@johngrecowrites) and creative director Ryan Myers (@uberryan) about the He Reads Truth Bible (B&H Publishing, 2019).

Ryan Myers

What makes this Bible specifically directed toward men?

Ryan Myers: This Bible is a companion to the She Reads Truth Bible and is a natural extension of the global He Reads Truth community. While nothing inside these pages is reserved specifically for men, every design decision was made with our end user in mind. Whether it be the cover color/textile decisions or the interior typography choices, I’m confident that men (and probably women!) will find this Bible both useful and beautiful. It’s really a striking book, both inside and out, and I hope that it inspires others to break the norm and make Bibles more beautiful, because they deserve to be.

How to Live the Bible — Our Beginning, the Bible’s Beginning

See Mel Lawrenz’s book, How to Study the Bible: A Practical Guide.

If someone were to ask you to take as much time as you wanted to answer the question “Who are you?” you would start at the beginning. Your birth, your parents, your hometown, your ethnicity. To fully understand a person, a people, or a place today, you must go back to their beginnings.

Bible Reading: 3-Track Plan for Engaging Scripture at Your Own Pace

Of all the reasons people mention for not reading the Bible, simple discouragement ranks highest. The Bible’s length alone is imposing. More like a self-contained library than a book, it includes 66 different books, by several dozen authors. Little wonder people get confused and discouraged.

The 3-Track Reading Plan found in the bestselling NIV Student Bible (Zondervan, 2011) breaks the Bible into more manageable portions. If you’re new to the Bible, begin with Track 1, then proceed to Track 2, and finally—if you’re ambitious—tackle Track 3. Your understanding and appreciation for the Bible should gradually increase.

All three tracks assign only one chapter a day, except in a few cases where the chapters are very short. The reading should take only about 10 minutes.

What Does the Bible Say about Wealth and Prosperity?

Costi W. HinnBy Costi W. Hinn

Abundance isn’t God’s provision for me
to live in luxury. It’s his provision for me to
help others live. God entrusts me with his
money not to build my kingdom on earth,
but to build his kingdom in heaven.

—RANDY ALCORN

A dear friend of mine has been immensely blessed with the ability to gain wealth. He’s a hard worker, a man of integrity, and everything he touches seems to turn to gold.

Almost whispering, he asked me one time, “Is it okay that I make so much money?” He explained that his employer wanted to give him another raise as a reward for his work ethic and impact on the company. He was considering turning it down because he felt like it was too much money for one person to make. After a brief discussion, it became obvious that his problem wasn’t making too much money; his problem was fear of being labeled as greedy because he was wealthy.

What Made Jesus Mad?: An Interview with Tim Harlow

Tim HarlowChristians love to focus on the gentle and tender heart of Jesus. But what about his righteous rage? In the Gospels, what, and who, ignited Jesus’ anger? How should we appropriately respond like Jesus when necessary?

Bible Gateway interviewed Tim Harlow (@tlharlow) about his book, What Made Jesus Mad?: Rediscover the Blunt, Sarcastic, Passionate Savior of the Bible (Thomas Nelson, 2019).

If anger is not a sin (Eph. 4:26), what is it?

Tim Harlow: Anger is an emotion. Paul said, “In your anger, do not sin.” Jesus didn’t sin, but he did get angry. He was also sad with grief (John 11:35). He was fully human with the full range of human emotions. This is why I believe it’s so important to talk about it.

What is recorded in the Bible to be the “match that always lit Jesus’ fuse”?

Tim Harlow: I believe this is the key verse: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces” (Matthew 23:13).

The rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem is not the story of a single successful person. The walls were rebuilt because a leader rallied many people to work together. Nehemiah asked for help, first from the king and then from the people of Jerusalem. Together they rebuilt the wall in a remarkable 52 days.

Bible Reflections: “My God, my God…”

The Dark Night of the Soul

Psalm 22 begins as an outcry of tremendous affliction. So much so, that just before Jesus dies on the cross, he appears to quote the first line of David’s outcry: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (22:1)

I say that Jesus appears to quote this line because of my uncertainty that David provided these words for Jesus’ later use. Certainly they came from David’s lips, this leitmotif of suffering and distance from God the Father just before the fulfillment of God’s promise of redemption. But Dietrich Bonhoeffer puts it better when he writes, “The same words that David spoke, therefore, the future Messiah spoke in him. Christ prayed along with the prayers of David, or, more accurately, it is none other than Christ who prayed them in Christ’s own forerunner, David.” (You can find this quotation taken from the Zondervan Bible Commentary note: “The Dark Night of the Soul”.)

How to Live the Bible — Life Applications of Scripture

The world is a better place when millions of Christians study the Bible seriously, searching hard for the original meaning of its authors, uncovering the foundations on which all of life can be based. But the world is not a better place when those students of the Bible neglect to apply the truth of Scripture to real life accurately and faithfully.
