How to Live Your Faith in a Rapidly Changing Multi-Religious Society

Irving Hexham

By Irving Hexham

The Bible begins by proclaiming the great truth that God created the heavens and the earth. It continues by telling the story of the creation of humankind and states very clearly that all people are made in the image of God. Not surprisingly, given the fact that God is the creator of all things, we are told in Genesis 1 that he surveyed his creation and saw that it was good.

Today many people laugh at the biblical story and see it as a relic from a pre-scientific age. “Don’t Christians realize,” they say, “that we now know life was created by a process of evolution. Bible stories are fables without any relevance to the modern world.” Although this is a popular view, it is wrong. It overlooks the uniqueness of the biblical account of creation and what it really teaches about the world and our place in it.

Spiritual Lessons from the Life of Trees: An Interview with Matthew Sleeth, MD

Dr. Matthew SleethThe Bible talks about trees more than any living creation other than people. Have you missed the forest…and the trees? For example, the Bible refers to its wisdom as a Tree of Life (Proverbs 3:18). What is the hidden language of trees that can help us better understand God?

Bible Gateway interviewed Matthew Sleeth, MD (@MatthewSleeth) about his book, Reforesting Faith: What Trees Teach Us About the Nature of God and His Love for Us (WaterBrook, 2019).

Describe how you went from being an atheist to becoming a Christian and the role the Bible had in that transformation.

Dr. Matthew Sleeth: I was married with two children and was chief of staff and head of the emergency department. We lived in a beautiful home on the coast of Maine. We had gone through a series of bad events, starting with my wife’s brother drowning in front of my children. A patient I had resuscitated several times began to stalk me and eventually killed his mother. Then more bad things happened, and I woke up to the fact that there was evil on the planet.

At the time I did not believe in anything that could not be measured or reproduced. But evil is not a scientific concept; it’s a spiritual reality. If evil was real, what was on the other side? I began to look for answers. I read books like the Ramayana, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Qur’an.

Described as “a cross between Thomas Aquinas and Billy Graham,” Dr. Geisler was the co-founder and former president of Southern Evangelical Seminary (SES) in North Carolina and co-founder of Veritas International University in California. SES President Richard Land calls Dr. Geisler “the pre-eminent Christian apologist of the past half-century.”

Announcing the news of his death, his Facebook ministry page posted 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (ESV), one of his favorite passages to quote when he learned of a Christian’s passing: “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.”

How to Say No and Not Feel Guilty: An Interview with Kevin G. Harney

Kevin G. HarneyAre you overwhelmed with your to-do list? Do you feel guilty when you say “no” to anything? Were you taught that “no” is a dirty word? Do you think saying “no” is a sign of weakness? What does the Bible say about saying “no”?

Bible Gateway interviewed Kevin G. Harney (@KevinGHarney) about his book, No Is a Beautiful Word: Hope and Help for the Overcommitted and (Occasionally) Exhausted (Zondervan, 2019).

Why do people say yes to requests made of them when they really want to say no?

Kevin G. Harney: I think Christians feel pressured to say yes because we think it honors Jesus. We picture our Savior serving, sacrificing, loving, and caring and we want to be like him. To an extent, this is good and healthy. We should seek to be like Jesus and care as he does. But, none of us is able to meet every need, care for every person, and say yes to every opportunity. Not even Jesus said yes all the time. There were many times Jesus said no because of his wisdom and love. There are also people who say yes reflexively because they’re fearful of the consequences of saying no. They want to be loved and respected. They desire to seem capable and compassionate. They’re worried that others will feel hurt, offended, or put off. So, they take what seems like the easy path and just say yes.

The Curse of Being Easily Deceived Died When Jesus Rose from the Dead

By Kat Armstrong

Two chapters into God’s Genesis story of redemption, we find Eve, the first woman, hoodwinked by the serpent. She doesn’t exactly portray us as trustworthy. Since my childhood, I’ve noticed every storybook picture of the fall of mankind placed Eve in the center of the narrative as the one who was easily deceived. Her failures follow her to the New Testament, when Paul used the sin in the Garden to explain why first-century women in Ephesus were not permitted to teach men. Here’s what Paul had to say about it: “I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed” (1 Tim. 2:12–14 CSB).

Children’s storybook illustrations and the apostle Paul’s references paint a bleak picture of womanhood as it relates to following God’s instructions. Generations of respected church leaders and theologians influenced by misogyny made it even harder for me to see past Eve’s foolishness and resist taking it on as my own.

Marg Mowczko, a brilliant student of the Scriptures, compiled the following list of misogynistic quotes of early church fathers.

The renowned “Father of Latin Christianity,” Tertullian, wrote:
“And do you not know that you are (each) an Eve? The sentence of God on this sex of yours lives in this age: the guilt must of necessity live too. You are the devil’s gateway: you are the unsealer of that (forbidden) tree: you are the first deserter of the divine law: you are she who persuaded him whom the devil was not valiant enough to attack. You destroyed so easily God’s image, man.”

When My Life Suffered a Dream-Crushing Blow

Chris and Emily NortonBy Chris Norton

Editor’s Note: On October 16, 2010, Chris Norton suffered a crushing spinal injury playing college football. The injury was so severe, he needed to be airlifted by helicopter to Mayo Clinic. Taken from the new book The Seven Longest Yards written by Chris and his wife Emily, this post picks up the story mid-helicopter ride through his subsequent surgery and initial prognosis.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 34:4

“Help,” I wheezed, but I didn’t know if I had made any noise. The roar of the helicopter drowned out every sound. If I couldn’t hear myself, how could the EMTs hear me? The answer was: they couldn’t. “I can’t breathe!” I said, but no one moved. “Help,” I called again, but neither EMT turned toward me. My only hope was to make eye contact with one of them or for one of them to see me mouthing “help.” Both were looking the other way. I wanted to wave my hands to get their attention, but clearly that wasn’t an option. Surely the heart monitor will alert them that I’m struggling, I hoped, but still no one noticed. I was on my own.
