How Jesus Modeled Change: An Interview with Hal Donaldson

Hal DonaldsonDo you observe a need to instigate a change in your immediate environment but are unsure how to move beyond pity, helplessness, and outrage? Do you wonder what one person can really do to enact the profound change the world needs?

Bible Gateway interviewed Hal Donaldson (@HalDonaldson), who, along with Kirk Noonan and Lindsay Donaldson, is the author of Disruptive Compassion: Becoming the Revolutionary You Were Born to Be (Zondervan, 2019).

What message are you conveying by the title?

Hal Donaldson: When followers of Jesus consider the condition of the world, we can’t be satisfied with what we see. Millions are still lost and suffering. And hatred is on the rise. If we do nothing, the status quo will prevail. Thus, we must disrupt our lives in ways that change the normal course and rush love and hope to the world. The book challenges readers to reject a life of selfishness and isolation and practice radical kindness. If we aren’t willing to make changes in how we live and how we think, the normal course will only perpetuate more oppression, racism, poverty, crime, and moral decay. And, for believers, that’s unacceptable.

How God Orchestrated My Big Break

Rudy PérezBy Rudy Pérez

After my first album came out with RCA in 1984, the first single to go to radio was “It’s a Lie.” To promote the record, I was sent to Mexico to perform on one of the biggest TV variety shows in the country, Siempre en Domingo (Always on Sunday). After my performance, the host of the show, Raúl Velasco, came up to me and said, “Rudy, we loved your performance. We are taking several artists on a promotional tour of Mexico and the U.S., including Puerto Rico, for six weeks, and we want you to go.” The invitation was an honor and an amazing opportunity, so I agreed.

One day on the tour, while in Puerto Rico, I came out of the elevator of our hotel. A high-end salon with large glass windows was right across the hall. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Seated in a chair, getting a manicure, was my musical hero, José Feliciano, surrounded by an entourage of men.

Mark E. MooreIs there a way to strengthen your spiritual core in a similar manner to exercising your physical core which results in a strong and stable midsection, better balance, improved posture, and reduction in back pain? Can a few minutes a day tactically reading the Bible help you master the core of Scripture?

Bible Gateway interviewed Mark E. Moore (@markmoore330) about his book, Core 52: A Fifteen-Minute Daily Guide to Build Your Bible IQ in a Year (WaterBrook, 2019).

You begin your book by reporting the conclusions of an extensive independent research study about the benefits of engaging with the Bible. Share those results here.

Dr. Mark E. Moore: This was one of the most important studies ever done and it confirms what most pastors instinctively know: Knowing the Bible better makes people better. Those who engage with God’s Word four times a week or more experienced 62% less drunkenness, 59% less use of pornography, 59% less sexual sin, and gambled 45% less. This is not merely guilt manipulation. Bible engaged people have better self-perceptions which results in healthier relationships. They report 40% less bitterness, 32% fewer destructive thoughts, 32% less isolation, 30% less loneliness, and an increased ability to forgive by 31%. Bible engagement is the single greatest predictor of spiritual growth.

Quiz: What Does the Bible Say About the Sun, Moon, and Stars?

Sun, moon, and stars rendition by NASA

By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations,
    by understanding he set the heavens in place;
by his knowledge the watery depths were divided,
and the clouds let drop the dew.
Proverbs 3:19-20

What if God Has More for Your Marriage Than Happily Ever After?: An Interview with Aaron Smith

Aaron SmithWhat if God has a unique purpose for your marriage? Is your marriage God-centered or us-centered? Are you and your spouse ambassadors of holy love to a hurting world? Is your marriage what God intends it to be: a life-saving, hope-inspiring, and transforming force of his love?

Bible Gateway interviewed Aaron Smith (@husbandrevo), who, along with his wife Jennifer Smith (@unveiledwife), is the author of Marriage After God: Chasing Boldly After God’s Purpose for Your Life Together (Zondervan, 2019).

Talk about some of the challenges you’ve faced together in your marriage.

Aaron Smith: The three biggest challenges we faced together in our marriage were sexual intimacy, the burden of debt, and learning how to communicate.

For the first four years of our marriage, we couldn’t enjoy sex because my wife experienced excruciating pain every time we tried. This challenge in our marriage became the source of many other challenges, like wrestling with negative thoughts about unmet expectations, disappointment, and doubt about whether we were “compatible” for each other.

The Bible Says the Moon Shows the Glory of God

The MoonThe moon is the material heavenly body in our solar system that God made on the fourth day of creation to give light at night.

And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:16-18

[See the Heavens’ Declare section of resources in the Bible Gateway Store]

According to the Encyclopedia of The Bible on Bible Gateway, God’s creation of the moon and the other heavenly bodies is alluded to in Psalm 8:3-4, 104:19, and 136:8-9. Such a created object is stated to be inferior to God himself in Job 25:5-6 and Isaiah 24:23.

How to Live the Bible — Dealing with Doubts

I am glad when I have the opportunity to speak with people who have doubts about their faith. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not glad about the pain they experience in one of the most intimate issues of life. And that pain can be intense—like that felt by a husband or wife who overhears whispering hints that his or her spouse has been cheating. Or like the pain that follows the death of a loved one. Conversations with people who doubt are often halting, quiet, scattered. I have never met someone of faith who wanted to have doubts about their faith, because it really isn’t about doubting faith—it’s about doubting God.
