The Sealed of Israel

After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, (A)holding the four winds of the earth, (B)that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree. Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying, (C)“Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God (D)on their foreheads.” (E)And I heard the number of those who were sealed. (F)One hundred and forty-four thousand (G)of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed:

of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand were [a]sealed;
of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed.

A Multitude from the Great Tribulation

After these things I looked, and behold, (H)a great multitude which no one could number, (I)of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, (J)clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, (K)“Salvation belongs to our God (L)who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 (M)All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and (N)worshiped God, 12 (O)saying:

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.
Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in (P)white robes, and where did they come from?”

14 And I said to him, [b]“Sir, you know.”

So he said to me, (Q)“These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and (R)washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will (S)dwell among them. 16 (T)They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; (U)the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne (V)will shepherd them and lead them to [c]living fountains of waters. (W)And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Seventh Seal: Prelude to the Seven Trumpets

When(X) He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. (Y)And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, (Z)and to them were given seven trumpets. Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with (AA)the prayers of all the saints upon (AB)the golden altar which was before the throne. And (AC)the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And (AD)there were noises, thunderings, (AE)lightnings, (AF)and an earthquake.

So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

First Trumpet: Vegetation Struck

The first angel sounded: (AG)And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown (AH)to the [d]earth. And a third (AI)of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

Second Trumpet: The Seas Struck

Then the second angel sounded: (AJ)And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, (AK)and a third of the sea (AL)became blood. (AM)And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Third Trumpet: The Waters Struck

10 Then the third angel sounded: (AN)And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, (AO)and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 (AP)The name of the star is Wormwood. (AQ)A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.

Fourth Trumpet: The Heavens Struck

12 (AR)Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day [e]did not shine, and likewise the night.

13 And I looked, (AS)and I heard an [f]angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, (AT)“Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”

Fifth Trumpet: The Locusts from the Bottomless Pit

Then the fifth angel sounded: (AU)And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to (AV)the [g]bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the (AW)sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, (AX)as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were commanded (AY)not to harm (AZ)the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have (BA)the seal of God on their foreheads. And [h]they were not given authority to kill them, (BB)but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. In those days (BC)men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

(BD)The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. (BE)On their heads were crowns of something like gold, (BF)and their faces were like the faces of men. They had hair like women’s hair, and (BG)their teeth were like lions’ teeth. And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was (BH)like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. 10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had as king over them (BI)the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is [i]Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name [j]Apollyon.

12 (BJ)One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things.

Sixth Trumpet: The Angels from the Euphrates

13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the (BK)golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound (BL)at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a (BM)third of mankind. 16 Now (BN)the number of the army (BO)of the horsemen was two hundred million; (BP)I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; (BQ)and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For [k]their power is in their mouth and in their tails; (BR)for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.

20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (BS)did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship (BT)demons, (BU)and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders (BV)or their [l]sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

The Mighty Angel with the Little Book

10 I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. (BW)And a rainbow was on (BX)his head, his face was like the sun, and (BY)his feet like pillars of fire. He had a little book open in his hand. (BZ)And he set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars. When he cried out, (CA)seven thunders uttered their voices. Now when the seven thunders [m]uttered their voices, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven saying [n]to me, (CB)“Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them.”

The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land (CC)raised up his [o]hand to heaven and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, (CD)who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, (CE)that there should be delay no longer, but (CF)in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets.

John Eats the Little Book

Then the voice which I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.”

So I went to the angel and said to him, “Give me the little book.”

And he said to me, (CG)“Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

10 Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, (CH)and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, (CI)my stomach became bitter. 11 And [p]he said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.”

The Two Witnesses

11 Then I was given (CJ)a reed like a measuring rod. [q]And the angel stood, saying, (CK)“Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. But leave out (CL)the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, (CM)for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will (CN)tread the holy city underfoot for (CO)forty-two months. And I will give power to my two (CP)witnesses, (CQ)and they will prophesy (CR)one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”

These are the (CS)two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the [r]God of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, (CT)fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. (CU)And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. These (CV)have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.

The Witnesses Killed

When they (CW)finish their testimony, (CX)the beast that ascends (CY)out of the bottomless pit (CZ)will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie in the street of (DA)the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, (DB)where also [s]our Lord was crucified. (DC)Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations [t]will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days, (DD)and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. 10 (DE)And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, (DF)and send gifts to one another, (DG)because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

The Witnesses Resurrected

11 (DH)Now after the three-and-a-half days (DI)the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 And [u]they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” (DJ)And they ascended to heaven (DK)in a cloud, (DL)and their enemies saw them. 13 In the same hour (DM)there was a great earthquake, (DN)and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid (DO)and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14 (DP)The second woe is past. Behold, the third woe is coming quickly.

Seventh Trumpet: The Kingdom Proclaimed

15 Then (DQ)the seventh angel sounded: (DR)And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, (DS)“The [v]kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, (DT)and He shall reign forever and ever!” 16 And (DU)the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and (DV)worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty,
The One (DW)who is and who was [w]and who is to come,
Because You have taken Your great power (DX)and reigned.
18 The nations were (DY)angry, and Your [x]wrath has come,
And the time of the (DZ)dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then (EA)the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of [y]His covenant was seen in His temple. And (EB)there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, (EC)and great hail.

The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon

12 Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out (ED)in labor and in pain to give birth.

And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, (EE)a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. (EF)His tail drew a third (EG)of the stars of heaven (EH)and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood (EI)before the woman who was ready to give birth, (EJ)to devour her Child as soon as it was born. She bore a male Child (EK)who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was (EL)caught up to God and His throne. Then (EM)the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there (EN)one thousand two hundred and sixty days.

Satan Thrown Out of Heaven

And war broke out in heaven: (EO)Michael and his angels fought (EP)with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they [z]did not prevail, nor was a place found for [aa]them in heaven any longer. So (EQ)the great dragon was cast out, (ER)that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, (ES)who deceives the whole world; (ET)he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, (EU)“Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, (EV)who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 11 And (EW)they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, (EX)and they did not love their lives to the death. 12 Therefore (EY)rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! (EZ)Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, (FA)because he knows that he has a short time.”

The Woman Persecuted

13 Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted (FB)the woman who gave birth to the male Child. 14 (FC)But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, (FD)that she might fly (FE)into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished (FF)for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15 So the serpent (FG)spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus [ab]Christ.

The Beast from the Sea

13 Then [ac]I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw (FH)a beast rising up out of the sea, (FI)having [ad]seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a (FJ)blasphemous name. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The (FK)dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads (FL)as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And (FM)all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, (FN)“Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”

And he was given (FO)a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to [ae]continue for (FP)forty-two months. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, (FQ)His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to him (FR)to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And (FS)authority was given him over every [af]tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, (FT)whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain (FU)from the foundation of the world.

(FV)If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 (FW)He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; (FX)he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. (FY)Here is the [ag]patience and the faith of the saints.

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then I saw another beast (FZ)coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, (GA)whose deadly wound was healed. 13 (GB)He performs great signs, (GC)so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 (GD)And he deceives [ah]those who dwell on the earth (GE)by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword (GF)and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak (GG)and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, (GH)to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has [ai]the mark or (GI)the name of the beast, (GJ)or the number of his name.

18 (GK)Here is wisdom. Let him who has (GL)understanding calculate (GM)the number of the beast, (GN)for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

The Lamb and the 144,000

14 Then I looked, and behold, [aj]a (GO)Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him (GP)one hundred and forty-four thousand, [ak]having His Father’s name (GQ)written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, (GR)like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of (GS)harpists playing their harps. They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song (GT)except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. These are the ones who were not defiled with women, (GU)for they are virgins. These are the ones (GV)who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These (GW)were [al]redeemed from among men, (GX)being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb. And (GY)in their mouth was found no [am]deceit, for (GZ)they are without fault [an]before the throne of God.

The Proclamations of Three Angels

Then I saw another angel (HA)flying in the midst of heaven, (HB)having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—(HC)to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— saying with a loud voice, (HD)“Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; (HE)and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.”

And another angel followed, saying, (HF)“Babylon[ao] is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because (HG)she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, (HH)“If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his (HI)mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he himself (HJ)shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is (HK)poured out full strength into (HL)the cup of His indignation. (HM)He shall be tormented with (HN)fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And (HO)the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

12 (HP)Here is the [ap]patience of the saints; (HQ)here[aq] are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven saying [ar]to me, “Write: (HR)‘Blessed are the dead (HS)who die in the Lord from now on.’ ”

“Yes,” says the Spirit, (HT)“that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow (HU)them.”

Reaping the Earth’s Harvest

14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel (HV)came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, (HW)“Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come [as]for You to reap, for the harvest (HX)of the earth is ripe.” 16 So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.

Reaping the Grapes of Wrath

17 Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

18 And another angel came out from the altar, (HY)who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, (HZ)“Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe.” 19 So the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into (IA)the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And (IB)the winepress was trampled (IC)outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, (ID)up to the horses’ bridles, for one thousand six hundred [at]furlongs.

Prelude to the Bowl Judgments

15 Then (IE)I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous: (IF)seven angels having the seven last plagues, (IG)for in them the wrath of God is complete.

And I saw something like (IH)a sea of glass (II)mingled with fire, and those who have the victory over the beast, (IJ)over his image and [au]over his mark and over the (IK)number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, (IL)having harps of God. They sing (IM)the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the (IN)Lamb, saying:

(IO)“Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
(IP)Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the [av]saints!
(IQ)Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?
For You alone are (IR)holy.
For (IS)all nations shall come and worship before You,
For Your judgments have been manifested.”

After these things I looked, and [aw]behold, (IT)the [ax]temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened. And out of the [ay]temple came the seven angels having the seven plagues, (IU)clothed in pure bright linen, and having their chests girded with golden bands. (IV)Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God (IW)who lives forever and ever. (IX)The temple was filled with smoke (IY)from the glory of God and from His power, and no one was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

The Seven Bowls

16 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying (IZ)to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the [az]bowls (JA)of the wrath of God on the earth.”

First Bowl: Loathsome Sores

So the first went and poured out his bowl (JB)upon the earth, and a [ba]foul and (JC)loathsome sore came upon the men (JD)who had the mark of the beast and those (JE)who worshiped his image.

Second Bowl: The Sea Turns to Blood

Then the second angel poured out his bowl (JF)on the sea, and (JG)it became blood as of a dead man; (JH)and every living creature in the sea died.

Third Bowl: The Waters Turn to Blood

Then the third angel poured out his bowl (JI)on the rivers and springs of water, (JJ)and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters saying:

(JK)“You are righteous, [bb]O Lord,
The One (JL)who is and who [bc]was and who is to be,
Because You have judged these things.
For (JM)they have shed the blood (JN)of saints and prophets,
(JO)And You have given them blood to drink.
[bd]For it is their just due.”

And I heard [be]another from the altar saying, “Even so, (JP)Lord God Almighty, (JQ)true and righteous are Your judgments.”

Fourth Bowl: Men Are Scorched

Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl (JR)on the sun, (JS)and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they (JT)blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; (JU)and they did not repent (JV)and give Him glory.

Fifth Bowl: Darkness and Pain

10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl (JW)on the throne of the beast, (JX)and his kingdom became full of darkness; (JY)and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. 11 They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.

Sixth Bowl: Euphrates Dried Up

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl (JZ)on the great river Euphrates, (KA)and its water was dried up, (KB)so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean (KC)spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of (KD)the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of (KE)the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, (KF)performing signs, which go out to the kings [bf]of the earth and of (KG)the whole world, to gather them to (KH)the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

15 (KI)“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, (KJ)lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

16 (KK)And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, [bg]Armageddon.

Seventh Bowl: The Earth Utterly Shaken

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, (KL)“It is done!” 18 And (KM)there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; (KN)and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake (KO)as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now (KP)the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And (KQ)great Babylon (KR)was remembered before God, (KS)to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then (KT)every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.

The Scarlet Woman and the Scarlet Beast

17 Then (KU)one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying [bh]to me, “Come, (KV)I will show you the judgment of (KW)the great harlot (KX)who sits on many waters, (KY)with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and (KZ)the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”

So he carried me away in the Spirit (LA)into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting (LB)on a scarlet beast which was full of (LC)names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. The woman (LD)was arrayed in purple and scarlet, (LE)and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, (LF)having in her hand a golden cup (LG)full of abominations and the filthiness of [bi]her fornication. And on her forehead a name was written:

(LH)MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT,
THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS
AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS
OF THE EARTH.

I saw (LI)the woman, drunk (LJ)with the blood of the saints and with the blood of (LK)the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.

The Meaning of the Woman and the Beast

But the angel said to me, “Why did you marvel? I will tell you the [bj]mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns. The beast that you saw was, and is not, and (LL)will ascend out of the bottomless pit and (LM)go to [bk]perdition. And those who (LN)dwell on the earth (LO)will marvel, (LP)whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and [bl]yet is.

(LQ)“Here is the mind which has wisdom: (LR)The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. 10 There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must (LS)continue a short time. 11 The (LT)beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to [bm]perdition.

12 (LU)“The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 (LV)These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will (LW)overcome them, (LX)for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; (LY)and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”

15 Then he said to me, (LZ)“The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, (MA)are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which you [bn]saw on the beast, (MB)these will hate the harlot, make her (MC)desolate (MD)and naked, eat her flesh and (ME)burn her with fire. 17 (MF)For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, (MG)until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman whom you saw (MH)is that great city (MI)which reigns over the kings of the earth.”

The Fall of Babylon the Great

18 After(MJ) these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, (MK)and the earth was illuminated with his glory. And he cried [bo]mightily with a loud voice, saying, (ML)“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and (MM)has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and (MN)a cage for every unclean and hated bird! For all the nations (MO)have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, (MP)and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the [bp]abundance of her luxury.”

And I heard another voice from heaven saying, (MQ)“Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. (MR)For her sins [bq]have reached to heaven, and (MS)God has remembered her iniquities. (MT)Render to her just as she rendered [br]to you, and repay her double according to her works; (MU)in the cup which she has mixed, (MV)mix double for her. (MW)In the measure that she glorified herself and lived [bs]luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as (MX)queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.’ Therefore her plagues will come (MY)in one day—death and mourning and famine. And (MZ)she will be utterly burned with fire, (NA)for strong is the Lord God who [bt]judges her.

The World Mourns Babylon’s Fall

(NB)“The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her (NC)will weep and lament for her, (ND)when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, (NE)‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! (NF)For in one hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And (NG)the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore: 12 (NH)merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble; 13 and cinnamon and incense, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies and (NI)souls of men. 14 The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and all the things which are rich and splendid have [bu]gone from you, and you shall find them no more at all. 15 The merchants of these things, who became rich by her, will stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, 16 and saying, ‘Alas, alas, (NJ)that great city (NK)that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls! 17 (NL)For in one hour such great riches [bv]came to nothing.’ (NM)Every shipmaster, all who travel by ship, sailors, and as many as trade on the sea, stood at a distance 18 (NN)and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, (NO)‘What is like this great city?’

19 (NP)“They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! (NQ)For in one hour she [bw]is made desolate.’

20 (NR)“Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you [bx]holy apostles and prophets, for (NS)God has avenged you on her!”

Finality of Babylon’s Fall

21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, (NT)“Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and (NU)shall not be found anymore. 22 (NV)The sound of harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you anymore. No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore. 23 (NW)The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, (NX)and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For (NY)your merchants were the great men of the earth, (NZ)for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived. 24 And (OA)in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who (OB)were slain on the earth.”

Heaven Exults over Babylon

19 After these things (OC)I [by]heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Alleluia! (OD)Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to [bz]the Lord our God! For (OE)true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He (OF)has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.” Again they said, “Alleluia! (OG)Her smoke rises up forever and ever!” And (OH)the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sat on the throne, saying, (OI)“Amen! Alleluia!” Then a voice came from the throne, saying, (OJ)“Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, (OK)both[ca] small and great!”

(OL)And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For (OM)the[cb] Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for (ON)the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And (OO)to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, (OP)for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

Then he said to me, “Write: (OQ)‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, (OR)“These are the true sayings of God.” 10 And (OS)I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, (OT)“See that you do not do that! I am your (OU)fellow servant, and of your brethren (OV)who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the (OW)testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Christ on a White Horse

11 (OX)Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, (OY)a white horse. And He who sat on him was called (OZ)Faithful and True, and (PA)in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 (PB)His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. (PC)He [cc]had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 (PD)He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called (PE)The Word of God. 14 (PF)And the armies in heaven, (PG)clothed in [cd]fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now (PH)out of His mouth goes a [ce]sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And (PI)He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. (PJ)He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And (PK)He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:

(PL)KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS.

The Beast and His Armies Defeated

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, (PM)“Come and gather together for the [cf]supper of the great God, 18 (PN)that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, [cg]free and slave, both small and great.”

19 (PO)And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 (PP)Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and (PQ)those who worshiped his image. (PR)These two were cast alive into the lake of fire (PS)burning with brimstone. 21 And the rest (PT)were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. (PU)And all the birds (PV)were filled with their flesh.

144,000 Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners(A) of the earth, holding back the four winds(B) of the earth to prevent(C) any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal(D) of the living God.(E) He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea:(F) “Do not harm(G) the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads(H) of the servants of our God.” Then I heard the number(I) of those who were sealed: 144,000(J) from all the tribes of Israel.

From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,

from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,

from the tribe of Gad 12,000,

from the tribe of Asher 12,000,

from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000,

from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000,

from the tribe of Simeon 12,000,

from the tribe of Levi 12,000,

from the tribe of Issachar 12,000,

from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,

from the tribe of Joseph 12,000,

from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.

The Great Multitude in White Robes

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,(K) standing before the throne(L) and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes(M) and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God,(N)
who sits on the throne,(O)
and to the Lamb.”

11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders(P) and the four living creatures.(Q) They fell down on their faces(R) before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:

“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”(S)

13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes(T)—who are they, and where did they come from?”

14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes(U) and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.(V) 15 Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God(W)
and serve him(X) day and night in his temple;(Y)
and he who sits on the throne(Z)
will shelter them with his presence.(AA)
16 ‘Never again will they hunger;
    never again will they thirst.(AB)
The sun will not beat down on them,’[a]
    nor any scorching heat.(AC)
17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne
    will be their shepherd;(AD)
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’[b](AE)
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’[c](AF)

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When he opened the seventh seal,(AG) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels(AH) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(AI)

Another angel,(AJ) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(AK) on the golden altar(AL) in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(AM) from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(AN) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(AO) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(AP)

The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(AQ) prepared to sound them.

The first angel(AR) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(AS) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(AT) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(AU)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(AV) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(AW) of the sea turned into blood,(AX) a third(AY) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(AZ) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(BA) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[d] A third(BB) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(BC)

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(BD) of them turned dark.(BE) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(BF)

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(BG) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(BH) to the inhabitants of the earth,(BI) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(BJ) The star was given the key(BK) to the shaft of the Abyss.(BL) When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(BM) The sun and sky were darkened(BN) by the smoke from the Abyss.(BO) And out of the smoke locusts(BP) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(BQ) of the earth. They were told not to harm(BR) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(BS) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(BT) They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(BU) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(BV) when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(BW)

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(BX) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(BY) Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(BZ) They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(CA) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(CB) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(CC) whose name in Hebrew(CD) is Abaddon(CE) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(CF)

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(CG) of the golden altar that is before God.(CH) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(CI) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(CJ) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(CK) to kill a third(CL) of mankind.(CM) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(CN)

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(CO) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(CP) 18 A third(CQ) of mankind was killed(CR) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(CS) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(CT) of the work of their hands;(CU) they did not stop worshiping demons,(CV) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(CW) 21 Nor did they repent(CX) of their murders, their magic arts,(CY) their sexual immorality(CZ) or their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel(DA) coming down from heaven.(DB) He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow(DC) above his head; his face was like the sun,(DD) and his legs were like fiery pillars.(DE) He was holding a little scroll,(DF) which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land,(DG) and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion.(DH) When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders(DI) spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write;(DJ) but I heard a voice from heaven(DK) say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”(DL)

Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land(DM) raised his right hand to heaven.(DN) And he swore(DO) by him who lives for ever and ever,(DP) who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it,(DQ) and said, “There will be no more delay!(DR) But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet,(DS) the mystery(DT) of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”(DU)

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven(DV) spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll(DW) that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’[e](DX) 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth,(DY) but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy(DZ) again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”(EA)

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod(EB) and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court;(EC) do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.(ED) They will trample on the holy city(EE) for 42 months.(EF) And I will appoint my two witnesses,(EG) and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,(EH) clothed in sackcloth.”(EI) They are “the two olive trees”(EJ) and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[f](EK) If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.(EL) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.(EM) They have power to shut up the heavens(EN) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;(EO) and they have power to turn the waters into blood(EP) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(EQ) that comes up from the Abyss(ER) will attack them,(ES) and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(ET)—which is figuratively called Sodom(EU) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(EV) For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(EW) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(EX) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(EY) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(EZ) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(FA) the breath[g] of life from God entered them,(FB) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(FC) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(FD) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(FE) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(FF) to the God of heaven.(FG)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(FH)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(FI) and there were loud voices(FJ) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(FK)
and he will reign for ever and ever.”(FL)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(FM) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(FN) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(FO) to you, Lord God Almighty,(FP)
the One who is and who was,(FQ)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(FR)
18 The nations were angry,(FS)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(FT)
and for rewarding your servants the prophets(FU)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(FV)
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(FW) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(FX) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(FY) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(FZ)

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign(GA) appeared in heaven:(GB) a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars(GC) on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain(GD) as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven:(GE) an enormous red dragon(GF) with seven heads(GG) and ten horns(GH) and seven crowns(GI) on its heads. Its tail swept a third(GJ) of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.(GK) The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child(GL) the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[h](GM) And her child was snatched up(GN) to God and to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.(GO)

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael(GP) and his angels fought against the dragon,(GQ) and the dragon and his angels(GR) fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent(GS) called the devil,(GT) or Satan,(GU) who leads the whole world astray.(GV) He was hurled to the earth,(GW) and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven(GX) say:

“Now have come the salvation(GY) and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,(GZ)
who accuses them before our God day and night,
    has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over(HA) him
by the blood of the Lamb(HB)
and by the word of their testimony;(HC)
they did not love their lives so much
    as to shrink from death.(HD)
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens(HE)
and you who dwell in them!
But woe(HF) to the earth and the sea,(HG)
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

13 When the dragon(HH) saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.(HI) 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,(HJ) so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,(HK) out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent(HL) spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war(HM) against the rest of her offspring(HN)—those who keep God’s commands(HO) and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.(HP)

The Beast out of the Sea

13 The dragon[i] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea.(HQ) It had ten horns and seven heads,(HR) with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.(HS) The beast I saw resembled a leopard,(HT) but had feet like those of a bear(HU) and a mouth like that of a lion.(HV) The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.(HW) One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed.(HX) The whole world was filled with wonder(HY) and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like(HZ) the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies(IA) and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.(IB) It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.(IC) It was given power to wage war(ID) against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.(IE) All inhabitants of the earth(IF) will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,(IG) the Lamb(IH) who was slain from the creation of the world.[j](II)

Whoever has ears, let them hear.(IJ)

10 “If anyone is to go into captivity,
    into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed[k] with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”[l](IK)

This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness(IL) on the part of God’s people.(IM)

The Beast out of the Earth

11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth.(IN) It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.(IO) 12 It exercised all the authority(IP) of the first beast on its behalf,(IQ) and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,(IR) whose fatal wound had been healed.(IS) 13 And it performed great signs,(IT) even causing fire to come down from heaven(IU) to the earth in full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs(IV) it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived(IW) the inhabitants of the earth.(IX) It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.(IY) 15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship(IZ) the image to be killed.(JA) 16 It also forced all people, great and small,(JB) rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,(JC) 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,(JD) which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.(JE)

18 This calls for wisdom.(JF) Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[m](JG) That number is 666.

The Lamb and the 144,000

14 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb,(JH) standing on Mount Zion,(JI) and with him 144,000(JJ) who had his name and his Father’s name(JK) written on their foreheads.(JL) And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters(JM) and like a loud peal of thunder.(JN) The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps.(JO) And they sang a new song(JP) before the throne and before the four living creatures(JQ) and the elders.(JR) No one could learn the song except the 144,000(JS) who had been redeemed from the earth. These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins.(JT) They follow the Lamb wherever he goes.(JU) They were purchased from among mankind(JV) and offered as firstfruits(JW) to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths;(JX) they are blameless.(JY)

The Three Angels

Then I saw another angel flying in midair,(JZ) and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth(KA)—to every nation, tribe, language and people.(KB) He said in a loud voice, “Fear God(KC) and give him glory,(KD) because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made(KE) the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”(KF)

A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’[n](KG) which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”(KH)

A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast(KI) and its image(KJ) and receives its mark on their forehead(KK) or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury,(KL) which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath.(KM) They will be tormented with burning sulfur(KN) in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.(KO) There will be no rest day or night(KP) for those who worship the beast and its image,(KQ) or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”(KR) 12 This calls for patient endurance(KS) on the part of the people of God(KT) who keep his commands(KU) and remain faithful to Jesus.

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord(KV) from now on.”

“Yes,” says the Spirit,(KW) “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress

14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud,(KX) and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man[o](KY) with a crown(KZ) of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple(LA) and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle(LB) and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest(LC) of the earth is ripe.” 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle.(LD) 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar(LE) and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle(LF) and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath.(LG) 20 They were trampled in the winepress(LH) outside the city,(LI) and blood(LJ) flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.[p]

Seven Angels With Seven Plagues

15 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign:(LK) seven angels(LL) with the seven last plagues(LM)—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. And I saw what looked like a sea of glass(LN) glowing with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious(LO) over the beast(LP) and its image(LQ) and over the number of its name.(LR) They held harps(LS) given them by God and sang the song of God’s servant(LT) Moses(LU) and of the Lamb:(LV)

“Great and marvelous are your deeds,(LW)
    Lord God Almighty.(LX)
Just and true are your ways,(LY)
    King of the nations.[q]
Who will not fear you, Lord,(LZ)
and bring glory to your name?(MA)
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
    and worship before you,(MB)
for your righteous acts(MC) have been revealed.”[r]

After this I looked, and I saw in heaven the temple(MD)—that is, the tabernacle of the covenant law(ME)—and it was opened.(MF) Out of the temple(MG) came the seven angels with the seven plagues.(MH) They were dressed in clean, shining linen(MI) and wore golden sashes around their chests.(MJ) Then one of the four living creatures(MK) gave to the seven angels(ML) seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever.(MM) And the temple was filled with smoke(MN) from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple(MO) until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

The Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple(MP) saying to the seven angels,(MQ) “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”(MR)

The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land,(MS) and ugly, festering sores(MT) broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.(MU)

The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead person, and every living thing in the sea died.(MV)

The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water,(MW) and they became blood.(MX) Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:

“You are just in these judgments,(MY) O Holy One,(MZ)
you who are and who were;(NA)
for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,(NB)
and you have given them blood to drink(NC) as they deserve.”

And I heard the altar(ND) respond:

“Yes, Lord God Almighty,(NE)
true and just are your judgments.”(NF)

The fourth angel(NG) poured out his bowl on the sun,(NH) and the sun was allowed to scorch people with fire.(NI) They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God,(NJ) who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent(NK) and glorify him.(NL)

10 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast,(NM) and its kingdom was plunged into darkness.(NN) People gnawed their tongues in agony 11 and cursed(NO) the God of heaven(NP) because of their pains and their sores,(NQ) but they refused to repent of what they had done.(NR)

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates,(NS) and its water was dried up to prepare the way(NT) for the kings from the East.(NU) 13 Then I saw three impure spirits(NV) that looked like frogs;(NW) they came out of the mouth of the dragon,(NX) out of the mouth of the beast(NY) and out of the mouth of the false prophet.(NZ) 14 They are demonic spirits(OA) that perform signs,(OB) and they go out to the kings of the whole world,(OC) to gather them for the battle(OD) on the great day(OE) of God Almighty.

15 “Look, I come like a thief!(OF) Blessed is the one who stays awake(OG) and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”(OH)

16 Then they gathered the kings together(OI) to the place that in Hebrew(OJ) is called Armageddon.(OK)

17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air,(OL) and out of the temple(OM) came a loud voice(ON) from the throne, saying, “It is done!”(OO) 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder(OP) and a severe earthquake.(OQ) No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth,(OR) so tremendous was the quake. 19 The great city(OS) split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered(OT) Babylon the Great(OU) and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.(OV) 20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.(OW) 21 From the sky huge hailstones,(OX) each weighing about a hundred pounds,[s] fell on people. And they cursed God(OY) on account of the plague of hail,(OZ) because the plague was so terrible.

Babylon, the Prostitute on the Beast

17 One of the seven angels(PA) who had the seven bowls(PB) came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment(PC) of the great prostitute,(PD) who sits by many waters.(PE) With her the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.”(PF)

Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit(PG) into a wilderness.(PH) There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet(PI) beast that was covered with blasphemous names(PJ) and had seven heads and ten horns.(PK) The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls.(PL) She held a golden cup(PM) in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.(PN) The name written on her forehead was a mystery:(PO)

babylon the great(PP)

the mother of prostitutes(PQ)

and of the abominations of the earth.

I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people,(PR) the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.

When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery(PS) of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.(PT) The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and yet will come up out of the Abyss(PU) and go to its destruction.(PV) The inhabitants of the earth(PW) whose names have not been written in the book of life(PX) from the creation of the world will be astonished(PY) when they see the beast, because it once was, now is not, and yet will come.

“This calls for a mind with wisdom.(PZ) The seven heads(QA) are seven hills on which the woman sits. 10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not,(QB) is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.

12 “The ten horns(QC) you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour(QD) will receive authority as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast.(QE) 14 They will wage war(QF) against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over(QG) them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings(QH)—and with him will be his called, chosen(QI) and faithful followers.”

15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters(QJ) you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.(QK) 16 The beast and the ten horns(QL) you saw will hate the prostitute.(QM) They will bring her to ruin(QN) and leave her naked;(QO) they will eat her flesh(QP) and burn her with fire.(QQ) 17 For God has put it into their hearts(QR) to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority,(QS) until God’s words are fulfilled.(QT) 18 The woman you saw is the great city(QU) that rules over the kings of the earth.”

Lament Over Fallen Babylon

18 After this I saw another angel(QV) coming down from heaven.(QW) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(QX) With a mighty voice he shouted:

“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[t](QY)
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(QZ)
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(RA)
For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.(RB)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,(RC)
and the merchants of the earth grew rich(RD) from her excessive luxuries.”(RE)

Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment

Then I heard another voice from heaven say:

“‘Come out of her, my people,’[u](RF)
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(RG)
for her sins are piled up to heaven,(RH)
and God has remembered(RI) her crimes.
Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back(RJ) double(RK) for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(RL)
Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(RM)
In her heart she boasts,
    ‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[v]
    I will never mourn.’(RN)
Therefore in one day(RO) her plagues will overtake her:
    death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(RP)
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(RQ) and shared her luxury(RR) see the smoke of her burning,(RS) they will weep and mourn over her.(RT) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(RU) and cry:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(RV)
    you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour(RW) your doom has come!’

11 “The merchants(RX) of the earth will weep and mourn(RY) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(RZ) 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(SA) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(SB)

14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her(SC) will stand far off,(SD) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn(SE) 16 and cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(SF)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(SG)
17 In one hour(SH) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(SI)

“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(SJ) will stand far off.(SK) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(SL) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(SM)?’(SN) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(SO) and with weeping and mourning(SP) cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(SQ)
where all who had ships on the sea
    became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(SR)

20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(SS)
    Rejoice, you people of God!
    Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(ST)

The Finality of Babylon’s Doom

21 Then a mighty angel(SU) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(SV) and said:

“With such violence
the great city(SW) of Babylon will be thrown down,
    never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(SX)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(SY)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(SZ)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(TA)
By your magic spell(TB) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(TC)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(TD)

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon’s Fall

19 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude(TE) in heaven shouting:

“Hallelujah!(TF)
Salvation(TG) and glory and power(TH) belong to our God,
for true and just are his judgments.(TI)
He has condemned the great prostitute(TJ)
who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”(TK)

And again they shouted:

“Hallelujah!(TL)
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”(TM)

The twenty-four elders(TN) and the four living creatures(TO) fell down(TP) and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:

“Amen, Hallelujah!”(TQ)

Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

“Praise our God,
    all you his servants,(TR)
you who fear him,
    both great and small!”(TS)

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude,(TT) like the roar of rushing waters(TU) and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

“Hallelujah!(TV)
For our Lord God Almighty(TW) reigns.(TX)
Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!(TY)
For the wedding of the Lamb(TZ) has come,
and his bride(UA) has made herself ready.
Fine linen,(UB) bright and clean,
    was given her to wear.”

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts(UC) of God’s holy people.)

Then the angel said to me,(UD) “Write this:(UE) Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!”(UF) And he added, “These are the true words of God.”(UG)

10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him.(UH) But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!(UI) For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”(UJ)

The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast

11 I saw heaven standing open(UK) and there before me was a white horse, whose rider(UL) is called Faithful and True.(UM) With justice he judges and wages war.(UN) 12 His eyes are like blazing fire,(UO) and on his head are many crowns.(UP) He has a name written on him(UQ) that no one knows but he himself.(UR) 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,(US) and his name is the Word of God.(UT) 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,(UU) white(UV) and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword(UW) with which to strike down(UX) the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[w](UY) He treads the winepress(UZ) of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:(VA)

king of kings and lord of lords.(VB)

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds(VC) flying in midair,(VD) “Come,(VE) gather together for the great supper of God,(VF) 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people,(VG) free and slave,(VH) great and small.”(VI)

19 Then I saw the beast(VJ) and the kings of the earth(VK) and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse(VL) and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet(VM) who had performed the signs(VN) on its behalf.(VO) With these signs he had deluded(VP) those who had received the mark of the beast(VQ) and worshiped its image.(VR) The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake(VS) of burning sulfur.(VT) 21 The rest were killed with the sword(VU) coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse,(VV) and all the birds(VW) gorged themselves on their flesh.
