They Have Afflicted Me from My Youth

A Song of ^(A)Ascents.

129 “Greatly^[a] have they ^(B)afflicted me ^(C)from my youth”—
    ^(D)let Israel now say—
²“Greatly have they ^(E)afflicted me ^(F)from my youth,
    ^(G)yet they have not prevailed against me.
³^(H)The plowers plowed ^(I)upon my back;
    they made long their furrows.”
⁴The Lord is righteous;
    he has cut ^(J)the cords of the wicked.
⁵May all who hate Zion
    be ^(K)put to shame and turned backward!
⁶Let them be like ^(L)the grass on the housetops,
    which ^(M)withers before it grows up,
⁷with which the reaper does not fill his hand
    nor the binder of sheaves his arms,
⁸nor do those who pass by say,
    ^(N)“The blessing of the Lord be upon you!
    We ^(O)bless you in the name of the Lord!”

130 Out of ^(Q)the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
² O Lord, hear my voice!
^(R)Let your ears be attentive
to ^(S)the voice of my pleas for mercy!

³If you, O Lord, should ^(T)mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could ^(U)stand?
⁴But with you there is ^(V)forgiveness,
^(W)that you may be feared.

⁵I ^(X)wait for the Lord, ^(Y)my soul waits,
    and ^(Z)in his word I hope;
⁶my soul ^(AA)waits for the Lord
    more than ^(AB)watchmen for ^(AC)the morning,
    more than watchmen for the morning.

⁷O Israel, ^(AD)hope in the Lord!
    For ^(AE)with the Lord there is steadfast love,
    and with him is plentiful redemption.
⁸And he will ^(AF)redeem Israel
    from all his iniquities.

I Have Calmed and Quieted My Soul

131 O Lord, my heart is not ^(AH)lifted up;
    my eyes are not ^(AI)raised too high;
I do not ^(AJ)occupy myself with things
    too great and ^(AK)too marvelous for me.
²But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
    like a weaned ^(AL)child with its mother;
    like a weaned child is my soul within me.

³^(AM)O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.

Head Coverings

²Now I commend you ^(B)because you remember me in everything and ^(C)maintain the traditions ^(D)even as I delivered them to you. ³But I want you to understand that ^(E)the head of every man is Christ, ^(F)the head of a wife^[a] is her husband,^[b] and ^(G)the head of Christ is God. ⁴Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, ⁵but every wife^[c] who prays or ^(H)prophesies ^(I)with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same ^(J)as if her head were shaven. ⁶For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. ⁷For a man ought not to cover his head, since ^(K)he is the image and glory of God, but ^(L)woman is the glory of man. ⁸For ^(M)man was not made from woman, but woman from man. ⁹Neither was man created for woman, but ^(N)woman for man. ¹⁰That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.^[d] ¹¹Nevertheless, ^(O)in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; ¹²for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And ^(P)all things are from God. ¹³Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? ¹⁴Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, ¹⁵but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. ¹⁶^(Q)If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do ^(R)the churches of God.
