Psalm 100

A psalm. For giving grateful praise.

Shout for joy(A) to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord(B) with gladness;
    come before him(C) with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.(D)
    It is he who made us,(E) and we are his[a];
    we are his people,(F) the sheep of his pasture.(G)

Enter his gates with thanksgiving(H)
    and his courts(I) with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.(J)
For the Lord is good(K) and his love endures forever;(L)
    his faithfulness(M) continues through all generations.

Psalm 101

Of David. A psalm.

I will sing of your love(N) and justice;
    to you, Lord, I will sing praise.
I will be careful to lead a blameless life(O)
    when will you come to me?

I will conduct the affairs(P) of my house
    with a blameless heart.
I will not look with approval
    on anything that is vile.(Q)

I hate what faithless people do;(R)
    I will have no part in it.
The perverse of heart(S) shall be far from me;
    I will have nothing to do with what is evil.

Whoever slanders their neighbor(T) in secret,
    I will put to silence;
whoever has haughty eyes(U) and a proud heart,
    I will not tolerate.

My eyes will be on the faithful in the land,
    that they may dwell with me;
the one whose walk is blameless(V)
    will minister to me.

No one who practices deceit
    will dwell in my house;
no one who speaks falsely
    will stand in my presence.

Every morning(W) I will put to silence
    all the wicked(X) in the land;
I will cut off every evildoer(Y)
    from the city of the Lord.(Z)

Psalm 102[b]

A prayer of an afflicted person who has grown weak and pours out a lament before the Lord.

Hear my prayer,(AA) Lord;
    let my cry for help(AB) come to you.
Do not hide your face(AC) from me
    when I am in distress.
Turn your ear(AD) to me;
    when I call, answer me quickly.

For my days vanish like smoke;(AE)
    my bones(AF) burn like glowing embers.
My heart is blighted and withered like grass;(AG)
    I forget to eat my food.(AH)
In my distress I groan aloud(AI)
    and am reduced to skin and bones.
I am like a desert owl,(AJ)
    like an owl among the ruins.
I lie awake;(AK) I have become
    like a bird alone(AL) on a roof.
All day long my enemies(AM) taunt me;(AN)
    those who rail against me use my name as a curse.(AO)
For I eat ashes(AP) as my food
    and mingle my drink with tears(AQ)
10 because of your great wrath,(AR)
    for you have taken me up and thrown me aside.
11 My days are like the evening shadow;(AS)
    I wither(AT) away like grass.

12 But you, Lord, sit enthroned forever;(AU)
    your renown endures(AV) through all generations.(AW)
13 You will arise(AX) and have compassion(AY) on Zion,
    for it is time(AZ) to show favor(BA) to her;
    the appointed time(BB) has come.
14 For her stones are dear to your servants;
    her very dust moves them to pity.
15 The nations will fear(BC) the name of the Lord,
    all the kings(BD) of the earth will revere your glory.
16 For the Lord will rebuild Zion(BE)
    and appear in his glory.(BF)
17 He will respond to the prayer(BG) of the destitute;
    he will not despise their plea.

18 Let this be written(BH) for a future generation,
    that a people not yet created(BI) may praise the Lord:
19 “The Lord looked down(BJ) from his sanctuary on high,
    from heaven he viewed the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners(BK)
    and release those condemned to death.”
21 So the name of the Lord will be declared(BL) in Zion
    and his praise(BM) in Jerusalem
22 when the peoples and the kingdoms
    assemble to worship(BN) the Lord.

23 In the course of my life[c] he broke my strength;
    he cut short my days.(BO)
24 So I said:
“Do not take me away, my God, in the midst of my days;
    your years go on(BP) through all generations.
25 In the beginning(BQ) you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens(BR) are the work of your hands.(BS)
26 They will perish,(BT) but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
    and they will be discarded.
27 But you remain the same,(BU)
    and your years will never end.(BV)
28 The children of your servants(BW) will live in your presence;
    their descendants(BX) will be established before you.”

  2. Psalm 102:1 In Hebrew texts 102:1-28 is numbered 102:2-29.
  3. Psalm 102:23 Or By his power

100 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.

Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

101 I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O Lord, will I sing.

I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.

Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.

He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the Lord.

102 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come unto thee.

Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.

For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth.

My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread.

By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin.

I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.

I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.

Mine enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me.

For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping.

10 Because of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast lifted me up, and cast me down.

11 My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass.

12 But thou, O Lord, shall endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations.

13 Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.

14 For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.

15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.

16 When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.

17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the Lord.

19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the Lord behold the earth;

20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;

21 To declare the name of the Lord in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem;

22 When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.

24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.

25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:

27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

28 The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(A) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(B) and have put out of your fellowship(C) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(D) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(E) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(F) to Satan(G) for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(H)

Your boasting is not good.(I) Don’t you know that a little yeast(J) leavens the whole batch of dough?(K) Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.(L) Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread(M) of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate(N) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world(O) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[c](P) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater(Q) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.(R)

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside(S) the church? Are you not to judge those inside?(T) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[d](U)

Footnotes

  1. 1 Corinthians 5:5 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit.
  2. 1 Corinthians 5:5 Or of his body
  3. 1 Corinthians 5:11 The Greek word for brother or sister (adelphos) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God’s family; also in 8:11, 13.
  4. 1 Corinthians 5:13 Deut. 13:5; 17:7; 19:19; 21:21; 22:21,24; 24:7

It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
