5 The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his god.(A) They threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load.(B) Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel and had stretched out and fallen into a deep sleep.(C)
6 The captain approached him and said, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up! Call to your god.[a](D) Maybe this god will consider us,(E) and we won’t perish.”

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call(B) on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”(C)
