The Nations Exhorted to Praise God.

For the music director; with stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.

67 God be gracious to us and (A)bless us,
And (B)cause His face to shine [a]upon us— Selah
That (C)Your way may be known on the earth,
(D)Your salvation among all nations.
May the (E)peoples praise You, God;
May all the peoples praise You.
May the (F)nations be glad and sing for joy;
For You will (G)judge the peoples with fairness
And (H)guide the nations on the earth. Selah
May the (I)peoples praise You, God;
May all the peoples praise You.
The (J)earth has yielded its produce;
God, our God, (K)blesses us.
God blesses us,
[b]So that (L)all the ends of the earth may fear Him.

The God of Sinai and of the Sanctuary.

For the music director. A Psalm of David. A Song.

68 [c]May (M)God arise, [d]may His enemies be scattered,
And [e]may those who hate Him flee from His presence.
As (N)smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
As (O)wax melts before a fire,
So the (P)wicked will perish before God.
But the (Q)righteous will be joyful; they will rejoice before God;
Yes, they will rejoice with gladness.
Sing to God, (R)sing praises to His name;
[f](S)Exalt Him who (T)rides through the deserts,
Whose (U)name is [g]the Lord, and be jubilant before Him.

A (V)father of the fatherless and a (W)judge [h]for the widows,
Is God in His (X)holy dwelling.
God [i](Y)makes a home for the lonely;
He (Z)leads out the prisoners into prosperity,
Only (AA)the rebellious live in parched lands.

God, when You (AB)went forth before Your people,
When You (AC)marched through the desert, Selah
The (AD)earth quaked;
The (AE)heavens also dropped rain at the presence of God;
[j](AF)Sinai itself quaked at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
You (AG)made plentiful rain fall, God;
You confirmed Your inheritance when it was [k]parched.
10 Your creatures settled in it;
In Your kindness You (AH)provided for the poor, God.

11 The Lord gives the [l]command;
The (AI)women who proclaim good news are a great army:
12 (AJ)Kings of armies flee, they flee,
And she who remains at home will (AK)divide the spoils!”
13 [m]When you lie down (AL)among the sheepfolds,
You are like the wings of a dove covered with silver,
And its pinions with [n]glistening gold.
14 When the Almighty (AM)scattered the kings [o]there,
It was snowing in (AN)Zalmon.

15 (AO)The mountain of Bashan is a [p]mountain of God;
The mountain of Bashan is a mountain of many peaks.
16 Why do you look with envy, you mountains of many peaks,
At the mountain God has (AP)desired as His dwelling?
Indeed, (AQ)the Lord will dwell there forever.
17 The (AR)chariots of God are [q]myriads, (AS)thousands upon thousands;
[r]The Lord is among them as at Sinai, in holiness.
18 You have (AT)ascended on high, You have (AU)led captive Your captives;
You have received gifts among people,
Even among the rebellious as well, that [s]the Lord God may dwell there.

19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily (AV)bears our burden,
(AW)The God who is our salvation. Selah
20 God is to us a (AX)God of salvation;
And (AY)to [t]God the Lord belong ways of escape [u]from death.
21 God certainly will (AZ)shatter the heads of His enemies,
The hairy [v]head of one who goes about in his guilt.
22 The Lord [w]said, “(BA)I will bring them back from Bashan.
I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,
23 So that [x](BB)your foot may shatter them in blood,
And the tongue of your (BC)dogs may have its portion from your enemies.”

24 They have seen (BD)Your procession, God,
The procession of my God, my King, [y](BE)into the sanctuary.
25 The (BF)singers went on, the musicians after them,
[z]In the midst of the (BG)young women beating tambourines.
26 (BH)Bless God in the congregations,
Even the Lord, you who are of the (BI)fountain of Israel.
27 (BJ)Benjamin, the [aa]youngest, is there, [ab]ruling them,
The leaders of Judah in their company,
The leaders of (BK)Zebulun, the leaders of Naphtali.

28 [ac]Your God has (BL)commanded your strength;
Show Yourself strong, God, You (BM)who acted [ad]in our behalf.
29 [ae]Because of Your temple at Jerusalem
(BN)Kings will bring gifts to You.
30 Rebuke the (BO)animals [af]in the reeds,
The herd of (BP)bulls with the calves of the peoples,
Trampling the pieces of silver;
He has (BQ)scattered the peoples who delight in war.
31 [ag]Messengers will come from (BR)Egypt;
[ah](BS)Cush will quickly stretch out her hands to God.

32 Sing to God, you (BT)kingdoms of the earth,
(BU)Sing praises to the Lord, Selah
33 To Him who (BV)rides upon the [ai](BW)highest heavens, which are from ancient times;
Behold, (BX)He [aj]speaks with His voice, a (BY)mighty voice.
34 (BZ)Ascribe strength to God;
His majesty is over Israel,
And (CA)His strength is in the [ak]skies.
35 [al]God, You are (CB)awesome from Your [am]sanctuary.
The God of Israel Himself (CC)gives strength and power to the people.
(CD)Blessed be God!

A Cry of Distress and a Curse on Adversaries.

For the music director; according to [an]Shoshannim. A Psalm of David.

69 Save me, God,
For the (CE)waters have [ao]threatened my life.
I have sunk in deep (CF)mud, and there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters, and a [ap](CG)flood overflows me.
I am (CH)weary with my crying; my throat is parched;
My (CI)eyes fail while I wait for my God.
Those (CJ)who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would [aq]destroy me (CK)are powerful, those who oppose me with lies;
(CL)What I did not steal, I then have to restore.

God, You know (CM)my foolishness,
And (CN)my guilt is not hidden from You.
May those who wait for You not (CO)be ashamed because of me, Lord [ar]God of armies;
May those who seek You not be dishonored because of me, God of Israel,
Because (CP)for Your sake I have endured disgrace;
(CQ)Dishonor has covered my face.
I have become (CR)estranged [as]from my brothers,
And a stranger to my mother’s sons.
For (CS)zeal for Your house has consumed me,
And (CT)the taunts of those who taunt You have fallen on me.
10 When I wept (CU)in my soul with fasting,
It became my (CV)disgrace.
11 When I made (CW)sackcloth my clothing,
I became (CX)a proverb to them.
12 Those who (CY)sit in the gate talk about me,
And (CZ)songs of mockery by those habitually drunk are about me.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, Lord, (DA)at an acceptable time;
God, in the (DB)greatness of Your mercy,
Answer me with [at]Your saving truth.
14 Rescue me from the (DC)mud and do not let me sink;
May I be (DD)rescued from those who hate me, and from the (DE)depths of water.
15 May the [au](DF)flood of water not overflow me
Nor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the (DG)pit close its mouth on me.

16 Answer me, Lord, for (DH)Your mercy is good;
(DI)According to the greatness of Your compassion, (DJ)turn to me,
17 And (DK)do not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am (DL)in distress; answer me quickly.
18 Come near to my soul and (DM)redeem it;
(DN)Ransom me because of my enemies!
19 You know my (DO)disgrace, my shame, and my dishonor;
All my enemies are [av]known to You.

20 Disgrace has (DP)broken my heart, and I am so sick.
And (DQ)I waited for sympathy, but there was none;
And for (DR)comforters, but I found none.
21 They also gave me [aw](DS)a bitter herb in my food,
And for my thirst they (DT)gave me vinegar to drink.

22 May (DU)their table before them become a snare;
And [ax](DV)when they are at peace, may it become a trap.
23 May their (DW)eyes grow dim so that they cannot see,
And make their (DX)hips shake continually.
24 (DY)Pour out Your indignation on them,
And may Your burning anger overtake them.
25 May their [ay](DZ)camp be desolated;
May there be none living in their tents.
26 For they have (EA)persecuted him whom (EB)You Yourself struck,
And they tell of the pain of those whom (EC)You have [az]wounded.
27 Add (ED)guilt to their guilt,
And (EE)may they not come into (EF)Your righteousness.
28 May they be (EG)wiped out of the (EH)book of life,
And may they not be [ba](EI)recorded with the righteous.

29 But I am (EJ)afflicted and in pain;
[bb]May Your salvation, God, (EK)set me safely on high.
30 I will (EL)praise the name of God with song,
And (EM)exalt Him with (EN)thanksgiving.
31 And it will (EO)please the Lord better than an ox
Or bull with horns and hoofs.
32 The (EP)humble [bc]have seen it and are glad;
You who seek God, (EQ)let your heart [bd]revive.
33 For (ER)the Lord hears the needy,
And (ES)does not despise those of His who are prisoners.

34 (ET)Heaven and earth shall praise Him,
The seas and (EU)everything that moves in them.
35 For God will (EV)save Zion and (EW)build the cities of Judah,
So that they may live there and (EX)possess it.
36 The [be](EY)descendants of His servants will inherit it,
And those who love His name (EZ)will live in it.

Prayer for Help against Persecutors.

For the music director. A Psalm of David; for a memorial.

70 (FA)God, hurry to save me;
Lord, hurry to help me!
(FB)May those who seek my [bf]life
Be put to shame and humiliated;
May those who delight [bg]in my harm
Be turned back and dishonored.
(FC)May those who say, “Aha, aha!” be [bh]turned back
Because of their shame.

May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
And may those who love Your salvation say continually,
“May God be exalted!”
But (FD)I am afflicted and needy;
(FE)Hurry to me, God!
You are my help and my savior;
Lord, do not delay.

Prayer of an Old Man for Rescue.

71 (FF)In You, Lord, I have taken refuge;
Let me never be put to shame.
(FG)In Your righteousness rescue me and save me;
(FH)Extend Your ear to me and help me.
(FI)Be to me a rock of (FJ)dwelling to which I may continually come;
You have given the (FK)commandment to save me,
For You are (FL)my rock and my fortress.
(FM)Save me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
From the [bi]grasp of the wrongdoer and the ruthless,
For You are my (FN)hope;
Lord [bj]God, You are my (FO)confidence from my youth.
I have (FP)leaned on you since my birth;
You are He who (FQ)took me from my mother’s womb;
My (FR)praise is continually [bk]of You.

I have become a (FS)marvel to many,
For You are (FT)my strong refuge.
My (FU)mouth is filled with Your praise
And with (FV)Your glory all day long.
Do not cast me away at the (FW)time of my old age;
Do not abandon me when my strength fails.
10 For my enemies have spoken [bl]against me;
And those who (FX)watch for my [bm]life (FY)have consulted together,
11 Saying, “(FZ)God has abandoned him;
Pursue and seize him, for there is (GA)no one to save him.”

12 God, (GB)do not be far from me;
My God, (GC)hurry to my aid!
13 May those who are enemies of my soul be (GD)put to shame and consumed;
May they be (GE)covered with disgrace and dishonor, who (GF)seek [bn]to injure me.
14 But as for me, I will (GG)wait continually,
And will [bo](GH)praise You yet more and more.
15 My (GI)mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And of (GJ)Your salvation all day long;
For I (GK)do not know the art of writing.
16 I will come (GL)with the mighty deeds of the Lord [bp]God;
I will (GM)make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone.

17 God, You (GN)have taught me from my youth,
And I still (GO)declare Your wondrous deeds.
18 And even when I am (GP)old and gray, God, do not abandon me,
Until I (GQ)declare Your [bq]strength to this generation,
Your power to all who are to come.
19 [br]For Your (GR)righteousness, God, reaches to the [bs]heavens,
You who have (GS)done great things;
God, (GT)who is like You?
20 You who have (GU)shown [bt]me many troubles and distresses
Will (GV)revive [bu]me again,
And will bring [bv]me up again (GW)from the depths of the earth.
21 May You increase my (GX)greatness
And turn to (GY)comfort me.

22 I will also praise You with [bw](GZ)a harp,
And Your [bx]truth, my God;
I will sing praises to You with the (HA)lyre,
(HB)Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips will (HC)shout for joy when I sing praises to You;
And my (HD)soul, which You have redeemed.
24 My (HE)tongue also will tell of Your righteousness all day long;
For they are (HF)put to shame, for they are humiliated who seek [by]my harm.

The Reign of the Righteous King.

A Psalm of Solomon.

72 Give the king (HG)Your judgments, God,
And (HH)Your righteousness to the king’s son.
[bz]May [ca]he (HI)judge Your people with righteousness
And [cb](HJ)Your afflicted with justice.
[cc]May the mountains bring [cd](HK)peace to the people,
And the hills, in righteousness.
[ce]May he (HL)vindicate the [cf]afflicted of the people,
Save the children of the needy,
And crush the oppressor.

[cg]May they fear You (HM)while the sun shines,
And [ch]as long as the moon shines, throughout all generations.
[ci]May he come down (HN)like rain upon the mown grass,
Like (HO)showers that water the earth.
[cj]May the (HP)righteous flourish in his days,
As well as an (HQ)abundance of peace, until the moon is no more.

May he also rule (HR)from sea to sea,
And from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.
[ck]May (HS)the nomads of the desert (HT)bow before him,
And his enemies (HU)lick the dust.
10 [cl]May the kings of (HV)Tarshish and of the [cm](HW)islands bring gifts;
May the kings of (HX)Sheba and (HY)Seba (HZ)offer tributes.
11 [cn]And may all (IA)kings bow down before him,
All (IB)nations serve him.

12 For he will (IC)save the needy when he cries for help,
The [co]afflicted also, and him who has no helper.
13 He will have (ID)compassion on the poor and needy,
And he will save the [cp]lives of the needy.
14 He will [cq](IE)rescue their [cr]life from oppression and violence,
And their blood will be (IF)precious in his sight;
15 So may he live, and may the (IG)gold of Sheba be given to him;
And [cs]they are to pray for him continually;
[ct]They are to bless him all day long.

16 May there be abundance of grain on the earth on top of the mountains;
Its fruit will wave like the cedars of (IH)Lebanon;
And may those from the city flourish like the (II)vegetation of the earth.
17 May his (IJ)name endure forever;
May his name produce descendants [cu](IK)as long as the sun shines;
And may people (IL)wish blessings on themselves by him;
(IM)May all nations call him blessed.

18 (IN)Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel,
Who alone (IO)works wonders.
19 And blessed be His (IP)glorious name forever;
And may the whole (IQ)earth be filled with His glory.
(IR)Amen and Amen.

20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

BOOK 3

The End of the Wicked Contrasted with That of the Righteous.

A Psalm of Asaph.

73 God certainly is (IS)good to Israel,
To those who are (IT)pure in heart!
But as for me, (IU)my feet came close to stumbling,
My steps [cv]had almost slipped.
For I was (IV)envious of the [cw]arrogant
As I saw the (IW)prosperity of the wicked.
For there are no pains in their death,
And their belly is fat.
They are (IX)not [cx]in trouble like other people,
Nor are they (IY)tormented together with the rest of mankind.
Therefore arrogance is (IZ)their necklace;
The (JA)garment of violence covers them.
Their eye [cy]bulges from (JB)fatness;
The imaginations of their heart overflow.
They (JC)mock and [cz]wickedly speak of oppression;
They (JD)speak from on high.
They have (JE)set their mouth [da]against the heavens,
And their tongue [db]parades through the earth.

10 Therefore [dc]his people return here,
And (JF)abundant waters are drunk by them.
11 They say, “(JG)How does God know?
And is there knowledge [dd]with the Most High?”
12 Behold, (JH)these are the wicked;
And always (JI)at ease, they have increased in wealth.
13 Surely (JJ)in vain I have [de]kept my heart pure
And (JK)washed my hands in innocence;
14 For I have been stricken (JL)all day long,
And [df](JM)punished every morning.

15 If I had said, “I will speak this way,”
Behold, I would have betrayed the (JN)generation of Your children.
16 When I (JO)thought of understanding this,
It was [dg]troublesome in my sight
17 Until I entered the [dh](JP)sanctuary of God;
Then I perceived their (JQ)end.
18 You indeed put them on (JR)slippery ground;
You dropped them into [di](JS)ruin.
19 How they are [dj](JT)destroyed in a moment!
They are utterly swept away by (JU)sudden terrors!
20 Like a (JV)dream when one awakes,
Lord, when (JW)stirred, You will (JX)despise their image.

21 When my (JY)heart was embittered
And I was (JZ)pierced [dk]within,
22 Then I was (KA)stupid and ignorant;
I was like an (KB)animal [dl]before You.
23 Nevertheless (KC)I am continually with You;
You have taken hold of my right hand.
24 You will (KD)guide me with Your plan,
And afterward (KE)receive me [dm]to glory.

25 (KF)Whom do I have in heaven but You?
And with You, I desire nothing on earth.
26 My (KG)flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the [dn]strength of my heart and my (KH)portion forever.
27 For, behold, (KI)those who are far from You will (KJ)perish;
You have destroyed all those who [do](KK)are unfaithful to You.
28 But as for me, (KL)the nearness of God is good for me;
I have made the Lord [dp]God my (KM)refuge,
So that I may (KN)tell of all Your works.

An Appeal against the Devastation of the Land by the Enemy.

A [dq]Maskil of Asaph.

74 God, why have You (KO)rejected us forever?
Why does Your anger (KP)smoke against the (KQ)sheep of Your [dr]pasture?
Remember Your congregation, which You (KR)purchased of old,
Which You have (KS)redeemed to be the (KT)tribe of Your inheritance;
And this Mount (KU)Zion, where You have dwelt.
[ds]Step toward the [dt](KV)irreparable ruins;
The enemy (KW)has damaged everything in the sanctuary.
Your adversaries have (KX)roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their (KY)own signs as (KZ)signs.
It [du]seems like one bringing up
His (LA)axe into a [dv]forest of trees.
And now they break down [dw]all its (LB)carved work
With axe and hammers.
They have [dx](LC)burned Your sanctuary [dy]to the ground;
They have (LD)defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
They (LE)said in their heart, “Let’s [dz]completely [ea]subdue them.”
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
We do not see our (LF)signs;
There is (LG)no longer any prophet,
Nor is there anyone among us who knows (LH)how long.
10 How long, God, will the enemy (LI)taunt You?
Shall the enemy (LJ)treat Your name disrespectfully forever?
11 Why (LK)do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand?
Extend it from Your chest and (LL)destroy them!

12 Yet God is (LM)my King from long ago,
Who performs acts of salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 [eb]You (LN)divided the sea by Your strength;
[ec]You (LO)broke the heads of the (LP)sea monsters [ed]in the waters.
14 [ee]You crushed the heads of [ef](LQ)Leviathan;
You gave him as food for the [eg]creatures (LR)of the wilderness.
15 [eh]You (LS)broke open springs and torrents;
[ei]You (LT)dried up ever-flowing streams.
16 Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;
[ej]You have (LU)prepared the [ek]light and the sun.
17 [el]You have (LV)established all the boundaries of the earth;
[em]You have [en]created (LW)summer and winter.

18 Remember this, [eo]Lord, that the enemy has (LX)taunted You,
And a (LY)foolish people has treated Your name disrespectfully.
19 Do not give the soul of Your (LZ)turtledove to the wild animal;
(MA)Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.
20 Consider the (MB)covenant;
For the (MC)dark places of the land are full of the places of violence.
21 May the (MD)oppressed person not return dishonored;
May the (ME)afflicted and the needy praise Your name.

22 Arise, God, and (MF)plead Your own cause;
Remember [ep]how the (MG)foolish person taunts You all day long.
23 Do not forget the voice of Your (MH)adversaries,
The (MI)uproar of those who rise against You, which ascends continually.

God Humbles the Proud, but Exalts the Righteous.

For the music director; set to [eq]Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.

75 We (MJ)give thanks to You, God, we give thanks,
For Your name is (MK)near;
People declare (ML)Your wondrous works.
“When I select an (MM)appointed time,
It is I who (MN)judge fairly.
The (MO)earth and all who inhabit it [er]are unsteady;
It is I who have firmly set its (MP)pillars. Selah
I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
And to the wicked, ‘(MQ)Do not lift up the horn;
Do not lift up your horn on high,
(MR)Do not speak with insolent [es]pride.’”

For not from the east, nor from the west,
Nor from the [et](MS)desert comes exaltation;
But (MT)God is the Judge;
He (MU)puts down one and exalts another.
For a (MV)cup is in the hand of the Lord, and the wine foams;
It is [eu](MW)well mixed, and He pours out of this;
Certainly all the wicked of the earth must drain and (MX)drink its dregs.

But as for me, I will (MY)declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 And [ev]He will cut off all the (MZ)horns of the wicked,
But (NA)the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.

The Victorious Power of the God of Jacob.

For the music director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.

76 God is (NB)known in Judah;
His name is (NC)great in Israel.
His [ew](ND)tabernacle is in (NE)Salem;
His (NF)dwelling place also is in Zion.
There He (NG)broke the [ex]flaming arrows,
The shield, the sword, and the [ey]weapons of war. Selah

You are resplendent,
[ez]More majestic than the mountains of prey.
The (NH)stouthearted were plundered,
[fa]They sank into sleep;
And none of the [fb]warriors could use his hands.
At Your (NI)rebuke, God of Jacob,
Both [fc](NJ)rider and horse were cast into a dead sleep.
You, You indeed are (NK)to be feared,
And (NL)who may stand in Your presence, [fd]once You are angry?

You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;
The earth (NM)feared and was still
When God (NN)arose to judgment,
To save all the humble of the earth. Selah
10 For the [fe](NO)wrath of mankind shall praise You;
You will encircle Yourself with a remnant of wrath.

11 (NP)Make vows to the Lord your God and (NQ)fulfill them;
All who are around Him are to (NR)bring gifts to Him who is to be feared.
12 He will cut off the spirit of princes;
He is [ff](NS)feared by the kings of the earth.

Comfort in Trouble from Recalling God’s Mighty Deeds.

For the music director; [fg]according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph.

77 My voice rises to God, and I will (NT)cry aloud;
My voice rises to God, and He will listen to me.
In the (NU)day of my trouble I sought the Lord;
(NV)In the night my (NW)hand was stretched out and did not grow weary;
My soul (NX)refused to be comforted.
When I remember God, then I am (NY)restless;
When I (NZ)sigh, then (OA)my spirit feels weak. Selah
You have held my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I (OB)cannot speak.
I have considered the (OC)days of old,
The years of long ago.
I will remember my (OD)song in the night;
I (OE)will meditate with my heart,
And my spirit [fh]ponders:

Will the Lord (OF)reject forever?
And will He (OG)never be favorable again?
Has His (OH)favor ceased forever?
Has His [fi](OI)promise come to an end [fj]forever?
Has God (OJ)forgotten to be gracious,
Or has He in anger [fk]withdrawn His (OK)compassion? Selah
10 Then I said, “(OL)It is my [fl]grief,
That the (OM)right hand of the Most High has changed.”

11 I shall remember the (ON)deeds of [fm]the Lord;
I will certainly (OO)remember Your wonders of old.
12 I will (OP)meditate on all Your work,
And on Your deeds with thanksgiving.
13 Your way, God, is (OQ)holy;
(OR)What god is great like our God?
14 You are the (OS)God who works wonders;
You have (OT)made known Your strength among the peoples.
15 By Your [fn]power You have (OU)redeemed Your people,
The sons of Jacob and (OV)Joseph. Selah

16 The (OW)waters saw You, God;
The waters saw You, they were in anguish;
The ocean depths also trembled.
17 The (OX)clouds poured out water;
The skies [fo](OY)sounded out;
Your (OZ)arrows [fp]flashed here and there.
18 The (PA)sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
The (PB)lightning lit up the world;
The (PC)earth trembled and shook.
19 Your (PD)way was in the sea
And Your paths in the mighty waters,
And Your footprints were not known.
20 You (PE)led Your people like a flock
By the hand of (PF)Moses and Aaron.

God’s Guidance of His People in Spite of Their Unfaithfulness.

A [fq]Maskil of Asaph.

78 (PG)Listen, my people, to my [fr]instruction;
(PH)Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will (PI)open my mouth in a parable;
I will tell (PJ)riddles of old,
Which we have heard and known,
And (PK)our fathers have told us.
We will (PL)not conceal them from their children,
But we will (PM)tell the generation to come the praises of the Lord,
And His power and His (PN)wondrous works that He has done.

For He established a (PO)testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a (PP)law in Israel,
Which He (PQ)commanded our fathers
That they were to [fs](PR)teach them to their children,
(PS)So that the generation to come would know, (PT)the children yet to be born,
That they would arise and (PU)tell them to their children,
So that they would put their confidence in God
And (PV)not forget the works of God,
But (PW)comply with His commandments,
And (PX)not be like their fathers,
A (PY)stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation that (PZ)did not [ft]prepare its heart
And whose spirit was not (QA)faithful to God.

The sons of Ephraim [fu]were (QB)archers equipped with bows,
Yet (QC)they turned back on the day of battle.
10 They (QD)did not keep the covenant of God
And refused to (QE)walk in His Law;
11 They (QF)forgot His deeds
And His [fv]miracles that He had shown them.
12 (QG)He performed wonders before their fathers
In the land of Egypt, in the (QH)field of Zoan.
13 He (QI)divided the sea and caused them to pass through,
And He made the waters stand (QJ)up like a heap.
14 Then He led them with the cloud by (QK)day
And all the night with a (QL)light of fire.
15 He (QM)split the rocks in the wilderness
And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.
16 He (QN)brought forth streams from the rock
And made waters run down like rivers.

17 Yet they still continued to sin against Him,
To (QO)rebel against the Most High in the desert.
18 And in their heart they (QP)put God to the test
By asking for (QQ)food [fw]that suited their taste.
19 Then they spoke against God;
They said, “(QR)Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, He (QS)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He also provide bread?
Will He prepare (QT)meat for His people?”

21 Therefore the Lord heard and [fx]was (QU)full of wrath;
And a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also mounted against Israel,
22 Because they (QV)did not believe in God
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He commanded the clouds above
And (QW)opened the doors of heaven;
24 He (QX)rained down manna upon them to eat,
And gave them [fy](QY)food from heaven.
25 Man ate the bread of [fz]angels;
He sent them [ga]food [gb](QZ)in abundance.
26 He (RA)made the east wind blow in the sky
And by His [gc]power He directed the south wind.
27 When He rained meat upon them like the dust,
Even (RB)winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
28 He let them fall in the midst of [gd]their camp,
All around their dwellings.
29 So they (RC)ate and were well filled,
And He [ge]satisfied their longing.
30 [gf]Yet before they had abandoned their longing,
(RD)While their food was in their mouths,
31 The (RE)anger of God rose against them
And killed [gg]some of their (RF)strongest ones,
And [gh]subdued the choice men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this they (RG)still sinned
And (RH)did not believe in His wonderful works.
33 So He brought (RI)their days to an end in futility,
And their years to an end in sudden terror.

34 When He killed them, then they (RJ)sought Him,
And they returned and searched (RK)diligently for God;
35 And they remembered that God was their (RL)rock,
And the Most High God their (RM)Redeemer.
36 But they (RN)flattered Him with their mouth
And (RO)lied to Him with their tongue.
37 For their heart was not (RP)steadfast toward Him,
Nor were they faithful with His covenant.
38 But He, being (RQ)compassionate, [gi](RR)forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them;
And often He [gj](RS)restrained His anger
And did not stir up all His wrath.
39 So (RT)He remembered that they were only (RU)flesh,
A [gk](RV)wind that passes and does not return.

40 How often they (RW)rebelled against Him in the wilderness
And (RX)grieved Him in the (RY)desert!
41 Again and again they [gl](RZ)tempted God,
And pained the (SA)Holy One of Israel.
42 They (SB)did not remember (SC)His [gm]power,
The day when He (SD)redeemed them from the enemy,
43 When He performed His (SE)signs in Egypt
And His (SF)marvels in the field of Zoan,
44 And (SG)turned their rivers to blood,
And their streams, so that they could not drink.
45 He sent swarms of (SH)flies among them that devoured them,
And (SI)frogs that destroyed them.
46 He also gave their crops to the (SJ)grasshopper
And the product of their labor to the (SK)locust.
47 He [gn]destroyed their vines with (SL)hailstones
And their sycamore trees with frost.
48 He also turned their (SM)cattle over to the hailstones,
And their herds to bolts of lightning.
49 He (SN)sent His burning anger upon them,
Fury and indignation and trouble,
A band of [go]destroying angels.
50 He leveled a path for His anger;
He did not spare their souls from death,
But (SO)turned their lives over to the plague,
51 And (SP)struck all the firstborn in Egypt,
The (SQ)first and best of their vigor in the tents of (SR)Ham.
52 But He (SS)led His own people out like sheep,
And guided them in the wilderness (ST)like a flock;
53 He led them (SU)safely, so that they did not fear;
But (SV)the sea engulfed their enemies.

54 So (SW)He brought them to His holy [gp]land,
To this [gq](SX)hill country (SY)which His right hand had gained.
55 He also (SZ)drove out the nations from them
And (TA)apportioned them as an inheritance by measurement,
And had the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56 Yet they [gr](TB)tempted and (TC)rebelled against the Most High God
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But turned back and (TD)acted treacherously like their fathers;
They (TE)turned aside like a treacherous bow.
58 For they (TF)provoked Him with their (TG)high places
And (TH)moved Him to jealousy with their (TI)carved images.
59 When God heard them, He [gs]was filled with (TJ)wrath
And He utterly (TK)rejected Israel;
60 So that He (TL)abandoned the (TM)dwelling place at Shiloh,
The tent [gt]which He had pitched among people,
61 And He gave up His (TN)strength to captivity
And His glory (TO)into the hand of the enemy.
62 He also (TP)turned His people over to the sword,
And [gu]was filled with wrath at His inheritance.
63 (TQ)Fire devoured [gv]His young men,
And [gw]His (TR)virgins had no wedding songs.
64 [gx]His (TS)priests fell by the sword,
And [gy]His (TT)widows could not weep.

65 Then the Lord (TU)awoke as if from sleep,
Like a (TV)warrior [gz]overcome by wine.
66 He [ha](TW)drove His adversaries backward;
He put on them an everlasting disgrace.
67 He also (TX)rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount (TY)Zion, which He loved.
69 And He (TZ)built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
70 He also (UA)chose His servant David
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 From [hb](UB)the care of the [hc]ewes (UC)with nursing lambs He brought him
To (UD)shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel (UE)His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the (UF)integrity of his heart,
And guided them with his skillful hands.

My eyes fail,(CU)
    looking for my God.
Those who hate me(CV) without reason(CW)
    outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,(CX)
    those who seek to destroy me.(CY)
I am forced to restore
    what I did not steal.

You, God, know my folly;(CZ)
    my guilt is not hidden from you.(DA)

Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    may those who hope in you
    not be disgraced because of me;
God of Israel,
    may those who seek you
    not be put to shame because of me.
For I endure scorn(DB) for your sake,(DC)
    and shame covers my face.(DD)
I am a foreigner to my own family,
    a stranger to my own mother’s children;(DE)
for zeal for your house consumes me,(DF)
    and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.(DG)
10 When I weep and fast,(DH)
    I must endure scorn;
11 when I put on sackcloth,(DI)
    people make sport of me.
12 Those who sit at the gate(DJ) mock me,
    and I am the song of the drunkards.(DK)

13 But I pray to you, Lord,
    in the time of your favor;(DL)
in your great love,(DM) O God,
    answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
    do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
    from the deep waters.(DN)
15 Do not let the floodwaters(DO) engulf me
    or the depths swallow me up(DP)
    or the pit close its mouth over me.(DQ)

16 Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love;(DR)
    in your great mercy turn to me.
17 Do not hide your face(DS) from your servant;
    answer me quickly,(DT) for I am in trouble.(DU)
18 Come near and rescue me;
    deliver(DV) me because of my foes.

19 You know how I am scorned,(DW) disgraced and shamed;
    all my enemies are before you.
20 Scorn has broken my heart
    and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
    for comforters,(DX) but I found none.(DY)
21 They put gall in my food
    and gave me vinegar(DZ) for my thirst.(EA)

22 May the table set before them become a snare;
    may it become retribution and[o] a trap.(EB)
23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
    and their backs be bent forever.(EC)
24 Pour out your wrath(ED) on them;
    let your fierce anger overtake them.
25 May their place be deserted;(EE)
    let there be no one to dwell in their tents.(EF)
26 For they persecute those you wound
    and talk about the pain of those you hurt.(EG)
27 Charge them with crime upon crime;(EH)
    do not let them share in your salvation.(EI)
28 May they be blotted out of the book of life(EJ)
    and not be listed with the righteous.(EK)

29 But as for me, afflicted and in pain—
    may your salvation, God, protect me.(EL)

30 I will praise God’s name in song(EM)
    and glorify him(EN) with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox,
    more than a bull with its horns and hooves.(EO)
32 The poor will see and be glad(EP)
    you who seek God, may your hearts live!(EQ)
33 The Lord hears the needy(ER)
    and does not despise his captive people.

34 Let heaven and earth praise him,
    the seas and all that move in them,(ES)
35 for God will save Zion(ET)
    and rebuild the cities of Judah.(EU)
Then people will settle there and possess it;
36     the children of his servants will inherit it,(EV)
    and those who love his name will dwell there.(EW)

Psalm 70[p](EX)

For the director of music. Of David. A petition.

Hasten, O God, to save me;
    come quickly, Lord, to help me.(EY)

May those who want to take my life(EZ)
    be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
    be turned back in disgrace.(FA)
May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”(FB)
    turn back because of their shame.
But may all who seek you(FC)
    rejoice and be glad(FD) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”(FE)

But as for me, I am poor and needy;(FF)
    come quickly to me,(FG) O God.
You are my help(FH) and my deliverer;(FI)
    Lord, do not delay.(FJ)

Psalm 71(FK)

In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;(FL)
    let me never be put to shame.(FM)
In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me;
    turn your ear(FN) to me and save me.
Be my rock of refuge,
    to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
    for you are my rock and my fortress.(FO)
Deliver(FP) me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,(FQ)
    from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel.(FR)

For you have been my hope,(FS) Sovereign Lord,
    my confidence(FT) since my youth.
From birth(FU) I have relied on you;
    you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.(FV)
    I will ever praise(FW) you.
I have become a sign(FX) to many;
    you are my strong refuge.(FY)
My mouth(FZ) is filled with your praise,
    declaring your splendor(GA) all day long.

Do not cast(GB) me away when I am old;(GC)
    do not forsake(GD) me when my strength is gone.
10 For my enemies(GE) speak against me;
    those who wait to kill(GF) me conspire(GG) together.
11 They say, “God has forsaken(GH) him;
    pursue him and seize him,
    for no one will rescue(GI) him.”
12 Do not be far(GJ) from me, my God;
    come quickly, God, to help(GK) me.
13 May my accusers(GL) perish in shame;(GM)
    may those who want to harm me
    be covered with scorn and disgrace.(GN)

14 As for me, I will always have hope;(GO)
    I will praise you more and more.

15 My mouth will tell(GP) of your righteous deeds,(GQ)
    of your saving acts all day long—
    though I know not how to relate them all.
16 I will come and proclaim your mighty acts,(GR) Sovereign Lord;
    I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone.
17 Since my youth, God, you have taught(GS) me,
    and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.(GT)
18 Even when I am old and gray,(GU)
    do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power(GV) to the next generation,
    your mighty acts to all who are to come.(GW)

19 Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens,(GX)
    you who have done great things.(GY)
    Who is like you, God?(GZ)
20 Though you have made me see troubles,(HA)
    many and bitter,
    you will restore(HB) my life again;
from the depths of the earth(HC)
    you will again bring me up.
21 You will increase my honor(HD)
    and comfort(HE) me once more.

22 I will praise you with the harp(HF)
    for your faithfulness, my God;
I will sing praise to you with the lyre,(HG)
    Holy One of Israel.(HH)
23 My lips will shout for joy(HI)
    when I sing praise to you—
    I whom you have delivered.(HJ)
24 My tongue will tell of your righteous acts
    all day long,(HK)
for those who wanted to harm me(HL)
    have been put to shame and confusion.(HM)

Psalm 72

Of Solomon.

Endow the king with your justice,(HN) O God,
    the royal son with your righteousness.
May he judge your people in righteousness,(HO)
    your afflicted ones with justice.

May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
    the hills the fruit of righteousness.
May he defend the afflicted(HP) among the people
    and save the children of the needy;(HQ)
    may he crush the oppressor.(HR)
May he endure[q](HS) as long as the sun,
    as long as the moon, through all generations.(HT)
May he be like rain(HU) falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth.
In his days may the righteous flourish(HV)
    and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

May he rule from sea to sea
    and from the River[r](HW) to the ends of the earth.(HX)
May the desert tribes bow before him
    and his enemies lick the dust.
10 May the kings of Tarshish(HY) and of distant shores(HZ)
    bring tribute to him.
May the kings of Sheba(IA) and Seba
    present him gifts.(IB)
11 May all kings bow down(IC) to him
    and all nations serve(ID) him.

12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
    the afflicted who have no one to help.
13 He will take pity(IE) on the weak and the needy
    and save the needy from death.
14 He will rescue(IF) them from oppression and violence,
    for precious(IG) is their blood in his sight.

15 Long may he live!
    May gold from Sheba(IH) be given him.
May people ever pray for him
    and bless him all day long.(II)
16 May grain(IJ) abound throughout the land;
    on the tops of the hills may it sway.
May the crops(IK) flourish like Lebanon(IL)
    and thrive[s] like the grass of the field.(IM)
17 May his name endure forever;(IN)
    may it continue as long as the sun.(IO)

Then all nations will be blessed through him,[t]
    and they will call him blessed.(IP)

18 Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,(IQ)
    who alone does marvelous deeds.(IR)
19 Praise be to his glorious name(IS) forever;
    may the whole earth be filled with his glory.(IT)
Amen and Amen.(IU)

20 This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.(IV)

BOOK III

Psalms 73–89

Psalm 73

A psalm of Asaph.

Surely God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.(IW)

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;(IX)
    I had nearly lost my foothold.(IY)
For I envied(IZ) the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(JA)

They have no struggles;
    their bodies are healthy and strong.[u]
They are free(JB) from common human burdens;
    they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore pride(JC) is their necklace;(JD)
    they clothe themselves with violence.(JE)
From their callous hearts(JF) comes iniquity[v];
    their evil imaginations have no limits.
They scoff, and speak with malice;(JG)
    with arrogance(JH) they threaten oppression.(JI)
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
    and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore their people turn to them
    and drink up waters in abundance.[w]
11 They say, “How would God know?
    Does the Most High know anything?”

12 This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,(JJ) they go on amassing wealth.(JK)

13 Surely in vain(JL) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.(JM)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(JN)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

15 If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand(JO) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary(JP) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.(JQ)

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;(JR)
    you cast them down to ruin.(JS)
19 How suddenly(JT) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away(JU) by terrors!
20 They are like a dream(JV) when one awakes;(JW)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.(JX)

21 When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
22 I was senseless(JY) and ignorant;
    I was a brute beast(JZ) before you.

23 Yet I am always with you;
    you hold me by my right hand.(KA)
24 You guide(KB) me with your counsel,(KC)
    and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?(KD)
    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.(KE)
26 My flesh and my heart(KF) may fail,(KG)
    but God is the strength(KH) of my heart
    and my portion(KI) forever.

27 Those who are far from you will perish;(KJ)
    you destroy all who are unfaithful(KK) to you.
28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.(KL)
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;(KM)
    I will tell of all your deeds.(KN)

Psalm 74

A maskil[x] of Asaph.

O God, why have you rejected(KO) us forever?(KP)
    Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(KQ)
Remember the nation you purchased(KR) long ago,(KS)
    the people of your inheritance,(KT) whom you redeemed(KU)
    Mount Zion,(KV) where you dwelt.(KW)
Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(KX)
    all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

Your foes roared(KY) in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards(KZ) as signs.
They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.(LA)
They smashed all the carved(LB) paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled(LC) the dwelling place(LD) of your Name.(LE)
They said in their hearts, “We will crush(LF) them completely!”
    They burned(LG) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

We are given no signs from God;(LH)
    no prophets(LI) are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(LJ) will the enemy mock(LK) you, God?
    Will the foe revile(LL) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(LM)
    Take it from the folds of your garment(LN) and destroy them!

12 But God is my King(LO) from long ago;
    he brings salvation(LP) on the earth.

13 It was you who split open the sea(LQ) by your power;
    you broke the heads of the monster(LR) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(LS)
    and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(LT)
15 It was you who opened up springs(LU) and streams;
    you dried up(LV) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.(LW)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries(LX) of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter.(LY)

18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
    how foolish people(LZ) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(MA) to wild beasts;
    do not forget the lives of your afflicted(MB) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(MC)
    because haunts of violence fill the dark places(MD) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(ME) retreat in disgrace;
    may the poor and needy(MF) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(MG) O God, and defend your cause;
    remember how fools(MH) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(MI) of your adversaries,(MJ)
    the uproar(MK) of your enemies,(ML) which rises continually.

Psalm 75[y]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph. A song.

We praise you, God,
    we praise you, for your Name is near;(MM)
    people tell of your wonderful deeds.(MN)

You say, “I choose the appointed time;(MO)
    it is I who judge with equity.(MP)
When the earth and all its people quake,(MQ)
    it is I who hold its pillars(MR) firm.[z]
To the arrogant(MS) I say, ‘Boast no more,’(MT)
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.[aa](MU)
Do not lift your horns against heaven;
    do not speak so defiantly.(MV)’”

No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt themselves.
It is God who judges:(MW)
    He brings one down, he exalts another.(MX)
In the hand of the Lord is a cup
    full of foaming wine mixed(MY) with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
    drink it down to its very dregs.(MZ)

As for me, I will declare(NA) this forever;
    I will sing(NB) praise to the God of Jacob,(NC)
10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
    but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(ND)

Psalm 76[ab]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.

God is renowned in Judah;
    in Israel his name is great.(NE)
His tent is in Salem,(NF)
    his dwelling place in Zion.(NG)
There he broke the flashing arrows,(NH)
    the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.[ac](NI)

You are radiant with light,(NJ)
    more majestic than mountains rich with game.
The valiant(NK) lie plundered,
    they sleep their last sleep;(NL)
not one of the warriors
    can lift his hands.
At your rebuke,(NM) God of Jacob,
    both horse and chariot(NN) lie still.

It is you alone who are to be feared.(NO)
    Who can stand(NP) before you when you are angry?(NQ)
From heaven you pronounced judgment,
    and the land feared(NR) and was quiet—
when you, God, rose up to judge,(NS)
    to save all the afflicted(NT) of the land.
10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,(NU)
    and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.[ad]

11 Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;(NV)
    let all the neighboring lands
    bring gifts(NW) to the One to be feared.
12 He breaks the spirit of rulers;
    he is feared by the kings of the earth.

Psalm 77[ae]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm.

I cried out to God(NX) for help;
    I cried out to God to hear me.
When I was in distress,(NY) I sought the Lord;
    at night(NZ) I stretched out untiring hands,(OA)
    and I would not be comforted.(OB)

I remembered(OC) you, God, and I groaned;(OD)
    I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.[af](OE)
You kept my eyes from closing;
    I was too troubled to speak.(OF)
I thought about the former days,(OG)
    the years of long ago;
I remembered my songs in the night.
    My heart meditated and my spirit asked:

“Will the Lord reject forever?(OH)
    Will he never show his favor(OI) again?
Has his unfailing love(OJ) vanished forever?
    Has his promise(OK) failed for all time?
Has God forgotten to be merciful?(OL)
    Has he in anger withheld his compassion?(OM)

10 Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
    the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.(ON)
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will remember your miracles(OO) of long ago.
12 I will consider(OP) all your works
    and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”(OQ)

13 Your ways, God, are holy.
    What god is as great as our God?(OR)
14 You are the God who performs miracles;(OS)
    you display your power among the peoples.
15 With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,(OT)
    the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.

16 The waters(OU) saw you, God,
    the waters saw you and writhed;(OV)
    the very depths were convulsed.
17 The clouds poured down water,(OW)
    the heavens resounded with thunder;(OX)
    your arrows(OY) flashed back and forth.
18 Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind,(OZ)
    your lightning(PA) lit up the world;
    the earth trembled and quaked.(PB)
19 Your path(PC) led through the sea,(PD)
    your way through the mighty waters,
    though your footprints were not seen.

20 You led your people(PE) like a flock(PF)
    by the hand of Moses and Aaron.(PG)

Psalm 78

A maskil[ag] of Asaph.

My people, hear my teaching;(PH)
    listen to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth with a parable;(PI)
    I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
things we have heard and known,
    things our ancestors have told us.(PJ)
We will not hide them from their descendants;(PK)
    we will tell the next generation(PL)
the praiseworthy deeds(PM) of the Lord,
    his power, and the wonders(PN) he has done.
He decreed statutes(PO) for Jacob(PP)
    and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
    to teach their children,
so the next generation would know them,
    even the children yet to be born,(PQ)
    and they in turn would tell their children.
Then they would put their trust in God
    and would not forget(PR) his deeds
    but would keep his commands.(PS)
They would not be like their ancestors(PT)
    a stubborn(PU) and rebellious(PV) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
    whose spirits were not faithful to him.

The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,(PW)
    turned back on the day of battle;(PX)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant(PY)
    and refused to live by his law.(PZ)
11 They forgot what he had done,(QA)
    the wonders he had shown them.
12 He did miracles(QB) in the sight of their ancestors
    in the land of Egypt,(QC) in the region of Zoan.(QD)
13 He divided the sea(QE) and led them through;
    he made the water stand up like a wall.(QF)
14 He guided them with the cloud by day
    and with light from the fire all night.(QG)
15 He split the rocks(QH) in the wilderness
    and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
    and made water flow down like rivers.

17 But they continued to sin(QI) against him,
    rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(QJ)
    by demanding the food they craved.(QK)
19 They spoke against God;(QL)
    they said, “Can God really
    spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
    and water gushed out,(QM)
    streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
    Can he supply meat(QN) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
    his fire broke out(QO) against Jacob,
    and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
    or trust(QP) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
    and opened the doors of the heavens;(QQ)
24 he rained down manna(QR) for the people to eat,
    he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
    he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(QS) from the heavens
    and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
    birds(QT) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
    all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(QU)
    he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
    even while the food was still in their mouths,(QV)
