Jesus Loves Jerusalem

(Luke 13.34,35)

37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me. 38 (A) And now your temple will be deserted. 39 (B) You won't see me again until you say,

“Blessed is the one who comes
in the name of the Lord.”

The Temple Will Be Destroyed

(Mark 13.1,2; Luke 21.5,6)

24 After Jesus left the temple, his disciples came over and said, “Look at all these buildings!”

Jesus replied, “Do you see these buildings? They will certainly be torn down! Not one stone will be left in place.”

Warning about Trouble

(Mark 13.3-13; Luke 21.7-19)

(C) Later, as Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, his disciples came to him in private and asked, “When will this happen? What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the world?”

Jesus answered:

Don't let anyone fool you. Many will come and claim to be me. They will say they are the Messiah, and they will fool many people.

You will soon hear about wars and threats of wars, but don't be afraid. These things will have to happen first, but that isn't the end. (D) Nations and kingdoms will go to war against each other. People will starve to death, and in some places there will be earthquakes. But this is just the beginning of troubles.

(E) You will be arrested, punished, and even killed. Because of me, you will be hated by people of all nations. 10 Many will give up and will betray and hate each other. 11 Many false prophets will come and fool a lot of people. 12 Evil will spread and cause many people to stop loving others. 13 (F) But if you keep on being faithful right to the end, you will be saved. 14 When the good news about the kingdom has been preached all over the world and told to all nations, the end will come.

The Horrible Thing

(Mark 13.14-23; Luke 21.20-24)

15 (G) Someday you will see that “Horrible Thing” in the holy place, just as the prophet Daniel said. Everyone who reads this must try to understand! 16 If you are living in Judea at that time, run to the mountains. 17 (H) If you are on the roof[a] of your house, don't go inside to get anything. 18 If you are out in the field, don't go back for your coat. 19 It will be a terrible time for women who are expecting babies or nursing young children. 20 And pray that you won't have to escape in winter or on a Sabbath.[b] 21 (I) This will be the worst time of suffering since the beginning of the world, and nothing this terrible will ever happen again. 22 If God doesn't make the time shorter, no one will be left alive. But because of God's chosen ones, he will make the time shorter.

23 Someone may say, “Here is the Messiah!” or “There he is!” But don't believe it. 24 False messiahs and false prophets will come and work great miracles and signs. They will even try to fool God's chosen ones. 25 But I have warned you ahead of time. 26 (J) If you are told the Messiah is out in the desert, don't go there! And if you are told he is in some secret place, don't believe it! 27 The coming of the Son of Man will be like lightning that can be seen from east to west. 28 (K) Where there is a corpse, there will always be vultures.[c]

When the Son of Man Appears

(Mark 13.24-27; Luke 21.25-28)

29 (L) Right after those days of suffering,

“The sun will become dark,
and the moon
    will no longer shine.
The stars will fall,
and the powers in the sky[d]
    will be shaken.”

30 (M) Then a sign will appear in the sky. And there will be the Son of Man.[e] All nations on earth will weep when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 At the sound of a loud trumpet, he will send his angels to bring his chosen ones together from all over the earth.

Footnotes

  1. 24.17 roof: In Palestine the houses usually had a flat roof. Stairs on the outside led up to the roof, which was made of beams and boards covered with packed earth.
  2. 24.20 in winter or on a Sabbath: In Palestine the winters are cold and rainy and make travel difficult. The Jewish people were not allowed to travel much more than a kilometer on the Sabbath. For these reasons it was hard for them to escape from their enemies in the winter or on a Sabbath.
  3. 24.28 Where there is a corpse, there will always be vultures: This saying may mean that when anything important happens, people soon know about it. Or the saying may mean that whenever something bad happens, curious people gather around and stare. But the word translated “vulture” also means “eagle” and may refer to the Roman army, which had an eagle as its symbol.
  4. 24.29 the powers in the sky: In ancient times people thought that the stars were spiritual powers.
  5. 24.30 And there will be the Son of Man: Or “And it will be the Son of Man.”

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,(A) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(B) and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(C) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[a](D)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(E)

24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;(F) every one will be thrown down.”

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(G) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(H) and of the end of the age?”(I)

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(J) For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.(K) You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(L) There will be famines(M) and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(N) and put to death,(O) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(P) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(Q) will appear and deceive many people.(R) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(S) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(T) will be preached in the whole world(U) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15 “So when you see standing in the holy place(V) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’[b](W) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop(X) go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(Y) 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.(Z)

22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect(AA) those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.(AB) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders(AC) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.

26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning(AD) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming(AE) of the Son of Man.(AF) 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.(AG)

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[c](AH)

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[d] will mourn(AI) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,(AJ) with power and great glory.[e] 31 And he will send his angels(AK) with a loud trumpet call,(AL) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
