^33 (A)They came to Capernaum; and when He was in ^(B)the house, He began to question them: “What were you discussing on the way?” ³⁴ But they kept silent, for on the way ^(C)they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. ³⁵ And sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, “^(D)If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” ³⁶ And He took a child and placed him among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, ³⁷ “^(E)Whoever ^[a]receives ^[b]one child like this in My name ^[c]receives Me; and whoever ^[d]receives Me does not ^[e]receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”

Rank in the Kingdom

18 ^(A)At that ^[a]time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “^(B)Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” ² And He called a child to Himself and set him among them, ³ and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you ^[b]change and ^(C)become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ So whoever will humble himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. ⁵ And whoever receives one such child in My name, receives Me; ⁶ but ^(D)whoever ^(E)causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to ^[c]sin, it is better for him that a ^[d]heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depths of the sea.

The Test of Greatness

^46 (A)Now an argument ^[a]started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. ⁴⁷ But Jesus, ^(B)knowing ^[b]what they were thinking in their hearts, took a child and had him stand by His side, ⁴⁸ and He said to them, “^(C)Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; ^(D)for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”
