37 And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not [a]keep watch for one hour? 38 [b](A)Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again He went away and prayed, saying the same [c]words. 40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say in reply to Him. 41 And He *came the third time, and *said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough. (B)The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being [d]betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

Betrayal and Arrest

43 (C)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up, [e]accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who were from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away [f]under guard.” 45 And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and *said, “(D)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 And they laid hands on Him and arrested Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [g]cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 49 Every day I was with you (E)within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me; but this has taken place so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled.” 50 And [h]His disciples all left Him and fled.

51 A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they *seized him. 52 But he [i]pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Jesus before His Accusers

53 (F)They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes *gathered together. 54 And Peter had followed Him at a distance, (G)right into (H)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the [j]officers and (I)warming himself at the [k]fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the entire [l](J)Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56 For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent. 57 And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘(K)I will destroy this [m]temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.’” 59 And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60 And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 61 (L)But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. (M)Again the high priest was questioning Him, and *said to Him, “Are You the [n]Christ, the Son of [o]the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see (N)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and (O)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 (P)Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (Q)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death. 65 And some began to (R)spit on Him, and [p](S)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, “(T)Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him [q]and slapped Him in the face.

Peter’s Denials

66 (U)And while Peter was below in (V)the courtyard, one of the slave women of the high priest *came, 67 and seeing Peter (W)warming himself, she looked at him and *said, “You were with Jesus the (X)Nazarene as well.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he (Y)went out onto the [r]porch.[s] 69 The slave woman saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them!” 70 But again (Z)he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “You really are one of them, (AA)for you are a Galilean as well.” 71 But he began to [t]curse himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!” 72 And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before (AB)a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And [u]he hurried on and began to weep.

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(A) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(B)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(C) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(D)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(E) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(F) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(G) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(H) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(I)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(J)(K)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(L) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(M)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(N) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(O) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(P)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(Q)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(R)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(S) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(T) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(U)

Peter Disowns Jesus(V)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(W) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(X) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(Y) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(Z) he said, and went out into the entryway.[a]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(AA)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(AB)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(AC)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[b] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[c] you will disown me three times.”(AD) And he broke down and wept.
