34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him(A) and kill him.(B) Three days later(C) he will rise.”(D)

The Request of James and John(E)

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”(F)

38 “You don’t know what you are asking,”(G) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup(H) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”(I)

39 “We can,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,(J) 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
