⁵⁰ But they did not understand what he was saying to them.^(A)

³⁴ The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.^(A)

⁵² for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.^(A)

⁶ Jesus used this figure of speech,^(A) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.^(B)

¹⁶ At first his disciples did not understand all this.^(A) Only after Jesus was glorified^(B) did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.

¹⁷ At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’^(A) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”^{(B) 18} They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

¹⁹ Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’?

¹³ Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.^(A)

¹⁰ They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.
