The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

He also told this parable to some (A)who trusted (B)in themselves that they were righteous, (C)and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men (D)went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, (E)standing by himself, prayed[a] (F)thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 (G)I fast twice a week; (H)I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, (I)standing far off, (J)would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but (K)beat his breast, saying, ‘God, (L)be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For (M)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Let the Children Come to Me

15 (N)Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they (O)rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, (P)“Let the children come to me, and (Q)do not hinder them, (R)for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 (S)Truly, I say to you, whoever does not (T)receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

The Rich Ruler

18 (U)And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to (V)inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: (W)‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, (X)“All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. (Y)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have (Z)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 (AA)But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, (AB)“How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter (AC)the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter (AD)the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But he said, (AE)“What is impossible with man is possible with God.” 28 And Peter said, “See, (AF)we have left our homes and followed you.” 29 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, (AG)there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers[b] or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive (AH)many times more (AI)in this time, and in (AJ)the age to come eternal life.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

31 (AK)And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, (AL)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (AM)everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be (AN)delivered over to the Gentiles and will be (AO)mocked and shamefully treated and (AP)spit upon. 33 And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on (AQ)the third day he will rise.” 34 (AR)But they understood none of these things. (AS)This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar

35 (AT)As he drew near to Jericho, (AU)a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. 37 They told him, (AV)“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he cried out, “Jesus, (AW)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 And those who were in front (AX)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41 (AY)“What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; (AZ)your faith has (BA)made you well.” 43 And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, (BB)glorifying God. And (BC)all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Jesus and Zacchaeus

19 (BD)He entered Jericho and was passing through. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And (BE)he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into (BF)a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for (BG)I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and (BH)received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all (BI)grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods (BJ)I give to the poor. And if I have (BK)defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it (BL)fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since (BM)he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For (BN)the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The Parable of the Ten Minas

11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because (BO)they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. 12 He said therefore, (BP)“A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. 13 Calling (BQ)ten of his servants,[c] he gave them ten minas,[d] and said to them, ‘Engage in business (BR)until I come.’ 14 But (BS)his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. 16 The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant![e] Because you have been (BT)faithful in a very little, (BU)you shall have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in (BV)a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are (BW)a severe man. You take (BX)what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, (BY)‘I will condemn you with your own words, (BZ)you wicked servant! You knew that I was (CA)a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24 And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26 ‘I tell you that (CB)to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But (CC)as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (CD)slaughter them before me.’”

The Triumphal Entry

28 And when he had said these things, (CE)he went on ahead, (CF)going up to Jerusalem.
