³¹ And they begged him not to banish them to the abyss.^(A)

⁷ or, “Who will go down into the abyss?”^[a](A) that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.^(B)

¹¹ They had as their king^[a] the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon,^[b](A) and in Greek he has the name Apollyon.^[c]

⁷ When they finish their testimony, the beast^(A) that comes up out of the abyss^(B) will make war on them, conquer them, and kill them.

⁸ The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up from the abyss^(A) and go to destruction.^(B) Those who live on the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world^(C) will be astonished when they see the beast that was, and is not, and is to come.^(D)

Satan Bound

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven holding the key to the abyss^(A) and a great chain^(B) in his hand. ² He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan,^[a](C) and bound^(D) him for a thousand years. ³ He threw him into the abyss, closed it, and put a seal on it^(E) so that he would no longer deceive the nations^(F) until the thousand years were completed. After that, he must be released for a short time.
